Default Rebuild of Evangelion episode 2 (critique of the movie, contains spoilers)

This whole critique is basically one big spoiler. Don't read if you've not watched the movie, and don't want to be spoiled.

I just got done watching the second Rebuild movie. And I'm left thinking "Ok, what did I just watch"? I mean it seems Shinji managed to SINGLE HANDEDLY start 3rd IMPACT! I mean with all his being so gung-ho to save Rei after the enemy Angel ate her and her Eva Unit (and kicked the a$$ of Shinji and his Eva very soundly), he and his Eva went berserker and let off a couple eye-laser attacks (normally only the badguys have that attack) at the Angel and then absorbed not only the S2 Power Core (as in the TV show), but absorbed the WHOLE Angel! And then all Hell broke loose and it ended on that note. I thought this movie series was gonna have 3 or 4 episodes, but it looks like the world is about to end. Not enough material to even have one more complete movie (maybe a 20 minute apacolypse sequence, but that's about it).

But even more they COMPLETELY BUTCHERED the original plot. Eva Rebuild 1 was good and followed the story VERY well of the TV version (only the Angel numbering scheme was off by 1). But OMG I don't hardly recognize the original story in this one (Rebuild movie 2). Touji is supposed to be piloting the EVA that gets hacked by an Angel, but Asuka is instead! Asuka's first battle is supposed to be against the Angel that splits into 2 copies of itself but instead she fights a COMPLETELY NEW Angel in her first battle, after the first girl who's fighting loses (who is a girl who's not even in the original Evangelion TV plot, piloting an Eva Unit which is NOT in the original TV Evangelion plot either). Also after defeating Ramiel in the TV show, Unit-00 is in need of a new paint job, and gets painted blue. In Rebuild, Unit-00 STILL has the yellow paint job, AND it has not gotten shoulder pylons attached (in the TV version these are also attached after the Ramiel battle). Also on the TV version, Zerule does NOT have the power to eat and shape-shift into his opponent, which he DOES in Rebuild. And lastly Eva-01 NEVER fired eye-lasers in the TV show, even when berserk. But in Rebuild it does so TWICE while berserk and fighting against Zeruel. And also during this battle Shinji's Eva's battery runs out. The circuits, including the nervous system sync circuits should be out of power and inactive then, but Eva-01 gets attacked in this state and Shinji STILL feels the Eva's pain. Yes it does reactivate at this point and goes berzerker, but BEFORE that when Shinji seems to feel his Eva's pain, his Eva is NOT active and so the sync circuits should have been inactive and he shouldn't have been able to feel this pain. A MAJOR plot hole right here.

I think what sucked most almost was they changed Asuka's last name. Nice to know that wasn't the ONLY thing they changed. That proves it wasn't meant to be a redrawing of the old show but somehow forgot her real name, but rather a COMPLETE REIMAGINING of it. This fact makes her name change more palatable.

That's not a plot hole at all. It might be considered an inconsistency in the movie's logic, but actually, at no point was it explained that "you feel pain because of these circuits and when they are off, you do not." It's perfectly reasonable to assume (in a work of fiction such as this) that perhaps after syncing, if Shinji does not exit the EVA properly, he will still feel pain.

I think what sucked most almost was they changed Asuka's last name.
Are... you being serious? They changed the last name of a character, and that is the thing that sucks "the most?" Why does that even matter?

The aim of the new Rebuild of Evangelion movies is not to remake the old television series. Much like the movies replace scenes in the television series, or provide alternate plots, these movies are trying to breathe new life into a 15-year-old series. The original will always be cannon, but it's nothing to get worked up over if the new movies weren't exactly what you were hoping for or expecting. Appreciate RoE for what it is rather than what you think it should be.

It is majorly inconsistant. Shutting off the sync circuits from the Nerv command center by remote control was the standard way (at least in the TV series) to keep the pilot from feeling pain (and even possible neural damage) in an emergency situation (a.k.a. when the EVA was getting a very sound a$$ kicking from one of the angels). Yet here when it runs out of power so its circuits are inactive due to battery draining (so it should have the same effect) but it doesn't. I mean the flat panel screens all shut off so he can't see what's outside so I thought all forms of information feedback (including nervous system feedback) were shut off. Seriously it's like the mech has powered down so he's no longer in sync (which required electrical power anyway) so then when you see him STILL feel the pain of his mech taking damage it's like just WTF!
