I don't know if I could imagine myself at the age of 30+ getting irc anymore, I mean I have seen people at an old age having a myspace and msn, but is it still necessary at that age? You see, I don't know that I'll stop. I mean, the way I look at it, we're really the first generation to grow up with the internets and all those wonderful things. Is there a socially defined cutoff date? Who knows? I'm sure it looks improper the older you get, but what do they know?

I believe the cut off age is when your so old you can't see the screen anymore even with glasses, and you're are forgetting why your on the internet in the first place.

i imagine by the time i'm 90 i'll be about as mature as your average AF user, so i'll certainly still be on the net. right now i'm 21 and i act like a 5 year old when i'm not acting so naughty that the chat mods get on my case

Well, yeah..but actually, it's not who can you talk to but who would like talk to you..I mean we are mostly prohibited to talk to adults because, this is the internet and adults are very mature to do anything and when we know that the very person is that much old, we just try to ignore him, especially when we are really younger than that person.

The other point is that I feel very abashed while talking to children younger than me, then, why would I want to have communications with them when I get older? Yeah, I prefer friends with those elder to me..lol..

I'm not sure there will be such an age (for all services, maybe for crap like myspace). Keep in mind that the reason older people don't use these things is that they didn't exist when they were younger.

Also, there are plenty of 30+-year olds on IRC. It's just that they favor different channels from teenagers. They're usually academics and F/OSS guys who were using the internet pre-AOL invasion.

You all seem to forget how new and fresh things like MSN face book and myspace are. I bet you by time your 30+ you will look old school for still using them due to newer forms of communication for example virtual chat rooms, free calls nationally (which you can already do now) And more intergrations between ones Avatar and ones chatting.

True, when I asked myself this question I was also thinking that the "old" generation" didn't have too much technology.

But in my opinion, people over 30 years old sitting irc are pretty much lifeless. And I say that because I know a few personally, lol. I do know older people administrating forums as well, but except that I still think that it comes an age when you should have other preoccupations than talking to people irc you don't know, never saw and probably never will as well.

This is like asking if theres an age to stop playing video games. In which case, no. I'll be playing video games till the second I die. Which the media would then blame my death on video games somehow.

True, but that's because it looks improper according to the precedents set by the previous generation before us, IE our parents. I can still imagine myself watching anime, browsing forums, and chatting on messengers upwards to my 40s and maybe beyond. It's what i love to do, and i doubt that will change.

Though a social life IRL doesn't exclude a social life online and vice versa. And what if they are talking to people they do know on IRC. IRC is a very important communications channel in the open source software development community, where most participants are in the 25 to 50 age bracket.

If anything, when you're 30, your offline social life is seriously impaired by the fact that you can't really "hang out" or party like younger people, since you must be rested at work the next day, limiting your social interactions to family and coworkers.

I'm pretty sure that in my 30s I will be doing something on my laptop instead of reading the newspaper like the past generations.
