    Default Horror Movies. Decline...???

So I'm a big movie fan I especially love Sci-Fi and Horror however the last few years have been dreadful for Horror movies in my opinion. Sci-Fi/Comedy/Drama etc have all been fantastic but Scary films still suffer.
I think the last ones I enjoyed were The Mist and 28 Weeks Later both in 07. This week I watched The Fourth Kind(2/5) and Survival of the Dead(0/5). I'll prolly go and see Shutter Island and I should hope that will be a bit of a revive.
So basically I'm wondering from you guys
    1/If you do agree?
    2/Why you agree/disagree?
3/What you find most effective in your fravourate Horror films?

I also enjoyed REC-2007-but def not Quarintine.

Horror Films suffer for two reasons these days.

    The first reason
    Remakes of old horror films

    The second reason.
    The freakin' Saw franchise.

The Saw franchise isn't scary, it's just Shock Value.
Once the initial shock is gone, you no longer care. By the third film nothing you see disturbs you.
What's worse, people try to emulate the Saw franchises..."Success"
    And what do we get?
Gore filled shock films like Hostel.
Seeing a head severed isn't scary. And seeing somebody getting tortured isn't scary either, it's just...Pointless?

I mean, just look at the friday the 13th remake.

    Tit's
    Tit's
    Killing
    Tit's
    Killing
    Killing
    Tit's
    Killing
    Oh look a hockey mask.
    Tit's
    Killing
    Killing
    Killing
Homage to the original films ending, poorly done.
    End Credits

You can only go through the motions so many times.

And you know what's sad? Really sad?
You know a horror film is going to suck when you see
    A) Exposed Breasts
    B) Teenagers
    C) The F word once every line of dialogue.
In the first 5 minutes of the film

    what will make it better?
Less Shock, more Psychological Horror...And more Lovecraftian Horrors.

This was basically what I thought when I saw "Open Water" for the first time.

It was literally: boobs, shark eats people, the end.

    I dislike horror movies because its always hard to sleep afterwards. I'm easily frightened and I begin to think that it can happen in real life. OO;

I used to have that awesome scared feeling(and trust me I got it with REC)but now not antmore.

Batman 1000% my feeling so so true Saw one generslly tried a more psychological aproach and that was fantastic....but the other like 12 )or whatever they're on now) were just "gorenography" I have little hope for the future but with all the remakes sorry to rephrase that with all the terrible remakes that hope is fading.

I warn you. The movie I suggest isn't for the feint of heart. But try watching:

    The Cannibal Holocaust
if you're a horror/sci-fi enthusiast. It may be an older film that you might have seen. If not, then give it a try.

naked boobies = guaranteed violent death.... at least in a horror movie

horror movies have steadily been on the decline for 15 years. some of them have been good movies, but most of them haven't been scary. i enjoyed 28 days later and weeks later a lot, but didn't find them very scary

the last movie to scare me was event horizon. i was 14 and my dad had to get me in the theater because of the r rating. i went in and was the only person there. i think thats what freaked me out more than anything

Cannibal Holocaust isn't a horror film. It's a gross out film more than anything.
It's 2 hours of naked boobs, gore, genocide, and animal slaughters.
Granted, I felt like vomiting when I found out they were chopping up an actual live sea turtle, monkies, that racoon thing, and the other animals...But that's only because I knew those were real animals getting butched and eaten by the cast members.

The problem with horror movies is the idea of trying to be more than a horror movie. You can't just have a horror movie, hell no that's crazy. You have to be a comedy, drama, social commentary, etc. Movies like Zombieland (quite possibly the worst movie of its year. It tried so damn hard to be Superbad meets a zombie movie and failed) that just can't be happy by being a horror movie.

Oh, I agree that the horror movies that have come out are not very good. The majority of them are poor remakes of older movies or movie series' that have already run their course. For instance, they`re making a remake of the first Nightmare on Elm Street. There`s 5 or 6 out already, why start again, especially without Robert Englund?!

And if the movies aren`t American remakes, they`re remakes of foreign horror films. The Ring, The Grudge, Pulse, Dark Water, One Missed Call, etc. are all Asian horror movies that were redone for American audiences. Some of them were good, others I haven`t seen, but it`s more the lack of creativity that`s bothering me about this whole thing. I mean it`s one thing to make a movie about a well established scary creature like a vampire, but not take already made stories rather than make new ones is pathetic. From a business perspective it`s brilliant because why invest money on something that could flop than invest money on something that was previously successful. However, I`m not a businessman and I love the arts, so I`m grumpy about it.

