Well, I knew. But then, I'm study physics for a living. Everything is radioactive to some degree. Even water, soil and air. It's called background radiation. And as we've evolved in an environment with background radiation, it's perfectly safe.

In fact, if you ever get a hold of a Geiger counter, just stick it out in the air. It will click (detect radiation) once or twice every second.


Though, the 14 Bq decay rate cited seems awfully low. A human the size of a banana would decay 45 times per second ( = 45 Bq).

This is why most nations go broke.They research useless information such as this.The only thing i could see this good for is if you wanted to kill yourself by radiation intake.But you're going to have to eat a lot of bananas

It's not really actively researched. More like a side-effect of the same research that brought us nuclear reactors, smoke detectors, the atomic bomb, and a host of other useful things.

And no matter how many bananas you eat, you won't die from radiation poisoning. Bananas are less radioactive than humans are, on average.

Better question to ask is who didn't know? As Eris said, most things are radioactive and well if you wanna make the news then eat a lot of bananas and die that way, which is a unlikely way of dying. I also noticed your tiny pun in the title.

A LOT of people don't know the first thing about radiation. The current status of the world on it is that it's some horrible thing that will cause cancer and other mutations. Most people don't even realise that you are constantly subject to radiation. There is actually ambient radiation coming out of the ground all the time (tried to google an amount, couldn't get it), not to mention from the sun and electronics.

Radiation is just a fact of life. But a lot don't know that.
