The rep system is already shot to hell. It really isn't possible to break it more than it is already broken.

I'm fine with it the way it is, even though inflation has pretty much killed off any real purpose repping might have at one time fulfilled.

It's true that it's shot to Hell. It'd probably only be repaired if we started from Square One again.

I rofl'd at this. It's true. You can't expect to join the community, post a few times, and have a huge rep power. Hell, it took me 4 years and over 1000 posts to get what I have now... Although it'd be twice as much if I hadn't tried to steal points from Kaitou Ace one time... That was a great day. xD

Indeed, but also take into account the fact that most of those are random, and although it's just a guess, I would bet most of those are repeat reps of fairly high power. Please refer to the attatched picture. (Some of us care about the loading speed of others.) You're sure to notice a huge difference in the reps I've received, although some negative, and the reps Snowolf has received. A perfect contrast of proper repping to improper repping.

EDIT: Also, for those long-time members reading this post, doesn't this seem vaguely similar to THIS POST? Please do take the time to read this. Many thanks to Kishiro for bringing this up, although I am willing to bet that this thread will be just as successful as the aforementioned thread.

EDIT AGAIN: After re-reading the aforementioned thread, I have just recalled something:

The rep system was re-worked. See, before that thread (if I recall correctly) the rep power you had was based on the rep points you had, just like now, but the ratio was much higher. For instance, a certain member had around 50,000 rep points and had a rep power of 5000. Obviously the power-to-points ratio has been reduced.

Are we looking to get it reduced again, or are people just wanting to remove the system completely? Either way, it seems childish. In fact, I beleive AF would lose some of its popularity if we trashed the rep system. I see it as a way to show respect to people who deserve it, and beat down people who abuse the forum. On that note, it is rather unfortunate that the rep system is so often dragged into personal vendettas. I am guilty of it myself, though not for quite some time.

The point of this over-edited rather lengthy post?

Stop whining. It's not going to get you anywhere. If someone neg-reps you and doesn't leave a comment, get over it. It's just rep. If you see a problem, report it. If someone neg-reps you and leaves offensive statements, report it. Let the mods and admins do their jobs. That's why they're here. At the same time, keep in mind that there should be no need to moderate the rep system.

People in general are very confused on bandwidth. They are oblivious to concepts such as browser cache (where images are only downloaded once, not every time it appears on the page, or every time you revisit a page) -- which is why we have a rule against quoting images, even though it has no basis in reality what so ever.

They also think that big images are always consume more bandwidth than small ones. This is also not true. Your image is a great example of this. It's 20% smaller than the limit for avatar size.

There was really no call for that...

Something I suggested a long time ago was that a reset occur and the Admins and Mods begin with around 1000 rep power, and any member who has more than 1000 posts be given 10 rep power, and no member with less than 1000 posts can give or receive any reputation other than from the mods and admins.

Basically an incentive to earn your power. That might encourage a bit more responsibility. I'm not sure if the rep system can be coded that way, though.
