So I apparently have a virus/adware/malware. My posts and PMs sometimes also include a huge block of text that I couldn't understand.

Also, sometimes Firefox closes out randomly, which I thought I was either crazy or accidentally exiting out of the window. Anyway... I have McAfee Antivirus, but a fully inclusive scan didn't find anything. Are there any good, safe, and free scans I can do online without having to download stuff? I need to know which file it is, then I can use a killbox to get rid of it.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is great for a quick scan. Avast can run a pretty heavy scan as well. Windows Defender is another alternative, which you should already have if you're running Vista, provided you keep it updated..

I don't know of any that do online scans, but I do second Xero's malwarebytes suggestion and Ad-aware is good too, but it doesn't do viruses.

Beside Malwarebytes, you can try Dr. Web CureIt. A lot potent than Malwarebytes (I'm reckon it's the US version of Dr Web), it can detect viruses/malwares than not detected by the current installed AV.

Most of the time, when Dr. Web detected the suspected malware, miraculously the AV will detect prompts you take action (Based on my previous job experience).

And if you're able to eradicated the malware from your system, you need to clean up your registry since most of the free solution unable to do it. There will be some residual left from the malware; manually or using 3rd party programs.

This doesn't make any sense. A registry key-value pair alone can't contain executable code. So if the virus resides exclusively in the registry, it's essentially dead. It needs some form of executable to actually be able to do something.

AVG didn't find anything. I couldn't figure out how to get the Malwarebytes thing to work, it prompted me to buy the full version. Can someone give me a download link because I seem to be doin it rong.

Avast! is currently doing it's thing, but so far nothing. I'll look into Dr. Web next.

Double post, wah wah wah. Okay, Avast found nothing. So... wth? Are you sure I have a virus Eris? Which scan should I be using, 3 different anti-viruses found squat!

Are you sure it's an actual virus?

If you don't already have Spybot Search and Destroy, download it. That's what I use.

I'm not sure though, if there was a virus, one of the scanners should have picked it up ...

Not as far as I know. Online scanners are for single files, not for entire PCs. From what I've seen, Online scanners that claim to do so are scams.

For Avast!, you can try doing a boot-time scan too. Maybe that might catch something.

I did the boot time scan and a scan after booted, neither picked up anything.

If you're using Windows based OS, it does make sense. Some of the malware design to run on startup. It will put its executable files on startup and these files are also presented in the registry.

So, even you have deleted the .exe/.bat/.com files in the hard drive, its registry entry reminds. When the user didn't clean the registry, the Windows will try to execute the programs that suppose to be start when the Windows is running. It will be annoying every time user have to dismissed the error message that said there are missing files on start up.

In worst case scenario, the malware injected code in the registry will ensure the virus stays in the system even the user have clean the computer/try to modifiy the Startup list.

Okay anyway... the Malwarebytes didn't pick up anything. Dr. Web was srs gonna take 10 hours to run, so I quit it. I then uninstalled AVG, Avast!, and Dr. Web and reinstalled McAfee. Of course, it did a scan of the computer before installing itself and again, did not find anything. I then used the McAfee Virtual Technician and it didn't find anything wrong with McAfee.

So I can't figure this out. What is wrong with my computer? Is a virus or malware/adware the only options, because nothing is picking it up. I'm so confused.

Not so tech savvy but could it not be a virus and perhaps some weird screw up with an add on? You're using Firefox, right? Did you get some new add on recently or anything else new? Anything at all?

No, didn't get any new addons before the problem started. I tried Spybot and it said it caught 7 entries browsers and fixed them. I have no idea what that means. Translation?

Are you sure it nags about this? I typically just remove software by deleting their directories on the computer (since I largely don't give a crap about the integrity of my windows install). And it never nags when programs that are registry-started have gone missing.

If executable code can be stored in the registry, windows is even has an even more mind-bogglingly stupid design that I had imagined.

First of all, a virus can't exist in registry. Registry only points on the virus.
The worst case is when the virus modifies winlogon.exe executable, so that beside userinit.exe executes the virus.exe ... but if you just delete virus.exe, the system won't login anymore. There are several ways to go around that but it's kinda a pain.

You need to urldecode it though, and the database chops it up into strings separated with a space, so you get some junk from that.

I did a google search for some of the variable names, but I didn't find anything conclusive as to the cause. It could be that it randomizes the namespace prefix (here: leo) to make identification harder though.

Just in case ... http://live.sysinternals.com/ get autoruns (2 or 3 files), run it, and screenshot the "logon", "winlogon", "drivers" and maybe also "scheduled tasks" (make the names/files names visible)
