    Default Growing out of anime?

Am I the only member of this forum who first joined being a huge fan of anime/manga, but then present time starting to barely watch it and considered a casual or once in a month viewer? Like recently, the only animes I seem to watch is Bleach and Cowboy Bebop, and I watch those on rare occasions.Has anyone else here had the same thing happen to them? Or are you a bigger anime fan then before?

I've always been into animation in some form during my life. I watched shows like Looney Toons, Tom and Jerry, Scooby Doo (70's/80's version) till I was 16 at which time it became hard to find them on TV or I'd still watch them today. I got into anime when Toonami came about and was limited to that for years. I've seen an insane amount of anime since those days and the good ones tend to tell stories well. There are plenty of duds but if you know where to look you can find some real gems. That's one reason I've yet to get tired of anime and after watching 60 to 80 anime I've feel like I've only scratched the tip of the iceberg.

Definitely not to me, there's still plenty coming out on DVD (or already out) that I want or DVDs I love to watch again. And honestly, Bebop rules for sure, but you can easily find tons of better anime than Bleach, unless you're looking for nothing more than fight scenes (and even then, there are better choices out there).

Yeah, most of the shows I have been watching had been on going.

I can't find a awesome anime these days. Back then I found stuff like Black Lagoon,Hellsing,Afro Samurai,Gundam 00,etc.,and I loved them. I went back and tried classics like Eva and CB,it didn't work out.

The last anime that I found awesome was Brotherhood, but that is not in my top 10.

I haven't grown out of it, I'm just really picky about what I watch. If your show is bad by episode three, sayonara.

I go to phases where I get so obsessed with an anime where all I like to do is watch, learn, read spoilers, haha, and such then I somehow grow out of it, and find another thing other then anime. But after a while, I randomly find a new anime, and start watching it and getting obsessed once again. But I'm really picky on the animes I watch.. And I currently am not grown out of it.. so I'm not exactly sure what I'm saying right now. :\

It's hard to be me. =.=

I wouldn't say I've grown out of it. I first started watching anime on Toonami (excluding Voltron). I remember watching DBZ, Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo, and Zoids on Cartoon Network. Once I was into anime I went through most of the popular shows, new and old, and went through just about all of the rentals at the local Hastings. I've watched quite a bit of anime at this point and the number of shows that I haven't heard of or haven't seen has gotten a lot smaller. Mostly I'm just re-watching my favorite shows or waiting for a new show to come out that interests me nowadays. Every once in a while I find an old show that I haven't heard of that looks interesting and I'll take a gamble but mostly it's just a waiting game now. The number of new shows coming out in the U.S. (I like dubs) has gotten smaller and the number of those that I'll enjoy watching even more so.

Right now there's FMA Brotherhood which I'll probably grab at some point. High School of the Dead looks like it could be cool. I'm still hoping for an ending to Full Metal Panic which was the first anime I discovered and really liked after I got into anime.

I've been trying out new shows online at Anime News Network, The Anime Network, and Crunchyroll this summer.

I just went through Code Geass S1 which was decent, Jyu-Oh-Sei which I didn't much care for as

the writer seemed to kill of characters just to move the story along
and Kurokami The Animation which doesn't have a story that appeals to me.

My anime watching habits definitely haven't stopped but they have slowed. I'm still searching for new shows to watch though. There's always that money problem too, since I'd prefer to see the shows before I pay the big bucks for em. That'll definitely slow down my anime watching.

Really, it's grown for me. There's decades of animes to watch. Not just whats come out this decade. Trust me, the list hasn't shrunken at all. And the list for anime you haven't heard of can't shrink since you've never heard of them.

There's no way I'll ever grow out of anime, though its hard to find any good one nowadays. I find some that are occasionally good, but not as good as lets say Cowboy Bebop, or Code Geass.

The last one I remember watching was Clannad, which was totally different than what I'm used to watching. It didn't have much romance or perverseness as most anime's tend to have, and it didn't have any action. I still loved it though; it made you almost wanna cry. I wish there was a second season of it. *sigh*

Ah...GameGeeks, wiser than us all. A finite number of anime minus the shows I've seen and read about will always yield a smaller number. (Just because I haven't heard of them doesn't mean there is an infinite number of them.) Granted, more anime will come out of Japan every year than I can watch but how many of them will get dubbed and out of those how many are really worth watching. How often do you come across a "gem" of a show that others haven't heard of or discussed? There's a reason some shows become popular and a lot of others don't. Eliminating the genres I don't particularly enjoy (e.g. loli, yaoi, yuri, hentai, moe, etc.) the list only gets smaller. Using the resources available to me, such as browsing through Right Stuf or searching for similar anime on Anime News Network, the forums, Amazon, etc., as time goes by the displayed results contain more of the same ole stuff. You're right, there is an enormous amount of anime out there going bake a ways, and I am in no way saying that I've seen them all, but I'm not going back beyond the 80's and even then the majority of the stuff I've seen from the 80's is questionable. I prefer shows from the 90's and the current decade as the animation is far superior along with the production and dubbing qualities.

