I take the Zac Bertschy approach: if it's a show about Japanese people (i.e. Death Note, Paranoia Agent) I will watch it in Japanese. If it's a show about the West, space, etc. (Cowboy Bebop, Irresponsible Captain Tylor), I will watch it dubbed.

I could never stand watching the Cowboy Bebop sub for the simple fact that all the characters have Westernized qualities, so the language they were speaking was unfitting. Similarly, Death Note is obviously set in Japan, so them speaking all-English seemed a little off.

Though, if the dub/sub is really, really bad, I will watch the opposite despite the setting.

Also, if access to the anime dub is more convenient, then I'll just go with the dub for sake of time.

For those of you hardcore subbers, I never really got why you think English voice actors don't put as emotion or aren't as realistic as other voice actors, and then you use 4kids as an example. Last time I checked, 4kids didn't make every single dub.

For instance, the Eureka Seven dub, the Cowboy Bebop dub, the Neon Genesis dub, and Hayao Miyazaki movie dubs are all ridiculously well-done. I actually liked the English dub of Castle in the Sky more than the sub because Pazu's voice was irritating in Japanese.

As long as they dont butcher the show to hell like they did with yu-gi-oh, initial d, or dbz (the original dub), I prefer to watch dubs over subs. For me when im watching a sub, it always seems like im concentrating more on the subtitles than whats actually happening on screen. Also one more thing, sometimes the subtitles disappear too quickly, before I have a chance to read it so I have to rewind parts at times and it can get a bit annoying. I rather kick back and just enjoy a show and understand whats going on without reading and rewinding. Its not like I hate watching subs or anything. It just watching a dub is more convenient to me.

because: 1.The original anime drawing (the mouth movement) is for japanese, some time the dub didn't do a good job for that, other time, they try to get it synch *spelling?* with the animation by add more or cut out words. 2. Japanese voice are sooo cute! dame I cannot immagine how the K-on girl would sound if they dub them T..T (they better not). 3. Sub let meh learn japanese.

Anime mouth movements are almost never animated to fit any particular language because they are hardly animated at all. They are simply animated to move up and down, considering the exhausting amount of time and effort that is put into animated other aspects of the character's bodies. Rarely does anyone look at mouth movement, so that's the least of their concern.

Now, if you look at a Western animated show, like Spongebob, you'll notice the mouth movements are animated to fit particular words, such as their lips circling to make an "Ooo" sound in a word. This is because there is less detail put into other features, but that's the whole point of those kinds of cartoons, they're supposed to be simple, yet amusing.

Dubs are good if the company puts a lot of effort into making it good rather than just churning it out as fast as they can without knowing what they are doing.

The mouth movement problem comes from wuxia films. Subbers love to claim it but there is no data to support it because, like you said, they don't animate with mouth movement in mind.

So long as they dont tamper with the plotline, i can't say i have a problem with dubbed anime... (anime is anime after all ^^) If i can, ill try and find the subbed but it doesnt bother me if its not available- heck, i prefer some series as the dub! (although granted, sometimes when youve heard the Japanese voice actor its a little surreal to hear the English version...)

For the most part, I'm accustomed to sub. It just sounds so much more comfortable. I find most dub very rigid...
The way they pronounce things (especially names) really bother me...
That is, if they didn't change the names altogether like they did in Detective Conan.
For me, the only show that had amazing dub was Fruits Basket. The voices where so very soothing. In comparison, the Japanese voice for Touru was too shrilly.

I don't know. I guess it just happens Americans have corny voices when it comes to anime. I mean, the voice acting just seems horribly hackneyed and incredible (incredible as in not-credible, not believable), especially when it came to attempts at "evil" or "luxurious" voices. Or sometimes the American voices just don't fit. Especially if you had already watched it subbed, since the voice of the Japanese voice actor just starts to sound natural for the anime characters, so switching to some American accented voice actor would just sound weird then.

That's true. I'm sure if you spoke Japanese very well, you'd notice more problems.
The only thing I don't like about dubs is that the quotes are often lame. Example Code Geass:
"I won't let you insult this man any longer you oaf."
"That's the kind of flash I'd expect from Marianne the flash."
But some subs translate weird too.
on Code Geass, "Suzaku, stay your hand."
On Gundam 00, "It's a girl."
However, this has more to do with translation than anything else, but I'd thought I point out both to be fair.

I have nothing against subs, I just prefer a good dub.

However, like subs, not all dubs are good. When it's a show I want to watch with a bad dub, I go sub.

I can`t stand english dubbing, it sounds dumb and fake.
But as Darkseid said above, not all subs are good, just look at Crunchyrolls subs, their wrong :P

Sub 95% of the time, and that 5% consists all of shows I grew up with as a kid, so, I'm guessing it's just cuz I'm used to those voices. But there are a few shows I can watch sub, but I've never liked the dub OVER a sub, just found it bearable, like Ergo Proxy, my favorite show, it had a great dub, but still better sub.

I like dubs, mostly because it's some of the only anime I've been exposed to. I dislike subs because I don't want to have to constantly stare at the screen every second that I'm watching the show, for fear of missing what a character is saying.

I will say that the voices in subs are usually cooler, however.

I do like dubs. I enjoy English as well as Spanish dubs, when it comes to Spanish dubs, they have to be "Spanish Mexican"; from all the Spanish dubs I have heard they are the best of the best in my opinion, not to mention they are the pioneers of the dubs (that's what I have heard). What I usually do is watch(download) the whole Anime in Japanese the first time, then If I liked it, and I think it is worth buying it, I buy it and watch the dubbed version. So dubs are okay with me, some of them might be horrible (like many I know but I would prefer not to mention) but there are good dubs too. .

I hate it when it's dubbed in English because most of the time they ruin everything like when 4Kids does it like they did with Sonic X. >_<;

Not anymore. Not every company is 4kids.

Funimation does solid to great dubs now, for example.

Fair enough, we all have our taste.

In my experience, it seems to be split down the middle. I've seen epic wars over nothing because one person said they prefer the other, but usually it happens when said in a smug way. I really want to avoid that fight.

Wow, six pages lol @.@; Anyways, I'm not a purist. But I do prefer anime subbed 99% of the time. The only exceptions are the animes from my childhood, like DBZ, Yu-Gi-Oh! (even though 4Kids butchered it big time), and Pokemon. When I watch a new anime, I always try out the Japanese version first, and if the voices impress me, then I'm sorry for dubs, because I guess I don't give them a chance. But if the voices aren't so impressive (which is extremely rare), then I'll give the dub a try.

No, they don't. FUNimation did a poll that got thousands of participants, and people who preferred watching dubbed was a little over half. Not to mention American VAs get large crowds of fans at conventions. "Almost every" is way off.
