Well, personally, it depends for me. I will admit I spent hours and hours hunting for one and pissed off since I never achieved it, but I get a very satisfying face when I do get it. But overall, I am better off without them.

I see them as an extension of the game it's self; A way to greatly increase the overall play time of the game and replayablity.
There's also a bit of psychological reward in them; whenever I hear that little sound effect of unlocking an achievement, it really does make me happy.
