It's because the bacteria was shocked by the dropping object that's why they're too stunned to get on the food yet. Hahahahaha.
Though personally, I'll only do it if it's something I really like.

The five-second rule depends on the following:
1. Where I dropped it - if it's the floor, the table or on myself I shall eat it. If it's the outside ground, the toilet or somewhere else, EWWW (means i'll eat it mwahahaha kiddin)
2. What I'm eating - if it's a fine batch of coconut macaroons, dessert, chicken, cookies or any other favorite morsel, I will gobble it up. If it's liver, well... one has to wonder if I meant it there on the floor. (whoops... lookie that... i accidentally dropped it! Silly me!)
3. People I'm with - If it's just myself, or some people I can relax with (friends or family), I'll chomp on the fallen food. Needless to say, if it's in front of a formal business dinner with the boss and work colleagues, picking up the stray carrot will incur second thoughts. (means I'll wipe it and eat it anyway mwahahahaha)
Bacteria can't count.
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.
Depending on where it is, and what it is, then sure.
If it's a public place, then just flat out no. haha.

I think it depends where the food is dropped. If it is a surface where you can see stuff you normally wouldn't eat, then I would throw it away. If it was a "clean" surface with no visible errors, then OK, I'm headin' to town! Besides, a little bacteria can strengthen the immune system. Helps out the body, ya know?

I used to. But when I saw the scientifically proven Whats Good For You show, not anymore!
I believe in the 3 second rule, and the 5 second rule. I also believe that if you blow on the food it is safe to eat.
I eat food that fell on the ground if the ground is safe and has few bad germs. Preferably the kitchen. If food falls on the ground outside of our/my house we/I let our/my dog eat it.

it depends on wether i like the food or not. and also where i dropped it, i usually only eat it when i dropped it at home D:
but i once had a teacher who ate some vegetables he found on the classroom's ground, and it had been there for some lessons already i think. he was just like " oh..this still looks pretty good." and then he ate it...

it depends on where i dropped the food and if i like the food that much or not..
MOVE ON. DO SOMETHING BETTER.
In Australia we're much more lax so it's the 7 second rule. I've actually always wanted to test this rule but every time I get agar plates I always forget about it and use them for something else.
I'd only eat food I dropped if the food was dry/washable/ or if I had just mopped. Otherwise the cat can have it.

Well, if I can't remember when it got onto the floor, then I generally toss it, assuming something must be wrong with it for the dog to pass it up, but otherwise I just visually inspect the food after I pick it up. If I can see no obvious flaws, then I'll usually eat it.
I've had food on the floor for a few minutes before eating it, but it hasn't made me sick yet.
Like what others have said, it depends on the food itself and whether or not the food is worth it.
I really don't believe in the 5 Second Rule.
If the food was dropped accidentally on the floor/ground outside my house, I wouldn't consider putting it in my mouth. However, I'd pick it up and find a nearby garbage can (hopefully there's one).
As for food that was dropped within my home, I would probably pick it up and give it a wash (if that's possible) before eating it. But if it lands on the carpet, that would be a different story.

i believe in the five-second rule in some cases where the food is solid and falls on the hardwood floor or something like that...
but if it falls like on the grass or earth...i don't think i'll follow the five-second rule..i'll just throw in into the dust-bin..

Once my food falls on the ground it's gone. I'm a germ freak, so the five second rule is a no no, to me.
stuff like chips are fine. But if the food is moist, then i guess not.
It really depends on what the food is, and where that food is dropped as to if I eat that food or not.
Funny how? Funny like a clown? Do I amuse you?
It's not a rule. Rules are pretty much the same as laws, the way I see it anyway. There's no scientific law that states "you have 5 seconds to pick that food up and eat it before bacteria spreads." However, there are certainly variables. If there is moisture on whatever surface the food item lands on, then there is greater potential for millions of bacteria to have gathered. There is no significant difference in how much bacteria spreads onto an item between 2 and 6 seconds of contact. I remember that from watching Myth Busters.

^My piece of mediocrity
I do not trust the five second rule at all. The floor is safe fr your feel to be on but, once food has been there for even one second. Thousands of different types of bacteria have gotten onto it. Most of which is not good for humans to digest. Or even put near their mouth at all.
What I mean is, just don't eat food that has been on the floor and you'll be healthier in the long run.
