Japanese Muggers Confess To Stealing US$30,000 From Otaku

Osaka nerds can breathe easy. Hopefully. Two male suspects have been arrested for "otaku gari", AKA "otaku hunting."
Back in 2006-7, there seemed to be several cases of otaku hunting, but since then, the streets have been relatively safe.
This latest duo targeted their victims in Osaka's Den-Den Town, the gaming/anime/manga/electronics district of the city akin to Tokyo's Akihabara. One of their tactics included dropping their own already broken cell phone and asking for "repair money." Those otaku who didn't have any money to cough up, the suspects tried forcing the victims to take out a loan from a lending company.
The men, aged 20 and 22, have confessed to targeting approximately one hundred "otaku looking" individuals and mugging them to the tune of roughly US$30,000. And now they're arrested.

Blog article from Kotaku and Shin Otaku Gari
    ---------------------------------------------

Yeah, Otakus are not well liked in Japan.

Anime otakus are often seen in a negative light in Japan.

They are often seen as shut-ins and outcast in Japanese society.

Otaku in reality is a negative insult to those obsessed with anime, manga, and collectables.

The Japanese have a major dislike for westerner with this obession.

What do you think of this incident and why?

You think? That's why they're called otaku. It's a derogatory term, at least in its slang usage.

People still carry actual money? Lol.

These people need to learn how to throw their fists around if they're holding that kind of loot. Or at least hide a knife somewhere on their person.

Really, if the reason you want to go to Japan is to live out some deranged anime fantasy then this stark reality should come up and bite you in the rear.

It's true, the Japanese don't care for anime obsessed Americans and they think it's a little strange that this obscure part of Japanese pop culture is so facinating. There will of course be people who react harshly to it, much like you have Americans that still resent Japan for Pearl Harbor and gloat over the fact we bombed Hiroshima. Tastelessness runs on both sides of the Pacific.

Honestly, if there was anyone I would mug (here in Sweden) for the sake of it, it's the beawoos. I just want to kick them in the face when they sit around in groups and mindlessly chant "baka no baka kawaii neko naruto baka onegai!"

Full on dropkick shoe-to-head action is the only thing that will save them from the path of the beawoo, I tells you!

Well, everyone is targeted at some point to be mugged, otakus are no exception. Though, I find it slightly depressing that such mugging was intentional and planned. We haven't hurt anybody yo!

Back, by popular demand! Now with new avy.

Ah, well if anyone would be targeted, it would be otaku. They might be loaded you know, with money for various goods ...

It blows even harder when they speak, write, or type "mock" japanese and don't feel the need to have it make any sense whatsoever -- just by putting various japanese words together that they believe make them sound cool, kind of like "Engrish" (which is amusing, mostly), only I guess ... "Japanrish"?

I've seen it on various fan sites. It's really more annoying and not as amusing as engrish though, at least not in my opinion. It might be slightly amusing to japanese people and people who actually know japanese, though.

You know, maybe the article meant to read Y30,000 then that's only $306.29 at todays exchange.

I'm no ace at speaking Japanese myself, but I've been known to BS better than most people that have had formal teaching. The way some kids butcher the language with ignorance is as intolerable to my ears as it is to theirs or anybody else in an audible distance. They mean to say "kawaii", but drop the A in it to sound more like "kowai" which means scary. To be completely honest, if you can give it at least 30 minutes a day of practice you'd be surprised how well you can pick it up, Japanese isn't all that hard.

I used to talk to one of my friends in "Japanglish", cause she was learning English but wasn't that good so we would flip between both during conversation.

    I disagree on this point.

Japan is a strongly conformist society. There are many proposed reasons for this; traditionally the country (has styled itself; the truth is there is a long history of indiginous people and predominantly Asian immigration that we conviniently choose to ignore) to be monoethnic, it has a pagan religous outlook which places less stress on individuality than Judeo-Christian monotheism, and more importantly, Japan is an island country with a long history of seclusion. It's one of the reasons why we were so susceptible to fascist ideology during the Second World War.

Otaku are reviled in Japan because they do not conform to the norm within their own society. As such, Western otaku, who already come from "outside", though often met with slight condecension or ridicule, are more tolerated; but that is simply because they are not accepted as members of The Society in the first place.

