In a classroom full of 40 students, I'm the only one that likes anime. >.<

My high school was about 15 - 20% Asian (mostly Chinese and Vietnamese), including me being half Chinese. I'd say at least half of the students knew what anime and manga were and could probably name some of the series that were popular on US TV, even if they themselves were not fans.

So what? My classmates don't either know what anime or manga is and when I tell them that I watch so and so on TV..they look and then giggle at me showing as if I am so immature to watch kiddy cartoons. But hey, it doesn't matter to me. Yea, the other reason for which they give me that look and giggle is that I watch a bit action-packed anime so they'll look at me and tell that these things are not meant for girls. Huh, who cares about them..it is just me who I should be bothered about..lol..that's what I can say..

Well during my 4th - 10th grade years of school, I've only met a select few who like anime. A good guess would be around six kids? I've only met two fans of Pokemon but I'm sure there are other kids in highschool that watch anime and read manga and don't communicate it around public schools. I knew one girl who did that and I found out she liked anime when me and her talked after school.

I know how you feel. I've been in groups before and I'm the only one who likes anime. My sister and I are the only ones in the entire town, or so it seems.

It really depends on where you live in the country too.

For example, I live in Tucson, and the High School offers "anime/manga class" has an anime club, online site, and events.

Even downtown they hold atleast 2 anime conventions each year. The popularity of it here is HUGE. It's presence in this city is well felt even by those who don't like anime/manga.

I grew up in NY and went to school and community college there. A pretty good portion of my high school at least new what anime was, and a bunch of them were fans. In college the anime club was the largest club on campus, it was so large that the school was forced to section us off into a separate area of the cafeteria.

But now I go to University in Tennessee, and while there is an anime club, and I do see people with like anime patches etc, it's not as big as it was when I was in NY. I guess it's not as cool here?

at my school, the kids with the nickname "freak" are the ones who like anime and manga and there are about ten of them who band together.

if you're like me, you try to keep your anime addiction in the closet. there's a bunch of us who love anime, we just only talk about it to a very select few. it's not that we're scared or embarrassed to be called "freak", we call ourselves it everyday, we just can't stand those ten kids and to have to eat lunch with them or... no...

and when classroom assisgnments come along like that, we try to be as discreet as possible about anime. we usually just replace anime with video games. we still get blank stares at that one, too...

when i was at school, nobody knew what anime was...let alone manga, my friends thought i was very odd. I used to go to the city and just sit for ages reading some of the manga they had, buy some lunch then scoot off home! It was my dad that actually pointed anime out to me when i was little...and always staying up late, catching the odd Hentai haha!!! You should give them a manga to read, and just tell them to figure it out themselves

It's my hobby and I'm proud of it. So if someone asks me what I'm into, I'll include anime in the list. No one has ever called me a freak for liking anime. I guess I just have really nice friends? haha

as i'm sure you have come to realize, the south can be a strange place. we get excited about things, you just can't tell. are we laid back or lazy? .....i dunno, probably both

The reality is, I live in Japan, which is the home of anime for godssakes, and I would sooner kill myself than admit in a classroom that I watch and enjoy anime. I imagine it would be pretty much social suicide.

Here in America people will just look at you weird. It's not to the point where they will bully you like in Japan, but it's still weird to see someone read those flippity floppity books in class.

Anime and manga are really only big in large cities. If you live in a place like Brownsville, Kentucky there's a pretty big chance you're one of few anime/manga fans. If you live in San Francisco or New York there's a pretty big chance you can randomly choose people off the street and will have at least heard of anime.

On a sidenote, in my town it's taboo to like something that is not hip at the moment, so I refuse to let people know I watch these Japanimation cartoons. Not to mention the fact that the people who like anime in my town are freaks who draw their lives into manga.

We had to write a small paper on things we enjoy to read or watch. And of course on top of my list I put manga & anime.

My professor first asked me what it was in front of the class so I explained expecting for a least one other person to add on to what I was saying or something along those lines. Anyway, then the teacher simply said;

"Umm... ok... so it's like a chinese magazine or I mean Japanese like book? Hmm, with a show of hands who has heard of or likes to read Manga?"

I raise my hand proudly and I look around to see nothing but blank stares and no hands up but my own.

How is that even possible? Lol O.o

One of my best friends in school has tried to read manga with me NUMEROUS times and she reads it wrong >_> I keep showing her the right way....she read a Shonen Jump once from the WRONG way lol and said it was good XD that I do not get at all *dies from sudden flashbacks* x.x
