Magnets are majestic creatures. They are mostly solitary animals
,one might say they even repel one another, but as the mating season comes all hell breaks loose.
When one male meets a rival magnet they immediately charge and ram each other.Once intertwined

Magnets, how they work, in as scientifically inaccurate way as possible to satisfy the OP's demands, while still being kind of accurate.

Some things to be held as unquestionable truth (because I'm lazy and won't bother explaining why these are).
1. The universe is a lazy slacker, so it avoids wasting energy.
2. Particles (atoms, and electrons) have a property called spin. It has nothing to do with rotation, but is more like which direction they're facing.
3. Facing in the direction of the magnetic field costs energy. Facing away from it does not.

In iron, all atoms face in the same direction. This means they cause a big magnetic field. When you hold a piece of iron (a magnet) next to some ordinary junk, the ordinary junk goes "Oh, okay, you're the boss, we'll face towards you so we won't have to do a bunch of work." The universe smiles on this. If you put iron next to iron (a magnet next to a magnet), they go "I'mma face any direction I want! I'm no follower!", but then the universe goes "Oh yeah! Then I'm gonna pull you apart so I can eat popcorn and watch soap operas, instead of wasting energy on you guys being next to each other".

That's how magnets work.
