Default TV shows that defined the decade.

Hey, it's almost 2010 and that means another decade is coming to a close. (If you start at 0 of course.) So I was wondering....

What 10 television shows do you think defined the decade? They can be anything from anime to something on MTV, but they should try to capture the spirit of the decade. Remember they may not be the best shows, but the ones that define the 2000s!

    Here's my list

    Survivor
    C.S.I.
    American Idol
    Spongebob Square Pants
    Family Guy
Who wants to be a millionaire?

    Malcolm in The Middle
    Lost
    Smallville
    Sex and the City

I'd probably remove Sex and the City (as it's just as much a late '90s show).

I don't know about Smallville either. It's really not all that revolutionary. Has nothing distinctly '00s about it that you couldn't find in a '90s show.

Maybe 24 belongs on the list. It's an appalling show, but it's very much in line with the '00s post-9/11 trauma theme.

I'd also like to see Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on the list. Again, a terrible show, but it's also very '00s.

This is really hard. Because different genres have different defining TV shows. I for one have managed to live through all of the '00s without as much as watching a single moment of Hannah Montannah.

Heroes should be on the list. After all, superheroes boomed back into popularity during this decade. I don't like it, but i just can't deny its presence.

This is true. Different age groups have different defining shows. Although my 33 year old cousin is addicted to Hannah Montana. I believe she has a wig. (I suppose being childish runs in my family)

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? could be a defining show for older groups. It paved the way for several other prime time game shows.

This decade was all about reality TV.

That and the same old crap.
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.

Other than reality shows, this was a decade of some pretty damn impressive TV shows. In this list I will ignore the former, simply because I don't know much about them. So, the series that defined the 2000s.
Lost - Original, complex, intriguing... Let's face it, Lost spawned, or at least influenced half of the sci-fi shows that came thereafter.
House - This is another thing this decade will be remembered by. It is overrated, but it's still good enough to go down in history and has one of the most original premises of all time.
24 - No need to fool ourselves; as a thriller, this thing probably works better than any show before that. Whenever I see a cliffhanger ending, the first thing I think to myself is: "Where the hell is that beeping clock?"
Prison Break - Probably the most popular show influenced by 24, but also the most overrated one. In a way, Prison Break has defined this decade's lack of the obvious and light entertainment by its mere popularity. Despite that, it was still good to have one of those shows to watch after a long day at work, when the last thing you want is to push your brain into overdrive. It wasn't exactly the best alternative to all that reality crap, but it was still an alternative. Also, it replaced 24's clock with something almost as awesome.
Nip/Tuck - The best portrayal of the flashiness, fanciness and overall in-your-face spirit of the decade. If you're denying this, you didn't watch it.
Desperate Housewives - Yep, nothing like the show every girlfriend you had in the past five years almost forced you to watch. If we were back in the days without the internets, when some of us were killing time with South American telenovelas I may have watched it or even come to appreciate it, but this way it's nothing but a glorified girly show... this decade's very own. If you ever see me watching this thing, it will only be the Eva Longoria scenes, for obvious reasons.
Supernatural - No matter how badly I'd like to deny this, Supernatural does deserve a place on this list. Remember about that flashiness and stuff I talked about earlier? Nip/Tuck portrays it. Supernatural, however, is an example of it... probably the most notable one too. It's a damn shame some people will actually remember this decade's TV by it... Oh well, mentally challenged teenage girls need some entertainment too, right?
Family Guy - Yeah, I know, it started back in 1999, but it didn't have any real impact until much later... when it turned to crap! If this is what these people find funny these days, Idiocracy is not a work of fiction, but a prophecy. Period.
Firefly - Let's give this as the best example of these few space operas, but also the fact that there weren't many of them, as it was canceled way too soon. Right up there with Nowhere Man and Carnivàle.
Mad Men - Yes, some more quality in this decade, but I think its popularity has yet to reach its all-time high, so it will mark the next decade rather than this one. Still, everyone with taste will put it on this list.

If there's anything you think I omitted, just say it and I will explain why it's missing.

Not necessarily a good thing though. Lost has a very annoying format once you see through it. Every episode ends with a cliffhanger or a promise to reveal information about one of the quadrillion arcs. The actual contents of the episodes is really quite uninspiring most of the time, but people keep returning because of those cliffhangers/arc promises.

The thing is, it lacks oversight. The arcs seem to be made up on the fly, and very few of them see any real closure (or it takes the writers 4 seasons to get around to making up an explanation, and I for one don't care any more after that long.)

Some '90s shows such as Babylon 5 deals with multiple arcs in a much more satisfying fashion.

Though I guess this sort of show, that opens with great promises and then just sort of fizzles out is endemic of the '00s. Lost, The 4400, Heroes, etc.

Excellent choice. I was going to mention the very same show.

When defining 00' television with a single show, I'd have to separate my picks into two starkly different categories.

    Reality/Contest: American Idol
    Prime Time Drama: The Sopranos

    I would have to say:
    Spongebob
    Hanah Montana
    Pokemon
    House
    American Idol
Hanah Montana is extremely sad...but I think it defined Disney.
This wasn't that hard, but hard enough since every station would have at least one show.

First of all, I believe you mean the shows inspired by Lost and not Lost itself when you say "uninspiring most of the time" (otherwise, the correct term is "sometimes").
Now, the only way to keep a viewer interested is through mystery, action, tension or comedy. Lost is doing it mostly through its brand of mystery and I don't see why you have a problem with that. Cliffhangers are not as simple as putting an end where the beginning should be (as many other shows do) and I love it.

Well, that's subjective. When 24 first aired here, I watched the first few episodes, didn't think it was anything special and let it go. Much later, when I didn't have anything to watch, a friend gave me the full three seasons, and as it turns out it took me more than 15 episodes to even get to like the show, when most people I know loved it right after the first one.
You may not be fond of Lost's subplots or intrigued by their mysteries, but I just am.
There's also a possibility of hype backslash on your part.

House seems to be a pretty accurate representation of this decade.

Super Ciro. Definitely the most various, and unendingly funny TV show of three years ago.

In England it was mostly reality rubbish like Big Brother and Britains got Talent. For me I'd go for

    QI
Have I got news for you
    Top Gear
    Peep show
    Family Guy
    Doctor Who
    Match of the day
    Robin Hood
    Final Score
    Never mind the Buzzcocks
