Default Opposite gender avatars; why do people use them?

A somewhat similar question was asked to me yesterday when they had noticed that I've really only used female-character avatars.

Personally, I've never thought about the idea until they said that. Which made me wonder,

whether it be a game, online, or what have you, what is the reason that a lot of people will predominately choose the opposite gender when given the opportunity? What does this say about how we view Masculinity/Femininity in our progressive-moving society?

Quite an interesting topic, what are your thoughts?

side note; I was kind of on the fence as to where to put this. If it looks like it's getting too "video game-ish", feel free to move it.

Possibly cause its one of their favorite characters, maybe cause they like how the character was made, character fits their personality or maybe they just have a fetish. Multiple possibilities really.

Just because we are male or female in the real world doesn't mean we have to use the same gender in everything else, whether it be in games or just avatars. Plus finding an male avatar that i want is rather difficult same goes for making a male character. Also women just look alot better and personally i would like to look at a female picture or character.

Well, this is the 1st time I'm using a guy avatar because I'm so into Hunter x Hunter right now =3 but I usually always pick female avatars or female characters in a video game. I don't like it when people think I'm a guy using a female character on monster hunter(or any other video game for that matter.) -_-

But I always thought guys who use female characters in games, because the clothes or armor look better for the female or something. And I think they use female avatars because that is their favorite female character in a anime, like how Killua is one of my favorite male characters in Hunter x Hunter ^_^

As far as feminine avatars being chosen by a man, I believe it's because that the feminine form is often seen as more attractive than the masculine; thus, because people wish to have something that is worthy of representing them and seen as attractive, many will decide to go with a feminine-based avatar. Bearing this in mind, it's likely the same logic behind why a woman will choose a masculine-based avatar because said female might likely perceive the masculine form as more attractive than the feminine.

When all is said and done, I suppose the reasoning behind why each person chooses their avatars depends a great deal on how they perceive beauty. However, I think it a good thing that we can so openly express our admiration for the masculine and feminine forms in this way.

I think it's an age thing. I used to play opposite sex when I was younger for purely aesthetic reasons, but now I feel it breaks the RP. Also, it's disturbing when same-sex NPCs are hitting on me. Though, it may also be related to the evolution of the games themselves, as NPCs have gotten increasingly convincing over the years.

I wouldn't say they "predominantly" choose the opposite gender. A lot of people have multiple characters and use both genders.

Personally I use whatever avatar amuses me, and in games I choose whatever looks the part best. For instance, in WoW, if I were to say "I want to roll up a Draenei," if I were planning to make a Paladin I'd probably go for the male character because their arm is like the size of the female's torso. Similarly, I'd think it'd look ridiculous to have this big burly dude walking around as a priest who does six damage on a regular attack.

Default Re: Opposite gender avatars; why do people use them?

I think there are two main reasons why some people use opposite gender avatars: to use their favorite character and to have a representation of themselves or their alter ego.

When I first joined this site 4 years ago, I had a Sesshomaru (from InuYasha) avatar. It didn't really mean anything; I was just looking through the avatars, saw Sesshomaru and then clicked on it because I liked the character (and because I hadn't figured out how to use custom avatars yet). So some people will use opposite gender avatars simply because they like the character or the franchise that it represents.

Others, however, might use opposite gender avatars because they want that avatar to show their true selves or their alter ego. Avatars are merely representations of a user's presence or actions (as far as a forum is concerned). When I customize it, an avatar helps to distinguish me and my posts from everyone else. Its part of my identity on the forum. I use San (from Princess Mononoke) because I think it is a good representation of who I am.

Avatars allow a person to project an identity, whether it be a true identity or a made up one. A person can choose anything, from something that truly represents them or is the complete opposite. If you are shy guy or a demure girl, you can use Shinji Ikari or Olivier Armstrong. If you are a confident dude or a strong lady, you can use Kamina or Princess Euphemia. You can be what you what to be, even a wedge of cheese, a slice of pizza or a muffin.
    This is my war face.

This is what happens to trolls who mess with me.

Pretty much that. Though I have read that people use the argument that they rather look at a female's behind then a male one. For me, character design still plays a part in it since females tend to get more effort put into them. Though, unless I find the male to be absolutely hideous, I go male. Or the game gives me no choice and classes are gender locked and the class I want to play is female.

I can tell you this much...

When playing an MMORPG it is much more pleasing to watch an elf girl's backside all day than it is to watch a male character's arse. Some people may have other reasons, but that's mine. You only see the backside of your character most of the time, so why not make them have an aesthetically pleasing backside?

Same really as to why do people use the same gender as themselves?

It's their own choice personally I'll predominatley use male characters for my main character I'll only change the gender for if
    1) Get bored of using the same gender time and time again
    2) If the male character looks like a complete and utter gimp
    3) If the main character is female and you have no choice in the whole matter.

You only see the backside of your character most of the time, so why not make them have an aesthetically pleasing backside?
I think the same, but when the females doesn't look good at all, like in WoW, I rather look like a hero, but as in games where the appearance are very customizable, I rather choose a girl, as then it's "better for your eyes"(lolwut), as you don't have to watch the back and shoulders of a guy with gaint armor and Goku hair.

In MMORPG's i often roll a female char. I don't think of them as extensions of myself nor am I doing it to gather pity points from other players. I simply like watching things that are moe and given that my character is something I'll be watching a lot, it should be moe, without a doubt.

I always use female anime characters online.... Honestly they are more pretty and diverse to look at...

I don't really have a personal prefferance about male or female characters / avatars, but I guess most guys just like cute girls above badass looking men.

I use girl pictures cause they look cute.

I use guy pictures cause they look awesome.

It depends on whether I want to look cute or awesome.
