Default Anime/Manga inspired by classical texts? advice needed

    Hi
i am a big anime fan and hope to do my dissertation on it next year. the only way this is going to be able to happen is if i can link it in with english literature, so im hoping some of you experts may be able to name some films/comics that could have been inspired by canonical text (shakespeare/jane eyre/1984 etc...)
you help would be highly appreciated
    peace

The two I can think of off the top of my head are Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo and Romeo X Juliet. Gankutsuou is a great show, I don't like Romeo X Juliet all that much though.

Saiyuki was based off of "Journey to the West, which is a Chinese myth that I cannot remember who wrote it. Not sure if that fits for what you're looking for but it's all I got.
