    Default Video Game Movies

Simply as the title says: video game movies.
Talk about what you want to see as a movie and how you want it to play out or who you want to play in that said movie or talk about a movie that's already out and what you like and dislike about that movie. :3

My favorite is still the Super Mario Bros. movie that was made a long time ago. lol
And I want to see a Metroid movie maybe. Only if they don't ruin the story or get someone lame to play as Samus.

Long story short: They really all suck, don't they?

I was thinking about which I've seen that are fun, but, it's not easy.

Street Fighter is watchable, if you laugh at everything.

yeah i cant think of any that would be good they would probably turn out like the rest:

    Double Dragons
Mortal Kombat(guess there might be a new one......)
    Street Fighters
    Super Mario bros
    Resident Evil

Can't say i like any of these and I'd be afraid to go see one, cause a good chance it will suck.either it will try to be to close to the game as possible and it wont be good, or the story will stray so far you'll forget what it was originally about.

Most movies based on games suck so much. Lara Croft is kinda tolerable and so is Resident Evil, but they're still very painful to watch. And there are going to be more of these crappy movies! Prince of Persia, and I think even Bioshock, will have a movie. Hollywood and video games don't mix...

the best movie that was based off of a game is Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

And the only games that are based off of movies are:
    Batman-sega
    007 Nightfire-gamecube
I thought I could think of more, but I guess the rest suck.

Live action game movies are mostly crap Silent Hill was pretty good though, the anime Street Fighter movies are good and from what Ive heard Resident Evil Degeneration is good too, I want to see the Gears of War movie even though it will probably be a gimmicky 3D gore fest (hopefully it will be CGI) and the Halo movie if it ever gets made should be good if it isn't a gimmicky 3D special effect show but I have high hopes for it since the live action trailers for ODST and Halo 3 are awesome.

I like AC, it's not really based off of FFVII though. More like what happens next. Which is one of the reasons I think it succeeds. But yeah, most of them are bad. Though Lara Croft is fine to watch, but then any move with Angelina Jolee is a good movie in my book. Though she does have the benefit of being a good actress though. The problem with video game movies is that a lot of them have nothing to work off of. Take Mortal Kombat, it's a fighting game, how do you get enough for a movie from that? As for ones based on games with stories, they try to stick to the story too much when they should be adding and exploring the characters further while staying true to the story the game set up. If you're going to make a movie based off a game, you should probably stick to RPGs which give you plenty to work off of. Don't think I ever seen one like that. AC and Spirits Within don't count. Though that last one sucks on so many levels. I will admit I do like the DOOM movie though. But part of that might be like Tomb Raider except with Dwayne Johnson. And no I don't mean being attracted to him.

More or less... but most projects that come out of Hollywood involving Videogame Movies is "Quick Easy Money". If that's the original concept of the film, then you can tell they won't be putting much thought into it if they're only using the Videogame for it's name instead of it's content.

Yeah, Goldeneye was excellent. A game that's actually good that's connected to a film. There's a few Star Wars titles that made good games (but not all of them).

That film really had zero point to it, other then to show people what a Cloud vs Sephiroth fight looked like in CGI. Pretty to look at, but in the end it really didn't add anything.

I always enjoy reading this... then watch people react as I ask the question "Why was Spirits Within bad?" to see most don't have an answer.

In short, it really depends on the project and the intent of the project. If the director was cashing in to make easy money off fanboys who'll watch/buy anything with their favorite videogame's name stamped on it... then it's not likely it'll be worth watching.

Mortal Combat was the first movie to do this right. Although the intent was clearly to make money off a popular videogame, they made it relevent to the game, and added a story which made audiences who weren't familiar to the series care about the characters within the movie. Also that's another thing, they added personality to the characters. MK was good, but MK II was simply a cash-*****.

Comic book movies/games seem to be hit or miss.

That reminds me Assassins Creed could potentially be a good movie if they leave whole Desmond/animus story out of it.

@Burnt: I can actually answer that. Though I must admit it's been about ten years since I've watched it. But I remember the story was sub par, and character development was non-existent or was poorly done. Only thing it had going for it was the CGI. I can't really go in depth with it since it has been ten years. To me it was just a cash in on the Final Fantasy series. There wasn't even anything relating to Final Fantasy in it. It was completely Sci-Fi.

For someone who hasn't seen the movie in ten years, you sure did give a good response.