    I love my country.

These are actual Japanese people so they aren't anime fans.

The West is very different from Japan when it comes to society. Here in America, you can wear a shirt with a hole and not care. In Japan people would stand in awe and amazement at the fact of having a hole in your shirt. (This is what my Japanese teacher said)

Honestly, I have no problem with Japanese anime fans, but I cringe when I hear someone say "yes, bcuz im an otaku (that means big lover of anime) ". Otaku is nothing to be proud of, and it doesn't just apply to anime and manga. Someone can be called a culinary otaku, or even a shoe otaku.

I don't think it's amazement so much as it's admiring your particular fashion, but to what degree I'm uncertain. I've been around lots of Japanese here to learn English and they make no fuss over clothing than to say something is nice or looks good on you, seldom have I heard anybody say I look like crap even when I know I did, they just don't say anything at all in those cases.

Am I the only one who got a chuckle out of this? Its embarrassing that these otaku lost their money in such a sad way. They drop their phone, its not your fault, they ask for money, after trying to talk your way out you should

    a. fight
    b. scream/yell
    c. run
    d. a, b, then c

Its too bad there will always be punks that will stoop that low by picking on nerds.

Well everyone has different opinions about fashion style. Also maybe the exchange students you get from Japan are coming from a different area then those of which Kurisu knows of that are coming from another area. Like where I live, a lot of the girls dress preppy and emo, but over where I used to go to school, girls dressed urban and scene.

Back to topic, I feel bad that they were mugged. Recently my sister's friend's house in the neighborhood got robbed. My sister's friend is only 9 years old, and now she has to go to a shrink for awhile for having a gun pressed to her head.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Now I have nothing else to say. However, I feel terrible for that person who was mugged. Otaku, lolita, or ganguro, no one deserves to get mugged. It just angers me when I hear such crime. I'm really tired of hearing all of these otaku muggings.

Well, Dio was there. Not all Japanese are the same either. I wouldn't be surprised if they found the way Dio's classmates dressed was vulgar. I've met many Chinese trasfer students, and they, too, are surprised by our culture. For good reason, though. I'm definitely surprised by certain things the Chinese do/eat/etc. It's what makes our world so rich with culture.

The West is very different from Japan when it comes to society. Here in America, you can wear a shirt with a hole and not care. In Japan people would stand in awe and amazement at the fact of having a hole in your shirt.

Let alone any form of tattoos. Don't even get me started on that one. While I can understand the caution stems from a legitimate source, as a foreinger, I find it a little ridiculous.

Looking at this in as detached and objective a manner as possible, I must say that the muggers made a great choice in targeting otaku. They're generally loaded with hard cash (for reasons that escape me, credit cards never really took hold in Japan) and as cliched as this sounds, most of them are the fittest or toughest folks around.

It's like stealing the wimpy kid's lunch money at school. Only this time, the wimpy kids got like 300 bucks.

This, is the most EPIC Fail thread EVER. Oh man, I wish I can save this! Is there a way to book mark this? Why in the world would you want to steal $30,000 if it has no use in Japan? LOL FAIL. Dude, seriously, nerds these days make me lol.

Plus, to tell you the truth of the obsession of northern stuff is like how we love Japanese Anime, and how we're most obsessed with Japanese influences, its vice versa I'll tell you.

    Currency exchange?
Even his enemies have him as their emergency contact.

But, he is also a fighter, so don't get any ideas

Er. Ever think that it may be because $30,000 is the equivalent to how much yen to guys was carrying? Not everyone knows how to convert yen to USD.

Er no. $30,000 is 2,938,493.65 yen. And that's... well... $30,000. Which is a lot. See the loop?

Where did you do your currency conversion? The one I used yesterday said it was a little over $300. I'm guessing the article was wrong, but then again it's saying this was done over a year and a half time period. But making off with what would exchange out at a little under three million Yen is kind of unfathomable.

I was chatting with my friend from Osaka last night and mentioned this story, at first she thought I was talking about Tokyo which she thought would be more probable but was surprised to hear it happened in her hometown.
