i pretty much have simmerised why the UK is united:

The irish hate the english
The scotish hate the english
The Welsh hate the english
The english hate everyone else

A serious answer would be that we are united by the basic rights and liberties we all have as citizens. However, as political ideologies grow farther apart, we don't get along all the time.

The mexicans are trying to take over! I think most of them want to live here and be decent people. So as long as they bring delicious food, I don't mind.

Americans share a common ideal that they sometimes cannot agree on, that brings us together every time. We may seem splintered and full of dissent, but we can come together as one voice and one really big fist when it has to happen.

The US is not really united. Hispanic-Americans are always accused of being illegals, while African-Americans are always though of as being criminals. So it just goes to prove that Americans hate each other.

The only thing united about the United States is their hate for terrorism and their love for beer/marijuana.

We're also great hypocrites. "Bring our boys home, peace in the east!" "TERRORISTS! D8<". America is also obsessed with shirts with words on them, generally using other people's creations to express our individuality, and ritualistically stalking famous people.
In that way, we stand, a country united.

There's a lot of that in Michigan. Obama thinks those of us from rural towns are all bitter and hateful toward others, and cling to our guns, bibles, and racism because our states suck. I'm just bringing this up because Michigan is getting the rawest deal out of all of us with this recession.

He said this on the campaign trail in San Francisco, just for the record.

I'm sad to see such a negative perspective. I've always thought we were pretty accepting of others. I can't measure Texas yet, because I haven't been here that long, but I have yet to see a single rebel flag flying in this town.

A lot of us may be fat or ignorant, but I don't see that kind prejudice in the majority of our population.
