Your aiming mainly at HistsuGAYa right?
If so people like that get popular because fangirls cheer.Look at Edward Cullen,he is popular because of girls, but if he was ugly he would be crap.
For spiky hair, it's a symbol of independence...of being wild, or perhaps free-thinking. These are qualities that most people see in themselves, whether it is really true or not, and just makes readers feel they can identify with these sort of protagonists. That...and it does look pretty cool.
I can't really explain the whole white-hair thing, beyond the fact that white is a symbol of purity, and white hair is something that is not natural.
"Spiky hair", as it is often described, in manga and anime in general is really just the drawing of individual locks of hair, rather than individual strands as one sees in realistic artwork, or the full shape of the hair as is common in American cartoons and comics.
"The color fades along the intervals I follow."
I didn't think white was a symbol of purity in Japanese culture...?
On-topic, I have made the same observations about spiky-haired people being protagonists and/or super BA. At the same time, notice how many rail-thin guys and gals are super strong, how glasses never fall off and hair never gets in the way of fights, how little kids can be/often are more "powerful" than adults, etc. Might just be another "one of those things."

LMAO. I still think he's crap no matter what.
OH YES, I SAID IT!!
Um...........for the spiky hair thing......it doesn't matter to me much. I like characters mostly for how they act. Hair color and style is irrelevant, though I'm not much for butch haircuts or bald dudes. I'm a big fan of long bangs and I think guys with straight hair are just as "cool" as guys with spiky hair.
Not sure on this but the spiky hair look may stem from Japanese idol popularity. If you ever flip through a J-rock magazine, they look IDENTICAL to anime characters...XD Their hair is CRRRAZY!
I think it is......since a lot of pure innocent characters DO wear white...unless they're using the Western symbolism for it. I have to research this. I do know that red and white together means good fortune.I didn't think white was a symbol of purity in Japanese culture...?
oh the Spiky Hair Archetype?
i don't have an issue with spiky hair personally, though it is getting old. i want to see new hair styles, mix it up. variety is the spice of life...
the white hair i just don't get. it CAN'T be natural on someone young. i've never understood white. there are so many other colors. if you want different, pick magenta or powder blue or mint green or anything. why white?
"Thinking of you, where ever you are..."Sig by me
Lmao since when is an anime character's hair color EVER considered natural!?
If the anime boy/girl is BORN with blue, pink, or green hair, being born with white hair makes just as much sense. I do think white hair suits a character who is not a human being better than one who is though, since that makes it more believable. An angel or demon compared to your average schoolgirl for example.
But don't forget about albino people too. They are rare but they DO exist.
Speaking of hair colors......there is one thing that bugs me A LOT with many many series. The main characters always have an odd hair color...yet their unimportant classmates ALWAYS just have brown or black. Whaaat, so if they're not special, they have to look boring!?
LAZY ANIMATORS ARE LAZY.
on the white hair thing, i recently watched a german movie called the White Ribbon where the children who have sinned wore a white ribbon as a sign of the pure path that they have strayed from.
on the spikey hair thing i think it is just because spikey hair looks cool
Spiky hair, there is several "reasons" that make's it that, but first, DON'T INSULT HITSUGAYA!!
Spiky hair can be that, it's "easier" to draw, it fits into it abit better, ususally the protagonists/"important" people has, Ichigo has spiky hair, Hitsugaya in Diamond Dust Rebellion is one protagonist and "important".
You can say spiky hair is Anime's/Manga's own type, IRL, it is way harder to get Toushirou's or Ichigo's hairstyle to look as real as possible.
Heeey!
Could you imagine a show where everyone had fairly normal hair, normal builds, normal skin/hair/eye hues?
Bad Memory
I actually never noticed that o_O but now thinking of it your absolutely correct. Some examples : Goku / Naruto / Ichigo Kurosaki / Kakashi Hatake / Etc.
Nonon Jakuzure - Best Kill la Kill baePretty damn great! #spoke2soonOta "The Cutest Otaku" 2016 - Lol, how's your account doing lately? Oh wait.
I have noticed that as well the main heroes tend to have spiky hair often. I guess the creators of most animes just enjoy drawing characters with that type of hair style.
