Default [Help - Vista] Crashes while using Internet

Well the title pretty much says it all. My laptop (the fantastic one that was broken a while back) crashes randomly about 5-15 minutes after starting up -any- internet browser. If I don't get online it doesn't crash at all though. Any suggestions on what I should do? Besides buying a new comp.

If it helps, my laptop is an HP Pavillion DV2500 running Vista Home Premium (32-bit).

Possibly try to uninstall your network driver and download it from another computer (obviously). Re-install. That may work.

Before doing that see if something like MSN crashes it. If it doesn't it could be something else.

It could be java or flash also. A bad install could send a computer into wacky town.

Seeing as how it doesn't crash until one is started, it makes it pretty clear. Best thing to do would be installing firefox, while installing it'll ask to import, do not import settings. Try that and if it works fine with no crashes, try to narrow it down to what exactly is causing your other browsers to crash the computer by uninstalling various add-ons you use with your browsers.

And just for extra help bring up task manager and watch what else comes up when you start internet explorer. Could be a prank timer that shuts down your pc. o_O; I used to do that to people I hated.

Okay, MSN worked fine, so that's out the window.

Apparently only some websites make it crash as well. AF, Facebook, and some other sites kill it in about 30 seconds. Google didn't crash at all until I tried searching stuff. I'll try Kie's advice real fast and see where it gets me.

EDIT: Okay, it worked long enough for me to uninstall Firefox, Java, and Flash Player, then re-install all of them. It crashed again after about a minute. I'm totally lost. Someone said I might need to re-install Vista again, but I don't have the disc soooo...yeah.

You should have a recovery partition on your HDD. All you have to do is hit F8 when booting up the computer. Select "Repair my computer" then there should be an HP option to revert to factory settings. Be sure to back up your data first if you plan to go this route.

@Caret Gonna throw out the obvious and assume you've checked the obvious like low disc space and did a full virus scan of your PC, along with clearing out your cookie folder manually. Could be an odd driver problem and might clear up with a driver update or reinstall.

Tried that a few months earlier when it was having other problems, it sorta fixed that, but it stopped working a little after. This is the first time it's worked since them, so I don't think it'll make much difference, but I'll try it anyway.

    @GameGeeks
Yup. Did a full boot-scan, and a full scan with Avast, then ran a full scan with Malwarebytes. It only found one thing. I've still got about 60 gigs left on my drive too.

I suggest deleting the cookies then looking at updating your drivers. If that doesn't work chances are you may need to revert back to factory default settings, as suggested by Zero. Which will wipe everything.

How does the crash look? Is it just a "[program] has stopped working" window. Does it freeze up? Does it hard crash BSOD-style?

This is far from guaranteed. Recovery partitions only exist on some set-ups, sometimes not even consistent within the same product line.

@Eris While that's true, it's a last ditch effort before having to do a reformat.

Forgive me, I forgot to mention if you don't have this option looks like you will be hunting down some Window's discs. While it may not work , say if your HDD was actually bad (which doesn't sound like the case) or data being corrupted in the recovery partition, it should work.

It either goes completely black and sits there for eternity, or it goes black for about a minute and restarts completely accompanied with some low clicking sounds.

How about running other programs? Does it freeze up and restart?

Ok, run these steps for me:
    1. Go to Start>press shift + Run
    2. Type "cmd"
    3. Then type these string "chkdsk c: /f/v/r"
    4. It will prompt you to force mount your drive. Select N. Then it will ask you whether you want to run it when your restart. Select Y.
    5. Restart your laptop and let it run check disk on your laptop

Do it on other partition(s) on your laptop.

To me it most certainly sounds like a formation is needed. I don't care how you get the CD, but it should be possible to require one by any means? If necessary, borrow a CD from a friend?

But seriously... You should consider switching to either Linux or Windows 7 :3 Vista seems obsolete to me.

One problem, of course. might be your hardware. I see it in two word: "HP Pavillion"

pavillions are horrible. they're like low-budget alienware. they might be awesome, but if things go wrong, they go wrong HARD.

[I'm no Pro. in anything. but this is true.]

Hardware issues shouldn't cause this specific problems. They'll take the appearance of random crashes, or crashes during heavy system load, not when starting one particular piece of software.

Before going down the reformatting why not try something such as combofix. http://www.combofix.org/

Its worked for me in the past and has been a god send. However if that fails like everything else I would suggest the reformatting route.

And back, did the chckdsk, and still nothing. Now however, it crashes whether or not I use internet. For a week or so, I couldn't get it to turn on at all (holding the power button for like 30 seconds fixed that). Before that though, it worked for like 3-4 hours without crashing. Just finished a system restore a few minutes ago, hoping it doesn't crash yet. I think I'll end up just buying a new PC, this one is pretty much dead now.

Edit: Didn't work, so yeah. I give up.

Might have to get your hands on some new OS discs and reformat it then. If that doesn't work it may be time to get a new laptop.
