My father is Retired Army, and my brother is a Marine Reservist scheduled to deploy relatively soon (not sure of the exact date, though). I never joined up, simply because I just don't think I've got what it takes to be a soldier. Kudos to you, however.

Four miserable years that taught me immense life lessons, should be a Cpl. but will not get promoted as I am on a medical category, was within 2 months of deploying and finished 6 months of pre-deployment mission training to lose my spot to a reservist toon with no training - fine though because I don't give a damn about Afghanistan, and getting out on a medical release thank allah/jesus/shiva/buddha/krishna/Ra.

    Yup, thats about it.

I am in the US Air Force(E-3). Never really though about getting deployed (since I am in school, so the chances of that happening are low) but wouldn't mind doing it. In fact, I kinda look forward to it.

E-2 Marines, 0311, B-billet 8152. About to hit my year mark and deployment is not likely with the program i'm in, so i'm hating life.

An 0311 who can't deploy? That's... unnatural. "B" billets are CONUS guard duty, right?

Never joined, though I wouldn't be adverse to it. Frankly, another attack on our country would probably do it for me. I'm on the tail end of finishing my bachelor's degree, and I'm still young enough to enlist and get some good years in. I've equal pull for Marines and Army as a rifleman/infantryman (respectively). Anyway, yeah, I've still got a couple years.

That's a definite possibility. My main pull has been law enforcement, but like I said, I'm not far from finding my way to the nearest recruiting station as it is. I've got time.

I honestly could not truly explain to you why i want to deploy. Not in words at least. I guess in as short as pssible you could say that i just have a soldiers spirit. But theres more to it then that.

I have been trying to deploy since i joined. I was told by everyone that i would. Being the timing that i came in i was pretty sure that i would. Now its been 2 years and i have been screwed by everyone around me. My first unit (19th Engineer Bt.) was en-route to deploy after about 10 months, and they had just returned abotu 2 months before. I thought i had it in the bag, then I came down orders to go to a Garrison unit in the same post and the 19th. So to try and save myself i put in volunteer deployment requests. My Commander, 1SG, and CSGM, all had approved them, but my chaplain declined both. So i got stuck going to a garrison unit. Then when i got to the Garrison unit (HHC Garrions HHC stands for Headquarters and Headquarters Command) i put in another volunteer deployment request. Of course my chaplain there said no too. so here i am now.

Listen folks, if your not already in, its never to late to try to get in. The military, especially in this economy, is one of the most stable jobs you can have. Always get paid, youll never get cut, and youll always have a chance to promote. In my personalle opinion, its the best thing any young adult could do, other then college.

I would have to agree. My (non-military) friends always look at me with a slightly confused face whenever I tell them that I want to deploy. I can practically see the ellipses hovering over their heads (probably because they are hearing those words coming out of a girl).

US Army, 19 Delta Cav Scout. I was stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. Never deployed, but served alongside many fantastic gentlemen who did. Joined when I was 17 and I've been out for some years now. It's an honor meeting the rest of you; thanks for your service.

And the other side of things:

In this economy, only those largely without education, smart career choices, or those not willing to adapt or upgrade skillsets are suffering. I know plenty that lost their jobs - they were also regular workers making 30 grand. I know plenty more who are not in any way phased by the economy, because they are highly educated and made smart career moves. I have a friend who is a computer guru/network tech making 65K+ and she isn't hurt at all. Another who is a lawyer who is laughing cause he's getting even more money.

To pursue a job because it is "the most stable" or "secure" means you get complacent, and as the people losing their jobs are finding out (adios, greedy automotive factory workers) complacency kills. The above jobs and people I mentioned aren't secure, but they're top dogs and aren't affected because they are still learning, upgrading, keeping on top of their game instead of sitting back like in the military thinking "oh well at least I'm guaranteed a paycheck mid and end month"

If complacency and a "okay" wage is what you're after, by all means, sign up. Sure you will never know what luxury or being well off is, but you will be making money just to keep your head afloat over water, and at least you won't be drowning, right? Why bother shooting high in life when you can coast right through it and play cards in the bullpen like most of these combat arms types? Who needs thinking anymore? Why shoot for the stars when you can lay down on the ground? Why bother to pursue your own goals and courses and education when you can let someone else decide how and when you will earn your training and courses? (note: most of the time, you won't get what you want, and you can't do jack all about it)

And Broly, what you say about being screwed by almost everyone around? That is the general story from most people in the military.

