'Two wrongs doesn't make a right' has relevance. If someone does something wrong, and you do something wrong back; you've both done something wrong, and you have become a wrong-doer yourself.
In what way does striking them back undo the fact that they struck you? Furthermore, what do you get out of striking them back? Returning in kind out of vengeance only makes you predictable and easy to manipulate.
Also, not one of a kind. I can find records of at least one other person who did the same. Some cat named Jesus back in the day. Said a lot of stuff that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and had a cult of personality that said even stranger things; but the part about turning the other cheek is quite solid.
