Well there's also people who's first taste of anime was seeing that on TV and that might have given them the wrong idea about dubbing. Also the Ocean Group who did most of the Gundam series didn't have many talented voice actors. Just look at how many time they cast Brad Swaile in something. lol

Overall, it depends which is the native language to the anime. Sometimes, in Japanese Anime, they say puns and stuff that you cannot translate, so when they dub it, it doesn't quiet make sense.

However, voice actors play a huge part. I highly prefer DBZ English compared to Japanese. On the other side, I couldn't watch Green Green dubbed because it was so horrible.

I prefer dubbed so I don't need to read and I can multi-task and listen to the anime and still know what is going on.

I like both. I tend to watch dub more because I can listen and do things at the same time rather than reading the whole time.

I don't mind either really. I watch whatever is available at the moment.
If I limited myself to only dubs I'd miss out on A LOT of really good anime so I don't do that :P
I do know some really good dubs though like Fullmetal Alchemist where I'd never watch the sub of that because the dub is just SO good

    Dubbed.
The reason i watch an anime is to WATCH the damn thing! Not to read it. I could buy myself a picture book if i wanted to read an anime.

Well for me it depends on what I'm doing and the anime. For example some anime I know have terrible dubs such as Rideback and then there are all some mediocre dubs like Euerka Seven where some voices are good and others just don't really match.

I always watched subbed. I prefer the voice acting and I know none of the plot or animation will be edited to make it more "viewer friendly" The original is always going to be better than an edited and changed version. Watching subbed also means I can watch more anime as many of lesser known but amazing anime's have no dub. So for me I'm always going to be sticking to the subbed versions.

Normal? What's normal? To only do what the masses do? And what is the benefit of that? Where is the problem in adopting a custom that is 'abnormal' if it has no negative affect on the world at large?

I usually watch the subbed version of animes, but I prefer the dubbed version for Sailor Moon, cuz it's what I grew up with. Switching to subbed just feels weird at this point.

    Original audio for me.
I grew up with budded SM (not in english) and even though liking the story still it was not my favourite thing until I came across the Japanese version and fell in love completely

in general I prefer everything in the original audio, because even if the translation are most accurate and all they will still have to edit the dialogues in a way to much the mouth movements.

Default Re: Which is Better: Subbed or Dubbed?

TBH it all depends on the anime. Sailor Moon: I grew up on the dubbed :/ and then I started to actually watch and I got to the later series and got extremely pissed off when they changed the voices and animation.

Now with something like Vampire+Rosario- the subbed is SO much better! in the dubbed, the biting sound is just moaning which got annoying quickly. But, in the subbed, the sound is "chuuuuuuuuuuuu" which I fan-girled over everytime XD

I feel like they are both good but it really depends on the voice actors i suppose. Like black butler had some good voice actors and attack on titan had good subbed version (japanese) voice actors.

    What's your opinion and why?
I cannot speak for Sailor Moon since I've never watched the series.

But in general I believe there is no black and white answer as to which is better; it really depends on the situation and what mood I'm in. I used to prefer subs, but these days I have no preference: sometimes I'll go for subs and sometimes I'll go for dubs. I might choose subs if the anime has lots of dialog and very little action; or conversely, dubs if the anime has lots of action and very little dialog. Ultimately, what really matters to me is coherence.

When done right, dubbed anime can be every bit as good as subbed anime. However, the status quo means that dubbed anime tends to mediocre at best, especially when aimed at easily-pleased kids as opposed to relatively-demanding adults. But there are examples of well-dubbed anime; you just have to know where to look and consider the incentives of the licensors. Some do consider the interests of demographics besides the ones that are easy money; but many don't; and some like 4Kids go too far by editing anime material at the expense of context, character profiles, or entire storylines.

However, that's not to say that I think subs are necessarily better than dubs; they may provide some sense of genuinity; but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are genuine. Only if I knew Japanese would I be able to tell for sure (in which case, subs would be irrelevant anyway), otherwise it comes down to near-blind trust in their validity. Even if subs are faithful, I bear in mind that translations cannot always be literal (for if they were, they'd make less sense in English) and interpretation standards may vary from one licensed anime to another. Then there's the fact that certain Japanese words pertain to expressions for which there are no English equivalents and vice versa. Lastly, I take into account that certain anime can be difficult to follow in terms of logic and reasoning (from a western point of view) due to cultural differences, and in such instances I find re-edited equivalents easier to appreciate.

For the record: even if a dubbed anime turns out to be considerably different to its subbed counterpart, what matters to me is how well each version holds its own--not the proximity of the former to the latter. And as long as it doesn't skew the plot, I'm not going to get all bent out of shape if a licensor removes a few scenes or recolours some characters. Since I choose to treat subbed anime and dubbed anime as separate entities anyway, I don't have to expend any thought on which is "better"--I can quite happily enjoy either version and appreciate each on its own merits.