Maybe I should be more specific and say that finding good anime that meets MY criteria has become somewhat harder. There certainly isn't the myriad of widely available options that there was 10+ years ago when I started watching anime. For instance, when's the last time you walked into Best Buy and found an anime you'd never heard of? I'm a casual anime watcher that doesn't speak or understand Japanese and I take a Jim Gaffigan approach to subtitles. Yes, this limits my viewing ability but so be it. I'm not done watching anime and I'm still finding new shows but maybe I've become a little bit picky over the years.

There is, it's called Clannad After Story. You should definitely check it out as it answers a few remaining questions from the first season, mainly revolving around the mysterious girl and her robot who showed up every now and then in the first season.

Dark Regent, well yes, this sounds more like an issue you've created rather than the anime studios', not criticizing but just saying. Eliminating the genres you don't like won't affect much (hentai doesn't even count as they're always grouped separately, there aren't that many pure yaoi/yuri/loli shows out there in the R1 market, and even cutting off any pure moe shows only eliminates so much), but waiting for "gems" probably is a bad idea. Honestly, what's wrong with a show that's merely good or even decent? You can't expect fiction to be hitting home runs practically all the time. But anyway, in terms of dubbed anime coming out on DVD or have recently come out (and a few obscure ones that you may have overlooked) that shouldn't be eliminated from your criteria:

    Baccano!
Black Lagoon (Season 3 coming out on DVD next year)
    Claymore
    Darker than Black
    Eden of the East
    Ergo Proxy
Evangelion 1.11 (2.22 just licensed, coming out next year)
    Fantastic Children
    FLAG
    Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Ghost Hound (dub release coming out this year)
    Ghost Hunt
    Gundam 00
Gundam Unicorn (only available on Blu-Ray, but HOLY COW is it incredible-looking)
    Gunslinger Girl
Haruhi Season 2 and movie coming soon (Season 2 not that good, movie incredible)
    Heroic Age
Kekkaishi (airing on Adult Swim, DVDs probably late this year or early next year)
    Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple
    Moribito
    Mushishi
    Noein: To Your Other Self
    Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei (coming out soon)
    School Rumble
    Soul Eater
    Spice and Wolf
    Welcome to the NHK
X'amd: Lost Memories (coming out this year)
    xxxHolic

Older gems you may have overlooked:

    Gankutsuou
    Haibani Renmei (re-release next year)
    Le Chevalier D'Eon
Record of Lodoss War OVAs (re-release coming soon)
Revolutionary Girl Utena (re-release coming soon)
Serial Experiments Lain (re-release next year)
Tenchi OVAs and Tenchi Universe (re-release next year)
    Texhnolyze (re-release next year)

I still have loads of anime to watch such as Death Note, MAR, Gintama (however I cannot find any english dub and watching it online uses too much bandwidth)
So I won't be getting tired of anime anytime soon

Look also for Sci fi Harry.

Watching over 121 one animes myself, the newer animes aren't as good there are few new ones that are nice though my style. Just I'm picky on what I'll watch. Here are a few new ones though that are good:

Shiki is a new anime and it is good

Thriller Restaurant is good as well

    Aoi Bungaku

    Dance in the Vampire Bund

    House of Five Leaves

i have gone through many phases when i'm not watching anime or reading manga as much, but then it tends to come back full force. my longest "break" was about a year, though i still enjoyed anime at the time----- i wasn't watching anything new or being as enthusiastic about any particular anime

I don't think i'll grow out of it. I watched anime since i was a kid starting out with the stuff on Toonami. I then got into other stuff later that came on Adult swim or whatever i could watch on Encore, or i'll just go on the internet. I still have the dream of being a comic book illustrator, so i've been studying art books when i'm bored. I'm writing a couple of my own comic ideas but i'm concentrating on one currently, which is a high school comedy manga. It's pretty much me mocking my experiences in high school. I still watch anime, but i've been reading some good American comics as well. Probably the latest anime i seen was Golgo 13, Initial D, and Gregory Horror Show. I've just have a hard time finding stuff to watch since i don't have Anime Network or The Funimation Channel.
    Man that is whack!

I mainly watch it because my roommate, The Rebel, buys a lot of it and I have another friend who invites us over occasionally for anime night. If not for them, i might not even watch anime.