I somewhat enjoyed the film, found it to be pretty average but left the theatre entertained. Perhaps since it was a Final Fantasy project, people had such high expectations from it, going ape-s*** when it didn't meet their expectations. Yes it was Sci-fi, but at the time it felt like the series was going in that direction, and Sakaguchi kept his "New story with each project" run that he was on.

Take it as you will. I personally think the response is vague and if I remembered more a better response would have contained reasons which mine is lacking. And when I saw it I had only played two FF's at that point. FFVII and FFIV. Though I hadn't beaten IV yet. I may have also play one of the FF Quest games but I'm not 100% sure on that and I certainly didn't finish it. I did finish FFVII though. So the Final Fantasy aspect of it didn't play a big role for me as it may have for other fans of the genre when it came out.

Acceptable games based on movies/movie franchises. They don't even need to be amazing, they just need to be playable and enjoyable for the duration of time you'd expect a game to be enjoyable.
    Some are, however, ****win.
I'm only making this little list because people don't seem to realize that movie based games that don't suck actually exist.

    Goldeneye
    Spider-Man
    Spider-Man 2
    Alien vs Predator 2

That lost world arcade game. You know the one. You sit in a jeep with a friend, you're given two lightguns, and you go to town on anything that isn't human. Yeah...Game was cash.
    Peter Jackson's King Kong
    Lego Indiana Jones
    RoboCop Versus The Terminator

And let's face it, there's several dozen star wars games. Many are good, many are bad, some are excellence. Almost all of them are playable.

Now, acceptable movies based on games.

    Err...
    Advent Children technically counts.
    Silent Hill was...Okay.
The Resident Evil movies work fine...If you can convince yourself it's not a movie based on resident evil.
The first Mortal Kombat was passable, especially when you compare it to the second one.

...Here's hoping Prince of Persia doesn't suck ***.

... I hope that was a joke. There was nothing good about that film...
I don't know. I felt a sea of emotion well up inside of me when the end credits started to roll and my suffering was over.

    Here's the problem,

Far too often people in the movie business look for new ideas as to what they think will be good blockbuster titles. They see a video game and say, "Hey, well that video game was great and made a lot of sales, so in theory, it should also make for a good game." Yes, that would seem to be the case, but obviously it isn't.

    Here's why:

If you look at video games and movies as an art form, (which.. is what they are) you should know a basic rule of thumb that it's not such a good idea to mix mediums. That'd be like taking the Mona Lisa and making it into a sculputure. "Well, hey, the Mona Lisa was a great painting, so why doesn't it look good carved out of a hunk of rock?" And we can now see why certain art forms are only good when they fit the medium that they were ascribed to.

This is also why video games based on movies are almost always terrible. And in the rare case that they are good, it is ONLY because the form was changed drastically enough to fit the other medium. Sure, it can work, but only if you take whatever the movie/game was based on and deviated from the orginal so much so that it hardly resembles where it came from.

Punch line here being, The book was so much better because the person who wrote the book was writing a book, not a movie.

Ico would be amazing in the right hands.
There's no dialogue and a lot of epic scenery with no action.
As long as they stuck firmly to that concept then it would make an amazing film. But Hollywood never would. It would have to be an indie film and they'd never be able to piece the money together to make that scenery without Hollywood's help.
Also, Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy) and I suspect Heavy Rain would work, but there's no real point cos they're movies already basically.
    Most adventure games would work.
I'd love to see Monkey Island on the big screen.
Also, I think the Godfather games would transfer well to film....lol....

I think a Shadow of the Colossus movie would be great. No dialogue, very avant-garde and atmospheric. Could be a great idea for a very artsy film.

Hell yea! >: D I love the game so much that a movie would be so cool. Plus they could pull it off because it's not like Halo or something. lol

And, no, I wasn't joking. I loved Super Mario Bros. >w< I just wish I still had the VHS.

    @Homer
    Yes! If only, if only. ;-;

Gears of War should be cool. Halo. . . I want to see a trailer first. Bioshock should be very creepy. lol But awesome! >w< I'm starting Bioshock 2 tomorrow.

I would have to say the only decent live action movie I've seen is Silent Hill. Even that was a bit disappointing.

See Ico, predecessor of SOTC, same reasons why it would be a great movie

It did horribly and for good reason... But I really enjoyed Legend of Chung Li and I still hope by some weird miracle or act of complete stupidity they follow through on their teaser and make a sequeal with a TRUE Ryu and Ken focus.
