You know, he doesn't have it half as bad... Since he's being emo, he should just hang out with the quiet kids. Eventually they'll all start skating, smoking, wearing tight pants and junk like that.(7:52:09 PM) Sylvie: why were you thinking about suicide?
(7:53:22 PM) Ian: alot of stuff is goin on. loosing alot of my friends, my friend jothams dad just died..
(7:53:38 PM) Sylvie: yeah, i know his dad died. why are you losing your friends?
(7:57:05 PM) Ian: they hate my friends
Also, why is he suicidal over his friend's dad dying? I mean, if my friend died then I'd be pretty depressed.
Exactly. The brain during the teenage years is growing, especially in terms of the pre-frontal cortex and the amygdala, which controls emotions, are growing at this time. What makes sense to an adult in terms of coping does not always make sense to a teenager, nor a younger child. Even in adults it doesn`t always match up. I wouldn`t fault them on this lack of "logical" thinking by calling them stupid. If they`re suicidical or thinking about suicide then that sort of resentful attitude will only reinforce their negative feelings. I can understand it can be frustrating dealing with a person who behaves like this, especially if you can`t see what the big deal is, but that`s what the wonderful skill of empathy is for.
I`ve taken suicude workshops and ultimately I want to be a counsellor. The bottom line is that suicude is a reaction to a lack of proper coping, simply because the individual cannot think of another means to cope or believes that they can`t. At the same time, even I have trouble wrapping my head around the reasons why certain individuals kill themselves.
"A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool."
You're making a significant logical error: The assumption that suicidal people are healthy, reasonable agents. In significant chunk of cases, mental illness is afoot (clinical depression, bipolar disorder, etc.); and people with mental illnesses are by definition incapable of sound reasoning. You will have serious difficulties counseling someone out of a clinical depression (without the help of other treatments).
From what I understand, this category (those who are suicidal as a symptom of a serious mental illness) tend towards suicide attempts with higher probability of success. They're more prone to sticking a shotgun in their face, or jumping in front of a freight train than taking too many pills.

Hey look, Japan made a movie about me!
I suppose I could have elaborated on that more. I`ll agree that suicide or suicidal thoughts can be the result of mental illness, such as depression and bipolar disorder, yet I`m reluctant to say that all people who are suicidal or have suicidal thought fall under this category - that would be a generalization.
Perhaps it depends on the degree to which the individual is serious about this issue that can hint that there is more going on in the brain, whether it be a mental illness, hormones, or a hyperactive amygdala, resulting in being very emotional. A teenager could have thoughts about it, but depending on how serious their thoughts are, their reasons for it, the signs that are present to suggest that it is serious, could point to a mental illness rather than a difficulty coping or just wanting some attention. At the same time, psychologists or psychiatrists won`t diagnose something as depression until it significantly affects the individual`s life, such as skipping work, not eating, grades dropping, etc. They also have to meet more criteria than that. Someone could easily be suicidal, hide it well, and get through their daily life without anyone ever knowing. That could be diagnosed as a mental illness, but unless that case is presented to be looked at, it`s debatable.
This isn`t something that can be simplified - suicide`s a product of a lot of things, whether it be social, biological, or even cultural reasons. The reasoning behind it can be serious, and often misunderstood, but I`d hope that people could not see this as a stupid" choice because to the individual it`s not a stupid choice.
"A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool."
They never think far ahead, as in "When I die, how will everyone else feel? What effect will I have on them?"
That's what I always thought of. If I ever commited suicide, I would cause a chain reaction =/ If you feel like you can't take anything, go on a little "trip" to find yourself.
ooshy ooshy ooshy
He needs to get a grip. Losing friends is part of life. He needs to pull his big boy britches up and quit being a whiny little puke. But if he still goes that way, then here's a diagram of how he can fix his dilemma.
Oh, and I'm not horrible for my views on his solution, I'm politically incorrect. There is a difference.
More than likely if someone is telling you that they're suicidal, they're just looking for some attention to make them feel better, (i.e. the "pitty me, for I am troubled" card).
Now it's the ones that DON'T say anything that you need to keep an eye out for. Because a person that is seriously commited to suicide won't say anything because they don't want anyone to try to stop them. That's why you need to look for the warning signs in such a person.
This is just a random hypotheisis of mine but, I think that there may be some evolutionary product that causes an individual to precive it's self as a threat to the overall survival of the species, and therefore, will try to eliminate it's self to protect the whole. Now again, this is just a little hunch of mine, and I haven't looked into it further, but it is something interesting to think about.

i blame emo-itis, its the self harm thing taken to the next level. i think its kinda sad
hey, some people might just agree with that kind of idea... suicide; live a short life then die... it kinda shortens out the pain you might experience in the future, you know? like maybe how it feels to get an operation (wouldn't the recovery be painful, i mean "OMG THERE'S A HOLE ON YOUR BACK! OMG I CAN SEE YOUR LUNGS!! OMG YOU'RE BLEEDING! OM-- hello..? *poke*....*poke* hey don't ignore me! nurse!!! i think he fell asleep...)
will gladly take anyone as a friend... PM me!
Kids are the what the hell is wrong with kids.
From what I have seen it is mostly the teens that have depression problems that will follow through with the threat of killing themselves.
My sister is older then me but I remember when she would go around telling people she was going to kill herself because no one liked her, and the only thing I would tell her is "call me if you cant get the job done and I will be there to help finish it." she never did do just like the teens who say it now, because if you are going to kill yourself you are not going to tell other people who will try to stop you and tell you all this sappy stuff about all the loved ones you would leave behind. But this is just what I think.
Good and Evil have never been this cute
Personally. I think all teenagers go through the stage of believing they want to die. Until they begin to mature and realize.
Those who don't go on with it, its just a phase. And those who do I think there was an underline problem.
