This is one of my favorite animes of all time.

There's been a lot of TTGL threads, they just don't last long. Since it ended there hasn't been much use discussing it...most threads just devolve into exclamations of hot-blooded manliness.


That being said...an amazing series. Action packed, an awesome story, lessons to be taught, wonderful animation (excluding episode 4), and utterly ridiculous. A reminder of what made anime great before it was ruined by an endless onslaught of highschool dramas and moe.

Well actually...aside from the fact that it has the largest mecha in anime history...a lot of anime have done what TTGL has. In fact, TTGL is nothing more than a tribute and a parody of the super-robo series of decades long passed, especially GaoGaiGar, to which it can attribute most of its character archetypes.

What it did do is put some kick back into the super-robo genre, which had been kicked aside over the last decade (along with the mecha genre itself), in favor of real-robo series trying to become the next Evangelion. Of course, this is the same thing GAINAX did in 1997 with Evangelion when most mecha series were trying to be Gundam.

TTGL has one the most annoying fanbases that even exceed the capacities of the Evangelion fandom. Gainax knows how to run shows in to the ground. I'm waiting for the most-likely-to-occur spin-off of TTGL because Gainax doesn't-know-when-to-stop.

Don't forget controlling probability and other things that gods only wish they could do.

That anime looks a lot like Gao Gai Gar. I guess it should be the other way around since Nekketsu came before GGG.

Go Saurer and Gao Gai Gar looks a lot like A TON of the mecha that came out during their time - the nineties (early-mid). Raijin-Oh, Ganbaruger, Exkaiser, the list goes on...

Anyway I believe almost everything I wanna say about TTGL has already been said by previous posters... All I can say is it definitely brought back 'testosterone' in the genre - a feat that even new versions of some of the most epic Supers (Gaiking, Reideen, Jeeg) failed to do. It's arguably the best mecha anime of this decade.

Awesomely ridiculous describe this show well.

I think the director of this show took all the tired old standards of mecha and shounen fight shows and exaggerated them all beyond all belief just to show how truly ridiculous it all is. I love it.

Heh, well there's not really much else one can say about Gurren Lagann that hasn't been said already. It's a god damn personification of all forms of manliness, god-like mecha, and all the "get in your face" action an anime fan could want in a series.

All that aside though, there was just one thing that really irked me, and that was the ending. Even in the new movie, which I was really hoping would give us an alternate ending, Nia still died and Simon went off on his own. For everyone who's see the very beginning of the series, I think a lot of you can sympathize with me when I say that I was expecting something completely different.

 

Although, I have to say that the newly redone final battle against the Anti-Spirals was amazing! It was by far better than the original series, all the way down to Simon and the Anti-Spiral going fist to two-dimensional fist.

I've always hated Mecha anime, and while I searching for a new anime to watch I ran into a picture of this one. I saw Yoko on that picture and my lower brain decided I wanted to watch it...

Turned out to be one of my favorite animes despite being a Mecha....