Yes, this post is coming from someone who is bitter and disillusioned, but if we're gonna sit here and tell people to join the military, we should stop being the used-car salesman type recruiters that got us to enlist to begin with and stop painting the rosy picture for those outside.

They at least they deserve to know both sides. I don't find coincidence in the fact that roughly 85% of the people that I released from the military said they wish they never signed up to begin with - the vast majority of these people being within the early 20 to mid 20 age range.

That's nuts. I've never heard of a Chaplain being able to do that. Did they give a reason why? I'm in a non-deployable strategic intelligence unit and people volunteer to deploy from here all the time.

(note: most of the time, you won't get what you want, and you can't do jack all about it).
Complacency in the military is not either (as if it is okay at all). In fact, it could be one of the first things that someone will look at to see if you can continue in the military or not. It could lead to much worse things than losing your job or having a bad attitude.

There are a lot of things you can do to get far in the military. If a person decides not to take those opportunities, then that is their problem.

I am not going to say that the military is for everybody (I would be the very last person to say such a thing). If a person thinks that they can handle the military life, I won't stop them. But, like you said, a lot of people join for all the wrong reasons.

Right now, yes, I am happy that I have a stable job and a stable paycheck (a lot of people are losing simple things like this). However, that does not mean that is the only reason why I joined the Air Force or the only thing I want to get out of it. I pursued a job in the Air Force for a number of reasons. Having a stable job just happens to be one of the perks of doing so.
    This is my war face.

This is what happens to trolls who mess with me.

OK BOTH SIDES IS RIGHT HERE IN THIS ONE.

I'm an E2 and a Marine, i thought "Marine Infantry = Deployment". But there's a little known program i got suckered into in Boot Camp. It gives me a sky high Clearance and something called a PSB, wiki it, it give me additional training in a place called BSG. This is all skating on the lines of OPSEC, but honestly this is all so far info you can google. NOW the CATCH is that i have to sit in FAIRYLAND Marine Corps standing 12 on 12 off as a security guard. I do this until i get my Clearance, which may or may not come, but if it does i get a huge stepping stone into other careers. I'm hating life but i do not regret enlisting because i DO get paid on the 1st and 15th of EVERY month.

I do recommend enlisting, i don't promise you happiness, i promise you opportunity, it's up to you not to screw up.

I'd never known Chaplains to be able to do that either. Huh.

Wolfgirl, I think Sagat's problem is that people are joining for the wrong reasons. I personally know many who do join because it's a regular paycheck, and when in a number of them have managed to do quite little and remain receiving that regular paycheck. One of the issues Sagat is referring to, intentionally or unintentionally, is that it's these people who tend to stay in longer and in greater numbers than those who join for a cause (probably the best reason to enlist). Because of "up or out", these people who do become complacant gain more and more influence over policy.

Example: AWG (Asymmetric Warfare Group) recently was denied a shipment of over $3 million in lighter, better armor. The armor had already been tested, had already been properly addressed, but all indications are that the reduced coverage spooked someone in a position to put a halt on the shipment of this armor. Result: said armor must undergo yet more testing. The greatest likelihood is that the individuals involved have never served in a combat position, or are worried more about their job(s) than the soldiers' efficiency (or both). Think about how this relates to the issue of complacancy and the motivation for enlisting. (For more entertaining reading on the subject, research into the Dragonskin debacle.)

I strongly support someone joining the military to fight for their country, even if their duties don't involve picking up a rifle (easy, Marines, you know what I mean). However, I also strongly disapprove of those who join the military for those more selfish reasons, because they are those who harm the function of the rest of the military. Complacancy kills, and nowhere is that more evident than in the uniformed services of a nation.

Well, I was also basically saying the treatment sucks in the military - especially army - and if you want courses and training galore like you are led to believe you will get, you're barking up the wrong tree. But yeah that's also the general idea I was getting at.

Absoltivalutely. You hit on a big reason why the management and policy is not what it ought to be.

My father was in the U.S. army and my grandfather was in the Marines.

I don't know much about it but I plan to join the Air Force.
On this day of days, most epic and prideful, you were born 15 whole American years ago!
Through the odds and by doing the impossible, you beat out hundreds of thousands of siblings in the great sperm race for the coveted egg.
    Probably via hax.
    Regardless! You won!
So remember, whenever someone picks on you or calls you weak or small.
Just remind them that you beat out a few hundred thousand other wimps.

And the grand prize was not dying!
