    Default Anime Stereotypes & Cliches

Anime, like all art forms, repeats itself. As time has gone by over about 40 years of anime being truly popular, patterns have surfaced in the medium over the years. These cliches are often VERY annoying but when done right, they can be really cool, and something you actually look forward to seeing in a series.

So, what are your favourite cliches and stereotypes in anime?

Personally, my favourite stereotype comes in the form of a character type as opposed to an actual event

I love Tsunderes, I really do. Whenever I see a Tsundere in an anime it ups its cool rating SIGNIFICANTLY, and they are EVERYWHERE. You may not know what a Tsundere is, so i'll fill you in, a Tsundere is a character, usually a female, who can be either extremely *****y or extremely nice, who switch to the opposite end of the spectrum when confronted by feelings of love. And i love them, Asuka from Evangelion, Misty from Pokemon, Keiko from Yu Yu Hakusho, Akane from Ranma 1/2 and many more.

So, what are your favourite anime cliches, stereotypes or stock characters?

I love tsundere too, they`re cool and they`re really cute when they show the dere side xD
Taiga, Shana, Louise(she is very very cute), Ookami-san.

The helpless girls in anime are blergh, like Orihime.
The tough girls are cooler, like Saeko from HOTD, my favorite girl in it.

I the super awesome short haired anime girl cliche such as Yuki Nagato from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya or Ichijo from Pani Poni Dash. Is there a term for this type of character?

Yuki nagato would be the "Emotionless Girl" stock character while Ichijo is your archetypal "Powers Girl" although is somewhat of a deconstruction because shes a good character as opposed to en evil creepy psychic.

Well, from what you said, I'd say Nagato would be a "Powers Girl" as well as an "Emotionless Girl" and since when is Ichijo a good character and not evil? She tried poisoning everyone! And Ichijo doesn't show much emotion either.

The stereotypical bad guy who is ALWAYS way to overconfident no matter how tough the good guy is for example, every bad guy in rouruni kenshin, or aizen/arrancar in bleahc, and pretty much every bad guy in one piece and in trigun.

Tsundere, definitely. Never came across a lovable->b****y one but I can imagine it wouldn't appeal to me as much. Shana was already mentioned I think, but yeah, I loved her character's development. Can't really think of any other good example actually... possibly Kyou from Clannad? She had a kind of a tough personality in the beginning, but we got to see her better side a the series progressed.

Kagami from Lucky Star I suppose.. not that it was an anime I particularly enjoyed. I just loved her character. She was like Kyou anyways, so if it applies to Kyou then it applies to Kaga

Haruhi came around after like episode 1, so I guess she's out.
    Tenshi from Angel Beats?
Oh.. and the main girl from B Gata H Kei... I think her name began with 'T'..

Sorry, I've turned it into a list of possible Tsundere characters xP

I think Akira Kogami from lucky star could fit your description of a yandere character, and I think she works quite well. She's my favorite character in the show. Though i do agree that Kagami is a great tsundere character.

I would say Ichijou is mainly a http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph...eirdnessCoupon and http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph.../ChaoticStupid. As in, she does insanely bizarre and sometimes even dangerous stuff frequently, and while the other characters may object occasionally, they ultimately let it slide and still let her stay as "one of the gang" despite it being illogical (but it's a comedy, so who needs logic?).
My name is Kakashi Hatake. What I like....I don't feel like telling you that. My dreams for the future...hmm, never really thought about that. As for my hobbies...well, I have many hobbies.

She doesn't really turn nice though, does she? All I remember is that she starts singing or something about hallfway through.. so you do see a 'softer' side of her, but I think that's it :O

No, she starts out nice, but then she turns mean and violent. She's such a great yandere character, no?

One of my favorite cliches is the "berzerker". Similiar to the tsundere, except it can extend beyond humans to robots and mechs. One moment the mech is under the pilot's control, but the next (usually after getting its a$$ kicked) it is in metaphysical autopilot (no autopilot program installed by the designer, it just out of nowhere becomes like a living creature, a beast, and kicks the enemy's a$$ in a major way). This often leads to it attacking OTHER GOOD GUYS after it has finished off the badguys, because its berzerker mode won't shut down, or it will do ANYTHING to kill the bad guys resulting in collateral damage and civilian casualties for anyone/anything caught in the crossfire. Some times it "feeds back" its berzerker effect to the pilot, causing them to completely agree with the mech's super insane killing actions and to more vigorously pilot the mech into combat for some more killing.

Some characters/machines involved in this are:
Evangelions and their pilots (from Neon Genesis Evangelion)
The Escaflowne its pilot Van Fanel (from The Vision of Escaflowne, specifically in episodes 13 and 14 this effect occurs if I remember right)
Gundams equipped with the Zero System (from Gundam Wing)
The android KOS-MOS (from Xenosaga: The Animation)
The superhuman fighter Kasshan (from Casshern Sins, first seen in the first episode when his eyes glow green)

    No she isn't.

Whereas Tsunderes switch back and forth between nice and *****y, Yandere characters are driven insane by their affection for a person

The term comes from from the words yan meaning a mental or emotional illness and dere meaning to show affection

Akira is just a ***** hiding under a thin layer of Kawaii

well, I still see her as a superficial yandere character. So she really isn't, but she kinda acts like one going from nice to *****.
So, would a better example be asakura from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya? She did try to kill Kyon. Or does that not count because she didn't love him.

But she didn't 'turn' bad or anything, and she wasn't any more evil in her dialogue. I have 0 knowledge when it comes to these terms, but I'd imagine she isn't, lol.

In my country that's called bipolar disorder. Personally I strongly dislike those sorts of characters because they make my brain hurt.

I seem to always have a thing about the anthro-girl when one is involved, my favorites being Horo from Wolf and Spice (Look to your left) and Krystal from Starfox. But my favorite stock-character would have to be the general psychopath that is neither the protagonist's ally or enemy and is only there to be destructive, like Vegeta from DBZ and Agito from AirGear.
