Fallout: New Vegas discussion thread.

Well, it has been released today. Time to start up discussion.

All things about the game as you play through it, planing on buying it an buying it/etc. go in here. And of course things about the game that you like/don't like.

I've never really gotten into Fallout, though 3 was fairly amusing to watch. If anything I'll get it for someone else, and watch.

Much of the original SPECIAL from Fallout 3 remains intact, with very few new features being added in the way of character creation or stats. Weapons now have a minimum strength requirement to be used, like in Fallout and Fallout 2.

One significant change is that there are no bobbleheads available with permanent increase to SPECIAL scores. The only way to permanently increase SPECIAL scores in Fallout: New Vegas is by purchasing expensive implants from Dr. Usanagi at the New Vegas Medical Clinic.

I'm so happy to hear this. Go Obsidian, dealing with the stupid min-maxing that ensued in Fallout 3 where people made broken characters that were all INT to max their skill points.

Hardcore mode is a mixed bag. I like some of the features, like healing over time and ammo weight, but maintaining hunger and thirst is more of a nuisance.

My God, I haven't enjoyed a game this much in almost a decade.
I've hit Freeside with my favourite Caravaneer babe and my pet eyebot after doing many sidequests including some that had me chuckling at the absurdity. Brings back fond memories of the first two games...

If you remember, I've never actually played the first and second games.

If -this- is what you meant, then I definitely take back what I said before. <3

This game is massively improved from 3. The reputation system is better, the dialogue between characters is expanded, NOW you can actually level to 30 (not 20), and the perks and skills have been updated! This is my new favorite game.

anyways, currently poking around with the Ghost Town Gunfight. After that, I'm going to do some exploring.

Also, I can't wait to find out what they decided to put where "area 51" is supposed to be.

Fallout New Vegas is so much more like Fallout 1 and 2 than Fallout 3. The overall ambiance, especially the (off-radio) music is much more the way it's supposed to. The RPG-aspect is much more true to the old games (with perks every couple of levels instead of constantly, traits, and general usefulness of base stats other than INT). The quests are much are more Fallout-like, in that they're actually interesting and well-written, and not dumbed down for "casual" gamers with an attention span of 3.5 seconds who fear they're no longer cool if they play a video game for more than 10 minutes straight. In the end, Fallout 3 just felt shallow and gimmicky compared to it's ancestors. But New Vegas manages to capture the setting much better, and just feels much more genuine.

Oh wonderful.. I couldn't reach Sunnyside in time because she was on top of those.. rocky hill things, and now she got killed by Geckos. Mission failed. .A.

True. I will most certainly keep that in mind for the future. One mission failed isn't that big of a lose though.

Oh, also, decided to pick the "cherchez La Femme" as my first perk.

Ok so I got my hands on New Vegas now

Started on Hardcore mode, and I like the fact you need water/food and sleep. Also like that you only get perks every other level and stuff like that. Makes your character more unique and more replay value. Only real ''issue'' I got is that the music is a little ''meh'' compared to Fallout 3... Also way to few tracks.. But I love everything else <3 (except when I got some kind of infinite loading bug....) also add me on Xbox live :3 : Dryaxx

I decided to play through without hardcore mode, because that way I could do it the second time time through for replay value.

I'm in Prinn right now,

in the My kind of Town quest.

Going to just head East from here and see what else I find.

I actually like these perks a lot better.

Yeah. It completely kills the RPG aspect to hand them out like candy. This way, your character build actually matters. You can no longer be the master of all trades.

I decided to play through without hardcore mode, because that way I could do it the second time time through for replay value.

The faction system pretty much guarantees at least two or three interesting replays as it is. If you side up with one big faction, you pretty much exclude the possibility of being friendly with the others, and lose access to their quests. You can play neutral, but that's yet another interesting replay that excludes possibilities. The fact that it's game over when you finish the main quest actually makes much more sense in New Vegas than it did in consequence-free Fallout 3, seeing as how you can't explore the whole game with the same character because of the bridges you burn in doing so.
