Real vs Online. Version 2.

I think I remember making a thread like this in 2008, aka probably around the first months I was a member on anime forum. Now, we all have different view points on the highs and the lows about online dating and how it is compared to real life dating. Now I'm personally a believer in both cyber dating and real life dating but I'm not a believer in online sexting which I find gross and competely desperate.

Even though you never truly know who's behind the keyboard when typing I personally believe cyber dating isn't all that different from real life dating. I mean the feeling to be able to touch your girlfriend/boyfriend is completely gone in online dating but that doesn't officially mean that the love is completely gone.

What are your thoughts on cyber dating and do you believe it could be as true as real life dating?

I'm personally turned off to online dating from personal experience ;>_> If you're talking online to be friends, that's cool. And you're right, you don't know who is behind the keyboard unless you check...but that would be considered stalking lol. But, just because I'm not into online dating -anymore- doesn't mean others should be turned off to it. Hey, it could turn out to be great or not so great, you just gotta give it a try

I admit I've never had a girlfriend, and probably won't for a looonnnnnngggg time lol. But incase I ever look for one, I think I'll stick to the girls in town or around >_> lol

It depends soley on the people who are interacting with eachother romantically. If they truly feel that their emotions are real then it cant really be helped. I think wanting to be with someone and have a connection is so sweet in real life or online. No one wants to be alone. ^^

Online dating can be harmless as long as people arent silly giving their real location or age or name. I know it kinda defeats the purpose of dating online at all but you can never be too careful. There are alot of sick people out there. Oo;

"cyber dating" is a waste of time. You can't see, hear, or in some cases smell the person on the other end. Sure you can look at a picture or use skype. It's not the same. And what if you want to interact further than typing at each other? You can't even decide to walk somewhere together, because you're online. What if you really hit it off with this girl? You can't even try to kiss her, since you're not there. The upside, I suppose, is that both parties can give in to complete laziness and forsake clean clothing and personal hygiene. I'm sure that's liberating, but I can't see how.

Ive met (in person) very good friends through the internet, (very carefully). But i would not recommend it at all! My partner i am with and have been for five years, we have a house a dog and we met eachother online and it wasnt intended at all!! It was like facebook, not chat rooms or pants like that which i disagree with, but i can understand where your coming from. Im 25, i dont drink (i do smoke), i work hard, i dont go clubbing,...etc. I would never like to meet someone in a club, absolutely off our faces, one night stands etc...its not the way for me at all!! I wouldnt go as far as saying "online dating" but just chatting is acceptable.

I lean more to in real life dating, the advantages are point blank. As for the internet, it can be deceptive and rather indirect.

I've met people from online in person, but never a romantic interest. We actually had a big lan party in college at this one dude's house, and a bunch of our clanmates showed up that we'd never seen before. Played with them for years, but never seen. It was really awesome.

I wouldn't do that with someone I'd just met though. Those guys have been our friends for like...three years before we invited them over. I'd be up for meeting someone from here or another forum for a beer or something, but I think that'd be it.

I've done both. Online dating can really work if you're the right kind of person, but it's terribly hard. But that doesn't mean you love the person any less. At the same time, dating someone in your area requires time and money, so just make sure whichever you choose you are prepared to put forth the effort.

Ive learned my lesson from both.

Real dating: Sometimes things get in the way, like school or work. When you hang out it never feels like its enough. Usually ends from being too separate or because of too much things keeping you busy. Also jealousy plays a major role.

Online dating: You never know how much lies you will get told. You trust someone too much and then the truth hurts once you find out. And also since its online the other person expects you to be online almost all the time which can be very nerve-wrecking if you want some time for yourself.

Then again it could just be the people I chose to date but that's a story for another day.

I believe there is ways to feel loved online and offline. It may not be as strong as it would be in real life but you never know. I know people that have been together a great long time online. The only bad thing about that, is when you get so accustomed to talking online, meeting may be difficult or scary in some people's eyes. It just all depends on the people involved in the relationship really. And you would have to trust that person a lot.

i dislike internet dating. i think it takes out the physical and social sides of dating, and in my opinion its not really a relationship. the physical and social aspects are part of a whole, that is the relationship, and when those parts are removed it becomes something entirely different. however, if two people were to get to know each other online and then meet in person and begin dating i think thats different.

the internet, texting, etc have begun to make kids socially inept, but i guess that argument is for another thread

IMO the one big advantage online dating has over the offline(I refuse to say real life, internet people are people too!) dating scene is how its less shallow.
If you start dating someone online, it's likely because the way they talk and the things they say appeal to you. Meaning, you're actually appreciating them for their company and like their personality. God knows when you first get interested in someone offline you usually have no idea what they're like as a person.

K, so looking over the posts so far, I'm going to balance it out and take the side of Pro-internet dating.


There are ~6 Billion people on the Earth. So why should a person feel as though they should only be limited to those who live with a given proximity of where they themselfs live.

The phrase "there's someone out there for everyone" sort of loses it's luster when people taboo meeting anyone that you can't originally meet face to face, (meaning only around where you live).

The expensive part is actually going out to see them. Which has to be done rather quickly. It's probably the number one reason why online/long distance relationships fail. Although this is just speculation.

It's like like you're gonna see them once a week, more like once every 3 months or something when there's a day off, holiday, vacation, etc. I'd consider it potentially dangerous to carry an online relationship for over a year without actually meeting.

I've met some people through online dating services, but all my best relationships have been with people I met offline.
