Default Are pessimists realistic, or just too negative?

I often ask myself this question.

Do you think pessimists see the world as it actually is (or through their own perception), or are they just being too negative, and not allowing a possibility for success to enter their way of thinking?

Sometimes, people tell me i'm "too negative", and usually I just think i'm being realistic about the probability of failure (depending on what it is.)

I don't really consider myself a negative person.

Being pessimist and realistic are two different things.
People who are keen about precautionary measures are not always pessimists.
Pessimists are different, in all cases they don't see things positive in all cases.

Well, by definition, pessimists are gloomy people who anticipate the worst, and have a generally negative attitude towards everything.

Look at it this way, if you're always pessimistic, you can't really get disappointed.

Pessimists, by their very definition, are doin it rong. They are the kind of people who I think would benefit most from organized religion. Realists, on the other hand, sometimes I wish even they would be a little more hopeful. Though, I'm an optimist myself, so I'm sorta biased.

Agreed. While I do think there's such a thing as being too pessimistic, being overly optimistic is just as bad.

There are times when I hope for the best, but I also like to plan for worst case scenarios.

There is a difference between preparing for the worst and expecting the worst. I mean, I always save my money in case my car blows up or something, but I'm not expecting such a thing to happen. Being prepared is good.

Between optimist and pessimist, I think pessimists are the most realistic. But they still try to find the worst out of a good situation, no matter how good it is, and that's still a fairly unrealistic world view.
On this day of days, most epic and prideful, you were born 15 whole American years ago!
Through the odds and by doing the impossible, you beat out hundreds of thousands of siblings in the great sperm race for the coveted egg.
    Probably via hax.
    Regardless! You won!
So remember, whenever someone picks on you or calls you weak or small.
Just remind them that you beat out a few hundred thousand other wimps.

And the grand prize was not dying!

The thing about pessimists is that they don't always see reality. Neither do optimists, but the thing about being optimistic is that you don't care so much about little failures, pessimists act like they're the end of the world.

Overall I'd say it's better to be an optimist. A positive attitude does help a whole lot (it's not just some cliche saying, it's real). It's weird that I'd say that, but it's life experience. Being a pessimistic "realist" held me back a whole lot, I couldn't even see clearly.

In fact I honestly believe that being a pessimist is an waste of time. At least for me, I want to live my life to the fullest. There isn't enough time in life to be wallowing in your own pity.

Here is how I name things. Optimists and pessimists are biased.
Pessimists only see the bad part of life, are paranoid and expect the worse.
Optimists only see the good part of life, are incredibly hopeful and they truly believe in the good nature of things.

While realists are neutral, they see the world from every point of view. They see the bads and goods, they think in probability, they don't think something good certainly won't happen to them, nor do they think it's certainly going to happen, they consider it's possible to happen.
    No Mercy,
    No Remorse.

Pessimists have opinions that are negetive and optimists have positive opinions. They just view the world differently. Neither are realistic.

I am a realist, but sometiimes I tend to fall into thinking too much about the negative outcomes and not expecting anything good to happen. It is a slippery slope, and being realistic sometimes isn't when you focus too much on the negative. I wish I could be more of an optimist in that respect.

In fact, though, I've never met a real pessimist, just cynics, skeptics and tin-hats.

It all kinda depends really? It's a good thing to start something with the idea of the "possibility" of failure, that way you will not be disappointed if it does fail. But to assume EVERYTHING will result in failure is NOT good because then you are not going to try it or put any REAL effort into it.

I base the chances of success or failure on probability.

Once you understand that the outcome of any event is dependent on a number, you don't really have to look at it one way or the other anymore.

Sometimes, people tell me i'm "too negative", and usually I just think i'm being realistic about the probability of failure (depending on what it is.)
My mom doesn't take me shopping anymore because I am not as hopeful about her investments as she is.
A pessimist thinks negatively about things because they can, while a realist will accept that there is a chance of succeeding, even if it is very small.

As a pessimist myself, I have to say we're just being realistic.

Success is always a possibility, but failure is the much more common result in anything that genuinely matters.

After all, there's no need to be optimistic about something that is fairly certain, and people who get excited about such things are generally seen as fools. The times when you would become optimistic or pessimistic are times of uncertainty, and things really only enter that kind of grey area if the chance of success is <50%. So, expecting to fail is simply expecting the most probable outcome.

Now, should someone still only see failure when the odds are beaten and success is the result, then that person classifies as being depressed-pessimistic.

Optimists "The glass is half empty."
Pessimists "The glass is half full."
Realists "The glass has 25 mL."

All can be true answers, so I believe there isn't just one right way to look at things, just different perspectives.
After more research it was determined that 2012 was the end of twinkies.

This is how I generally see things, but I was wondering if I was being too pessimistic, or not.

I don't want to discount possibilities, though.

I think that pessimists are just realistic people, it's a good thing to think about how things will affect you in the future and if you think it's gonna effect you badley then you have a right to say so, sometimes you can come across as being a party killer because of the decisions you make, but thats okay cos it's better to be sure about the decisions you make than be unsre and regret the things that you did.