I love anime - always have and hope I always will - even if I stop watching it. But as of now, there is simply too much anime for me to keep up with so I feel like I'll never stop watching it.

I love anime because it brings us together, wether I will still like it in a few years or not, I don't know. But for now: Yay anime!

Whenever I hear of a new show from a source I trust (usually Gja), I jot it down in a Word Document, so I still have plenty I'm planning on watching, almost a whole page vertically.

my love for anime is always growing! even though i don't hav cartoon network anymore i still read manga and watch anime on dvd!

You find life unfair? Try being and egg. You only get laid once, you only get eaten once, it takes four minutes to get hard, but only two to get soft, you share a box with eleven other guys, but what's worse was the only chick to sit on you is your mom!

Absolutely but I'm not gonna force myself to watch an anime just to say I have. If a show sucks I'm not going to waste my time on it. I am in no way blaming the anime studios. Companies like Funimation will acquire the licenses to dub and release shows they think they'll be able to sell. Many of those will be aimed at a different demographic and won't interest me. There are always certain shows and certain types of shows you know you won't enjoy.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm still adding shows to my "want to" list at ANN. Like most, I'll watch a few episodes and give most shows a chance before completely blowing them off. I generally prefer to see them streamed first before I go buy them so it might take a while to get through them.
Baccano! (Tried the first volume, didn't go back for the next one.)
Black Lagoon (Season 3 coming out on DVD next year) (Own seasons 1 & 2, it's a good one.)
Claymore (Own it, watching it again now actually.)
Darker than Black (Tried it, found it kind of boring.)
Eden of the East (Maybe, looks like an odd premise.)
Ergo Proxy (Tried it, didn't enjoy it and only watched the first couple volumes.)
Evangelion 1.11 (2.22 just licensed, coming out next year) (Saw the original series and the retelling is on my list to watch.)
Fantastic Children (Not sure about this one but maybe someday.)
FLAG (On my list to watch.)
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (Own the original and I am waiting to buy Brotherhood.)
Ghost Hound (dub release coming out this year) (Been reading about it and will give it a shot when it comes out.)
    Ghost Hunt (Own it.)
Gundam 00 (Really liked Mobile Suit Gundam, 08th MS, and Gundam Wing but after trying to watch G Gundam (I have a "shining finger" for that show.) and Gundam Seed I haven't gone back to the franchise, I will give this one a shot sometime.)
Gundam Unicorn (only available on Blu-Ray, but HOLY COW is it incredible-looking) (Again, I'll get around to it sometime. The BR's not an upconvert is it?)
Gunslinger Girl (Tried it, wasn't for me.)
Haruhi Season 2 and movie coming soon (Season 2 not that good, movie incredible) (Own Season 1 and thought it was too convoluted.)
Heroic Age (Recently tried this one and I am still in the process of watching it.)
Kekkaishi (airing on Adult Swim, DVDs probably late this year or early next year) (Tried it, don't think I'm in the targeted age range of that show.)
Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple (Brother owns it but I watched it and didn't much care for it.)
    Moribito (Looks interesting.)
Mushishi (Tried it, not my cup of tea.)
Noein: To Your Other Self (Seen it around but never had an urge to watch it, I'll give it a try.)
Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei (coming out soon) (Might have to check it out.)
School Rumble (Tried it recently, I was expecting more given its hype.)
Soul Eater (On my list to watch.)
Spice and Wolf (Trying to watch this one but the part wolf thing is throwing me off.)
Welcome to the NHK (Tried it, not going back to it.)
X'amd: Lost Memories (coming out this year) (I'll watch for this one to come out.)
xxxHolic (On my list to watch.)

Older gems you may have overlooked:

Gankutsuou (Wasn't sure about this one, given your recommendation I'll add it to the watch list.)
Haibane Renmei (re-release next year) (Not sure about this one, maybe someday.)
Le Chevalier D'Eon (Seen it, brother and sister swapping places was kinda weird, not one of my favorites.)
Record of Lodoss War OVAs (re-release coming soon) (On my list to watch.)
Revolutionary Girl Utena (re-release coming soon) (Tried it, definitely not for me.)
Serial Experiments Lain (re-release next year) (Seen it around but haven't tried it yet.)
Tenchi OVAs and Tenchi Universe (re-release next year) (Own both the OVA and Tenchi Universe along with the movies.)
Texhnolyze (re-release next year) (Added it to the watch list.)

One of the things that's bugged me in the recent years is changes in the artwork. Shakugan no Shana comes to mind. Regardless of story I really dislike the way they've chosen to draw their characters which seems to be getting more popular. That'll kill a show for me.

This image always comes to mind:
