Give creepy eye contact and say,"What? Your mother is a (fill in the blank)?" It's quite effective in starting a quick fight or make them shut up for good. Though, I haven't encountered such a scenario for a very long time now.

Whenever someone says something about my mom, I say "You're right! How did you know?!" They look at me weird if the person doesn't know me that well.

Meh, I usually just get a good laugh out of how pathetic said person must be for trying to insult my mother rather than going after me; though, granted, that hasn't happened for a very long time now.

If that wouldn't be enough to have them be quiet, I'd provoke 'em into laying a hand on me. It doesn't even have to be my mother, but anyone who goes around trying to insult my friends or family rather than me had best be ready to back it up.

To me, it depends on who says it because I know who says it as a joke and who doesn't.
