5 centimeters per second - WTF? (spoilers)

So I watched this movie as someone recommended, but it seems as though it never goes anywhere. The guy falls in love with a girl, they go to different schools, and when he comes back to her 10 years later, they are no longer interested in each other. Did they really need 1+ hours to essentially say that "long-distance relationships don't work?"

It's kind of depressing, but there's no reward for watching it. Nothing ever happens.

when you love someone with all your heart... you cant allow him to leave... or you will end up like they did..

they are definitely not happy... he will continue to think about her all his life no matter what...
she will get married soon... ..while going through some old things, she finds the letter she intended to give to him but never sent... (because she didnt have the courage -.- ..yeah right) ...she feels nostalgic and also very sad... that shows that she still has feelings towards him., ...eitherway she has to move on with her life... being unhappy or not.. its too late to change anything

The point of it was to show how the progression of life can crush the feelings of love that one might hold. In this sense, it was a masterpiece, and Shinkai's use of imagery to support this point was outstanding.