However, some movies that have come out recently and tickled my fancy have been The Descent (although that was British), 30 Days of Night (which was based off a graphic novel), The Exorcism of Emily Rose (an American twist on a German case), and Paranormal Activity.

My favourite horror movies are John Carpenter`s The Thing (a remake, but a brilliant one with the special touch of 1980s effects, not cartoony CGI stuff), The Exorcist, Rosemary`s Baby, Event Horizon, Alien, Aliens, Ravenous, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Shining, Misery... oh, the list goes on. I love horror movies, even if they caused be to sleep with the light on since I was 13 What made these movies effective was the originality of them, the fact that the books based off them were fantastic (especially the Stephan King books), and the effects were more genuine... CGI looks too cartoony for my taste and it actually makes it look more fake in my eyes. I admire the hand on, artistic talent it took to create monsters in older horror films, especially in the 80s.

I haven`t seen that, but I`ve been meaning to! Honestly, I`m more in a mood to track down horror classics and the ones that initially shocked people rather than look at the new stuff. I`ll even find the Japanese Guinea Pig series if I can.

Ahh with all this talk of the foreign film industry I had forgotten I have 'Lat den ratte komma in' to watch and that is suposedly brilliant, altough I hear they are making an American remake even though it was only released in 08.

Cannibal Holocaust I have seen but let me tell you gore deosn't really shock me I dont like it and its certianly not scary imo.

Ow and the remakes are just bad bad bad and 3D how the hell can a movie be scary in 3D with all those terrible effects going on? CGI has been known to take away the scare factor eg, I Am Legend good movie terrible effects and what with the Omega Man being so good and all.

The Genre is dead to me, we get little gems like let the right one in sometimes, but every year we get loads of terrible horror films.

I think horror movies is to broad of a term. It all depends on what one finds scary. For me its movies like The Grudge and The Ring. Suspense with disturbing scenes is a good description. My friend Shawna thinks just suspense is scary but laughs at gore (Wrong Turn is her definition of true comedy). I do, however, think that horror movies makers are trying WAY to hard. The classics are good because we had never seen something like that before. They're the original of their type (i.e. Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Deliverance, etc.). We don't fall head over heels with horror movies anymore because the plot is repetitive and beaten like a red-headed step child nowadays. I think that if film makers can be original for once, the market may open up again. Shutter Island is a good movie to use as an example for "original."

I believe there had been a large decline in horror movies. Well, how good they are anyways. I love horror movies but I don't think I would ever watch them alone. I tend to sketch myself out when I'm alone which is real strange. There are some good classics from back in the day such as The Shining. I am not sure if you would classify that one as a horror but it was pretty thrilling to me. I think the first Saw movie was pretty good but, they just made it real long with all the sequel movies following it. I don't really have a favorite horror movie. I think that if there based on true events or on events that could have inspired the movie, is good enough for me.

On another note: Shutter Island is very good AnswerBAK. I think you'll like it.

Good to hear Dr.Evil/Infinita I have some time off school next week and I'll definitally go and see Shutter Island in my local cinema.

I think asian horrors are quite good though the long hair and skinny pale girl is used way to much its good for Ringu and Ju-on and what not. I think I have to agree with your point of broadness Dr.Evil with horrors be it suspense, gore, slashers, psychological or even comedy horrors they have all decreased in quality in my opinion.

Just a quick ask-What a is your all time favourite horror flick and why you like it so much....?????

    what will make it better?
Less Shock, more Psychological Horror...And more Lovecraftian Horrors.
I agree totally with all of this. I haven't seen a good horror movie in awhile. I mean 1408 and Paranormal Activity were pretty freaky, but most of the others are just really gross. Like torture and and stuff. It's hard to watch.
What's with all the naked people in these movies, I mean, do they think only perverts watch these things?

You didn't watch Paranormal Activity. You left in the middle of it.
Paranormal activity was good. Best I'd seen in a while, actually. I was looking forward to Shutter Island. Glad to hear it's good.

    You're right.
Zombieland was quite possibly the worst Horror Movie of the year.

Because it wasn't a Horror movie...Nor was it trying to be a.

Zombieland is however a Comedy Horror. And judging by the money it made coupled with the reviews it garnerd, I'd say it was pretty successful.

All it takes is nudity and blood to make a scary movie interesting nowadays to simple minded people.

Then pray tell, why are they called "comedy horror" movies? Just because a movie is successful in the box office, it does not equal quality.
