Well I'd say Mozart. He wrote some of the best symphonies in the world.

Well, what Mozart did write was very nice, but it wasn't very ground-breaking. More like he mastered what styles were already there.

I'd have to say between Beethoven and John Williams. Beethoven being one of the most influential composers of the classical period, and John Williams being the most influential composer of today.

My favorite was Franz Schubert. I heard most of his compositions and i just LOVE his work.
"Andante Sostenuto" , it was on Piano and was also one of Schubert's last sonata's , and i still love hearing to this one .... its just peaceful , love to hear this anytime ^^

By that analogy, the White Stripes are not one of the best bands of this decade because they merely combined the already existing styles... Then if we take it even further, every piece of art anyone ever created is the sum of their experiences and therefore can't be truly original.

Anyway, as with pretty much everything else, I can't just name my favorite composer, since I will disagree with my opinion very soon, but I kind of feel like listening to Giuliani right now.

You misunderstood, or haven't actually taken any sort of Music Appreciation course or don't understand music theory. Not everything is based stylistically.

Mozart based everything he wrote around the existing Sonata cycle, using the same instrumentation as every other composer of the time. He did nothing new, he simply did things right.

I know and I'm just saying I don't think it's a bad thing. For instance, Haydn was a groundbreaking artist from the same era, who basically created some elements that would be widely used afterwards and everyone who knows that is thankful for it. However, that historical value of his exceeds the actual quality of his composition (I'm not saying it wasn't high), because these same elements he created have since been perfected by other artists... such as Mozart.

Well, I guess it's assumed. Nowadays music is rarely composed, but rather created by sampling or at the jam sessions or something.

Michael Giacchino (recently did the scores for Star Trek and Up)
Samuel Hazo (just ..awesome)
Joe Hisaishi (umm .. HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE! .. also some studio gib. stuff AND he has just alot of single work)

Klaus Meine of the Scorpions. I recommend listening to the moment of glory album to see where I'm coming from. Hurricane 2000 and Crossfire(instrumental) are two unbelievable compositions. This is why he rose from rock star to music god in my book.

I would say Conor Oberst or M. Ward.
They both make the most beautiful music.

Edit: just to clarify, I consider them composers, whether others do or not doesn't really matter much.

foster is a personal hero of mine. along with john williams and john phillips susa.

on a different note, nobuo uematsu and yoko shimomura are favorites. the music they write is touching and astounding.
