Advice on Edward Elric's Coat

I'm an avid cosplayer, so I typically believe in trying to do your own costume as opposed to just buying one. But I'm looking for some advice for an official, preferably cloth(or something durable), accurate, and overall good Edward Elric coat. I'm asking for it for Christmas I believe(hey...it'd be a good investment, I'd wear it everywhere more than I already wear my trench coat) and I want the best that's out there. Suggestions and links appreciated. Thanks.

Well first see what your local fabric stores provide. You'd want something slightly more durable. and possibly the inside layer be different from the outside [the inside lining should be silk but use a light silk as it tends to get a little hot] . Most Edward coats I've seen are made out of fleece [in Florida for some odd reason] since it's heavier and more durable than your average cloth. However go to your craft store and see if they have any durable red cotton fabric. Even ask the sales person what type of red fabric would be good for everyday use though it will be on the $$$ side.
