Recommendations plz

I'm looking for two very different kind of anime recommendations.

1) Something reminiscent of Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star: cute girls doing pretty much nothing. Not sure if I'm interested in K-On! though.

2) Something reminiscent of Ponyo, Paprika, Akira, Spirited Away, etc etc. Supernatural and mindblowing. I have seen most of what Studio Ghiblii has to offer and looking for something new I haven't seen that's similar.

Can't help with the first one but you could try Laputa: Castle in the Sky, it was done by the same guy who wrote Spirited Away. There's also Howl's Moving Castle which is basically a spin on the same story premise as Spirited Away.

Have seen both of those, as noted in the OP when I said "most of Studio Ghibli". I'm looking to branch out more.

For (1) I could say Paniponi Dash and Negima might fall into that category.
(2) Nausicca Valley of the wind and Princess Mononoke or most of the Studio Ghibli films, although I would recomend not watching "Tales from Earthsea" or at least not watching it expecting something of Studio Ghibli standards, it is an ok film but most of the SG films are very good and this one doesn't come close to them.

Gah...all I can think of is Ouran High School Host Club, not cute girls, but cute girl.

As for movies, it's not really like what you posted, but Tekkon Kinkreet was awesome, I'll tell you if anything else comes to mind, headache atm.

You could try watching something by Key, its really good in my opinion. Try watching Clannad. There's a lot of symbolism in it, and there are scenes about a girl in another world. It's actually supposed to be spoilers of what happens later in the series, but you don't know until you watch the whole thing and then you'll be like "Oh so that's how it is." Its also fairly sad, but I like it because there's hardly any ecchi in it, and its pretty funny.

The same thing can be said about Air, but I'm not sure you'll like it. It starts up pretty slow and gets confusing near the end, but I still enjoyed it.

If you haven't watched Wolf's Rain then you can give that a try along with Spice and Wolf. Wolf's Rain in my opinion was mostly about faith and had some symbolism as well. Spice and Wolf is mostly about economy, but the story is good.

And I know you didn't ask for something sad, but you could try watching Hanbun No Tsuki ga Noboru Sora. It makes references to some great novels and it gives you a different view of how one should live. And its only 6 episodes long.
