No, this isn't a thread for posting memes.

Is it just me, or are most most memes unfunny anymore? I used to think every single one was hilarious when I first discovered 4chan, but now I'm starting to see memes everywhere outside of 4chan, and I pretty much hate every single one of them. Granted, there are some hilarious ones/some hilarious takes on some that are otherwise unfunny.

Discuss, or share ones that outshine all the others (so long they're appropriate. Good luck on that one.)

I laugh at pretty much anything, so most of them are still funny. Even the horribly overused ones.

My god, I can't believe I used to say memes out loud in real life. I did the mistake of introducing my friends to 4chan and they went through a period where they would do nothing but look up memes. There are some funny memes like the "I'm 12 years old what is this", but otherwise, they're just not funny anymore.

I believe I went through a phase of "the internet is so cool I want to be like everyone else" mentality that most teenagers go through. Eventually, it goes away for most people but it's so sad to see 23 year olds say epic fail in a public restroom.

This. I intensely regret introducing a few of my friends to 4chan. There are some I'm glad I introduced it to, but the others make it painstaking. "HAY ROB I SAW DIS NEW MEME ITS SO FUNY GO TO KNOWURMEME.COM BLABLAHBLAH". It's especially awful because I've seen all the memes they're talking about and I've had time to get over them.

And yeah, everytime I hear someone say "epic", "fail", "win" or any variation of those words outside of 4chan, I want to exterminate them.

I quietly cringe in public when a meme is spouted. The only thing more annoying is the fact that my friends and I have used "Failure" to describe someone doing something improperly or failing to do something since before 4chan was even a twinkle in moot's eye, so now when we do it amongst ourselves in public there have been occasions where some moron overhears and informs us that we're doing it wrong.

I am not quite sure what you saying. Many memes are from 4chan, but not all of them are. By the strict definition of Internet meme, you are going to find memes outside of 4chan, as that is really the point, so I do not see what you are saying.

Sure, some have gotten a bit old, but as far as Internet memes are concerned, you are not going to escape them (whether on 4chan or not) and seriously doubt that you or anyone else here doesn't utter one out loud (despite some people's obvious annoyance of such).

I know not all of them are from 4chan. I was using it as an indirect example, more or less. I never said anything about trying to escape them - my point here is that I begin finding a lot of memes unfunny the more and more I see them/they're abused, and I was curious if anyone else felt the same way.

Some memes are staple and funny outside of the internet and 4chan, but some of them just piss me off when people try applying them in real life. Epic, fail, win, etc. being some that irk me.

I love memes, but they get annoying when people overuse them. I despise the hypnotoad now because of all the spammers on SA.

I actually find them quite amusing. The randomness really just adds fun, especially in serious atmospheres. Like in the case where you're in a serious, extended, debate or discussion, it sort of just either lightens your mood or teases you in a painstaking fashion.

Granted, there are some memes that I despise, but those are either forced, or out of some lame videogame franchise. But usually I can go with one meme for hours and still be entertained. Memes are common internet situations/traditions/expectations described in just one or few words. They are a calling of the internet; just like you use emoticons and abbreviations in your posts, others use memes to asses the situations.

The term of "meme" is synonymous with "joke that's been used so much that everyone knows it and is no longer funny due to such." If something actually reaches meme status, that means the joke was once funny.

Also, nothing good ever came of 4chan.

Old memes are generally not funny, unless they come in a very dense cluster, like in the Use Old Internet Memes!!! Become A Nuisance!!!-thread. In any other thread, most of the posts in that thread would be painful and awkward. But together, they exceed the sum of their parts.

The reason that he's still somewhat popular is because he's evolved with many different spinoff memes that take the basic premise and twist it ever so slightly to make something new. The best example would be Pokeparents:



This meme is almost endless, what with all the pokeman. Just connect one pokemon to one type of person (cool dad, lazy dad, business mom, ect) and you have something funny. With all the different pokemon out there, it's also a safe bet that you'll still find something funny from time to time.

The only real way to keep a meme around is not to spam or overuse it. That's a good way to kill something, like what radio does to music on a regular basis.

Unlike wine, old memes do regain flavor under your bed if left untouched, albeit slowly. I, for one, think the internetosphere is again ripe for the tyranny of You have two cows and various dirty limericks involving Nantucket.

The longevity of a meme depends on how quickly it gets predictable. Your basic memes like "how do I shot web" and "can't triforce" aren't particularly variable, and quickly get predictable and boring. More variable macros like advice dog et al. and even Russian reversals (even though they're ancient) last very long as you can vary them a lot, making them a lot more unpredictable.

Also I think comparing memes to wines is a mistake(unless its Merlot). A better comparison would be computers with poor fans. Its fun when you first start but after a while it just becomes sluggish and boring. The only way to make it good again is to turn it off and leave it for a while.

When I burnout from using the internet too much, there's usually something that brings me back in. There's things like 3guys1hammer that just make you come back after saying you're gonna quit.
