That's not what I said though. I meant that the skin itself is a physical barrier for germs. Most infections you get are either through mucus membranes (like in your mouth/throat/whatever), or through wounds. While you can get skin infections, they are pretty rare.

Infections through wounds...While I can understand that, I will bring up the point that such wounds are cutting through tissue and that skin is made of tissue. Wouldn't that therefore mean that because the tissue is infected, the skin will eventually be infected?

All infections are by definition caused by an outside substance. Like bacteria or viruses.

The skin will eventually be infected, but that's because the infection got a foot in the door in the deeper tissues. It's easier to ward off one or a few bacterium than thousands or millions of them. Furthermore, it's likely that the barrier is mostly one-way, that is, skin can fight off attacks from the outside better than from the inside.

Yeah, pretty much. Skin is a very important part of our survival. A good example of this is burn patients. Their skin is no longer a barrier against germs, and as such, the slightest infection may well kill them (which is why hygiene is serious business in burn wards.)
