Metroid: Other M

Yeah, this game. It's right around the corner (August 31st I believe?), so what are your thoughts on it, do you plan on getting it, and all that jazzy jazz.

I don't think I've ever been more excited for a game personally. It's like...i don't even know where to start. I not sure if it's the fact of it being Metroid or it being new, or what, but the more I think about it the more I wanna just run in Gamestop and take a copy before it's released. I've already annoyed everyone in my house so they won't even say anything that ends with "roid" in it xD

I wouldn't exactly say I'm excited about it but from what i played of it at a convention a while back it doesn't seem like it's gonna be a disappointment. I would buy it if i had the cash though since it just might be one of the better releases this year. oh and it's a new metroid.

I played a demo of it at a convention. It was... okay, I guess. The "side-scrolling" is good, but in third-person, you're not side-scrolling all the time - there are moments where you're in 3D environments, and moving around those with a D-pad can be awkward. The "combination of 2D and 3D" feels like a gimmick; I couldn't actually *move* in the first-person view, which basically made it the equivalent of the first-person camera angle in Ratchet and Clank, and not like the Prime games. Also, the game only uses the remote, not the nunchuck; you hold the remote sideways (like an NES controller) for third-person, and point it at the screen to activate first-person, but the response time felt slow. If they'd just opted to use a nunchuck, this game would control a lot better, on both the 2D and 3D fronts.

I'm pretty lukewarm about it, honestly. I love Metroid, but I don't really feel like this is the right direction for the franchise. I know a lot of people cried foul when the series moved into a first-person perspective with Metroid Prime, but in my opinion, in a 3D setting, that's the only perspective that makes sense for maintaining the blend of atmosphere, exploration, and action that the 2D games had. The fact that Prime's storyline was equally as minimal as the earlier games was also suitable. Other M's gameplay style and emphasis on dramatic storyline just seems awkward. :/

Also, a theory I formed while watching the trailer: Samus is despondent because she can't have children. The Metroid hatchling from Metroid II and Super Metroid was the closest thing she had to a child, but it died fighting Mother Brain. (Other M = Mother. Or maybe this is the long-awaited Metroid/Earthbound crossover we've been waiting for! There was a door that said "Dr. Andonuts" in Nintendo's E3 booth...)

I'm not a fan of the 2D-to-3D thing either (see what i did there?). The main reason I want it, besides it being metroid, is to find out more about Samus's past. The manga did alright, but it left it hanging at the end. I kinda think Other M might follow the manga somewhat from what I've seen and heard about it.

My main concern is how long it's going to be though. Wii games have a rep for being fairly short compared to other consoles. And it looks like they put a lot more effort into the graphics this time, which might take off a little more of that long story I'm hoping for. On side note, Team Ninja made Samus look completely BA, compared to the Prime series...which she was still pretty BA in. I'll be one of the few pressed against Gamestop's window at 8am though. If I can't have it first, no one can. >:

Well I can't imagine walking around in Phazon does a reproductive system(Or the rest of the body) any good. Also, I'm hoping Other M answers a question that's been bothering me since I watched Metroid and Me:
What was Samus going to feed the baby? I'd expect Space Pirates to have a bunch of throwaways volunteers to feed to them, but what was Samus and the science-types going to do? They don't eat people food, there's a Metroid in Echoes that did that and all it got was a tummyache.

Anyway, I think Other M looks good, and I would quite like to get it soon after it comes out.

How'd it get leaked? Even if I find out where to get it, I'll still support Nintendo by spending 50 bucks I shouldn't be spending. Though I might go and look some playthroughs of it up >_>

Sorry, I think I was wrong. My friend said it took him 7 hours to finish the game. Not bad for a Wii game, I mean Uncharted is 8 hours. ._.

Lies! Wii Kart is on a normal Wii dvd >_> (or a WiiVD as I call them). Up until this point, Brawl, the Prime trilogy and Other M were the only dual-layered Wii games.

G4's reviews are LOL to the max. A 2? What the hell, I'd give it a 4 at least. To be honest it was very amazing, I finished it last night. Apart from the Wii almost killing itself from the graphics, the story was omgomgomg. After you finish it you'll notice how perfectly Fusion blends into it. The controls worked fine, ignore G4. It made it more challenging having to dodge, charge, then point at the screen and fire a missile, then perform a final strike. Otherwise it would have been Ninja Gaiden with an arm cannon, but the only thing I didn't like about it was when it randomly switched to 1st person, and you had to scan something that wasn't obvious. And the music was....ehh, okay. But I wouldn't look at G4's reviews as they are either biased or just plain out bad. Everything they said in the review makes it seem like they wanted Samus to be a robot, not a young woman. But I swear this is as close to perfect as Wii games get.

But Samus loses her ablities just to follow orders?! Honestly, that's lame. I mean, I liked it when she was quiet and it would be understandable if she loses her abilities to something like in Metroid Prime 1 and 2. In Other M, she can't quit complaining and she follows orders?! "WTF?!" is what I'll say. I find the controls more complicated than the game, well, that's because I'm not a Wii person. I like the Prime series because of the 1st person prespective and the 3D enviroments. If I have to tell you the truth, I like the Prime Series over Other M. Other M was, IMO, and don't go insulting me for this, was just terrible.

People get an attitude when the games makes use of the motion controls or touch screen, and scoff when the games don't. It's like it can't win. I really, really hate it when people say "It was good for a Wii game" as though the Wii is somehow inherently inferior to other systems like XBOX and PS. Nintendo consistently tops the charts for number of units sold (Nintendo DS is first and Nintendo Wii is 3rd this week), of the top 10 games sold this week 4 are on the Wii and 1 is on the DS, and the Wii has sold almost twice and the DS more than three times the number of the closest competitor this week, XBOX. Yeah, go ahead and try to tell me the Wii or DS sucks.

When I said "...for a Wii game" I was mainly referencing the graphics, since the Wii usually discards high-detailed-graphics for gameplay. But the reason I think people think Nintendo's games are inferior are because there's no blood. No uberHDgraphics. No highly detailed this and that. And most of the stuff you see Microsoft/Sony fanboys complaining about. For example, my brother. He completely agrees that, while Nintendo games are fun, 360 games are better due to graphics alone. Personally I'd rather have high quality gameplay over detailed textures and high-polygon-characters.

Another reason I think they say it is because Nintendo, unlike the other two, constantly switch art styles. So none of those modern warfare 2/gears of war looks to their games. I LIKE COLORFUL GAMES, like Windwaker. While they're not going to admit it, the games "don't feel realistic enough" or "are too childish looking". I like games that are different, like Kirby's Epic Yarn (which is going to be AWESOME), Paper Mario, something new.

But yeah.
