I came across this article today about the Reed siblings.
I didn't think that it was such a big deal (this may be because I'm Japanese, though). But it did irk me just a bit that the writer talked about them as if they were full Americans, who were skating for Japan, as opposed to them being half.Born to an American father and a Japanese mother in Kalamazoo, Michigan, all three Reed siblings – Cathy, Chris, and Allison – will skate in the Vancouver Olympics. None of them are members of Team USA.
Huh?
Because of their mother's Japanese citizenship, Chris and Cathy hold dual citizenship in the United States and Japan. They'll be skating for Japan.
Allison, meanwhile, is taking advantage of the new rules to skate for Georgia's national team, home of her partner, Otar Japaridze.
A lot of the comments also shocked me as well, because there were a lot of people calling them "traitors" and saying that they should have their American citizenship revoked because they chose to represent different countries.
Any thoughts?
