Godel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter. Any half-decent college-aged geek should have read it. It discusses self-referential paradoxes (like "this statement is false"), recursion, why instructing a computer to think is impossible, and other interesting things. It's a tome, and the text is pretty heavy reading (in no way can you -- or should you -- read it in anything less than 3 months, since you really need to meditate upon what the chapters are saying before you can move on.), but it's really rewarding too.

The Ego and It's Own by Stirner. Individualist anarchist philosophy at it's finest. Stirner is like a less stark raving mad Nietzsche, or a less sociopathic Ayn Rand. It's translated from 19th century German though, so it's not light reading.

Tale of Two Cities. It's a great read if you're into the whole history mixed with fiction thing.

The first looks promising, so I might have to leave my Cave of Solitude and venture to the local bookstore. I trust the internet with many things, but I can't bring myself to buy stuff online.

The second doesn't look too interesting.

I really want to read Angels and Demons, it sounds like it's a good read.

    Man, where to start.

Kevin Phillip's American Theocracy and Ron Paul's The Revolution: A Manifesto are both good reads on American politics. The Federalist Papers should be a required read. The Ayn Rand classics Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead and George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four are all fantastic. For those enamored with modern warfare in all of its glory, I would recommend House to House by SSg David Bellavia for a healthy dose of realism.

Outside of political books, the War of the Spider Queen series is outstanding (written by a variety of authors), and of the same world setting Elaine Cunningham's Starlight & Shadows is likewise well done. Harry Turtledove's Darkness series is fantastic, if highly involved (many characters). The first of Stephen King's Dark Tower series is amazing, but I've fallen out of love with the series after book 3 (just... lost interest). It's been a long time since I've read them, but I recall enjoying Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern. I enjoyed Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials as well. The Well of the Unicorn by Fletcher Pratt was recently recommended to me, but I've not had the chance to order and read it yet.

Past this, I've been writing on and off for about half my young life now, and I always get enjoyment out of going back and rereading old works, editing them, and adding to them every now and again.

I second that. Starts out boring but gets very exciting.

1984 by George Orwell, the Warriors series by Erin Hunter, anything by Ursula Le Guin

As far as manga-turned-novels go, I don't like any of them.

My favorite non-manga books of all time:
The Witching Hour and Lasher by Anne Rice

I WAS a big fan of Stephen King's Dark Tower series until he introduced himself as a character. Talk about an ego trip. I wasn't fond of the deaths in the last book too.

    Kaoru and Kenshin Forever

    *Thinks*
well, I like lots of books. <.<
I mean . . . even ones that are consider for little kids.
    like:
    The Cricket in Times Square
    it actually made me cry.
    Or, my favorite,
    The Shadow Children Series.
Pretty much anything my Margret Peterson Haddix is good

And then there`s the Teen Vampire Books, like:
    Vampire Academy
    Morganville Vampires
    House Of Night
    Trinity Blood (the novels)
    Vampire Kisses (the novels)
(can`t remember true name) and was it . . . The Chronicles Of Vladimir Todd?

Then there`s the .Hack//another birth series,
books by Sharon Creech (too many to name off)
or the one I`m reading that`s really good, Frozen Fire.

Oh, and who can forget the sob stories of girls lives, like ones by Sarah Dessen. The Truth About Forever In Particular

Oh, and a very easy, yet refreshing read, P.S. Longer Letter Later followed by Snail Mail No More by Paula Danziger and Ann M. Martin.

Of course, I could go on for much longer, but my thumbs are starting to hurt. . . (using cell phone)

    Philosophy:
    The Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
The Human Condition by Hannah Arendt
Discipline and Punish by Michel Foucault
A Thousand Plateaus by Gilles Deleuze/Felix Guattari
    Ethics by Spinoza
The Sublime Object of Ideology by Slavoj Zizek

    Novels:
The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Whenever I'm asked to recommend a good book, I answer this. Pretty self-explanatory.

Darkness at Noon by Arthur Koestler
One of the more underappreciated novels in the Orwellian genre, in my opinion. The story is narrarated by Rubashov, an aging revolutionary who is caught and tried by the very Soviet government that he sold his soul to build.

The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad
The Man Who Was Thursday by G.K. Chesterton
The Monk by Matthew Gregory Lewis
    Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon
Koto No Oni by Rampo Edogawa
