Post How is a Gundam pilot

I am big reader of MechWarrior and understand the mechs are piloted throw a neurohelmet. With neurosensors built into it, which then fed a sense of balance to the Mech from brainwaves to control it.

But how is it do for the Gundam Pilot?.

    Early UC (0079-0083ish):

Zeon Side: MS Research started on Zeon Side (originally simply in the space colonies, so when the war came out Zeon conveniently already had the technology at hand), they developed the MS based on the fruits of MS developement regarding balance. It took a long way for that.

Here you see the researchers finally succeeding the balance adjustments to let an MS walk bipedal on flat terrain under influence of gravity.

Unfortunately, they involved the Shinji Ikari in controlling the thing (just kidding)

As result, basic actions that were yet too complex to controll 100% manually (walking, running, holding the gun and pulling the trigger etc.) are automated while more delicate movements (strategic handsigns, micromanagement in aiming, melee combat) needed specific training of the pilot. As result, the quality of the pilot had great impact on what the MS could do:

-Zeon late-war underage fodder reservist: Walk/run (forward only), stopping and shooting, as well as a peek in "how2aim4dummies". Incapable of shooting sideways or using thrusters properly. Squished like ants in combat, might even trip over something.
-Frederic, Bernhard (newbies): Basic maneuvering, use of thrusters aiming and melee. Dropped like flies. The 2 mentioned pilotes were exceptionally lucky or determined at times allowing them to exceed expectations of this pilot class.
-Denim, Acous, Cozun (Regular Pilot): Able to pull off handsigns while running and looking in another direction as well as some fancier melee moves such as kicking and tossing a cracker grenade accurately, dodges with single thrusts mostly (but sometimes even capable of aiming during that), but some are likely to live through as veterans. High Mortality Rate, though some individuals survive and learn and become Veterans while some geniuses become aces.
-Schmitzer, Gadem, Mikhail (Veteran Pilot): Basically the above, but after experience piled up they are faster, more accurate and sometimes developed own ways of survival or accomodation to surroundings (Bitter's African unit survivers can skid down sand dunes while maintaining cover fire). Often praised as ace or in special commandos and capable of using thrusters for peak maneuvers and sharp turns to minimize chance of getting hit.
-Johnny, Auggs (Ace): Exceptionally talented individuals. Some Zeon aces are "fabricated" for propaganda, actual aces show their ability on the battlefield (Auggs economically destroys 1 MS per fired bullet, has most acknowledged kills overall in the OYW, while secretly crediting some to his wingmen).
-Char Aznable (Ace Beyond Aces): Not only talented or genius, but also piled up on experience and with the Charisma to lead a Nation. Someone at this level can actually percieve and purposely dodge a bullet or beam shot.

Federation Side: Feddies developed their MS technology by salvaging Zeon units and applying what they could find with lots of high-end technology into one overteched unit, the Gundam. Based on what the gundam collects on data, they were able to adapt what is necessary for more MS, further MS production and research based on this pattern: "Built a prototype, send it into battle, if it gets back in any amount of pieces analyse the data". Mortality rate of these test teams were high (over 55% annihilated in one day recorded on Marmot Squad). The Federation has developed simulators to train rookies, unlike the Zeon.

-Jose (Before GMs existed): Can move and aim somewhat, most knowledge adapted from the simulator of fighter jets.
-Fresh from the Simulator: Capable of basic operations similiar to Zeon regulars, but far less to not at all experienced in the actual thing. As result, these pilotes might *know* of most functions and how-tos, but end up panicking or fumbling a lot or overwhelmed by the situation.
-Karcs, Feuris (Regular): Have practiced on the actual thing in an MS or a GM Trainer, but not experienced enough in an actual battle. These pilots often know some technical details of their units and can do basic emergency repairs if given the time to do so (Federation units are less responsive and more likely of jamming according to Sid Amber, Chuck Keith and various other feddies who were in Zeon units as they are rushed in production, Zeon-made units are like porsches among cars, federation ones are FIAT). Higher mortality rate than a Zeon regular, but the population of Earth makes up for it.
-Kou, Christina (Test Pilot/elite absolvent): Talented individuals given further lessons in functions of their units, mainly in order for them to test the strain and performance of their units in battle. They are often capable of recalibrating mechanisms when needed (Shirou, though not a test pilot but skilled nonetheless can recalibrate the Beam Sabre of his Gundam, he used that to create an onsen in the snow). As talented people are preferred and put under more extremes, these pilots turn out as aces more often than in the regular divisions, though mortality rate is high as they lack actual combat experience at the beginning.
-Lydo (Transferred Ace): As the name mentions, they are aces, but not in MS piloting. They were exceptional fighter pilotes before MS were introduced to the feddies and transfered into MS platoons during a pilot shortage. as such, they are highly skilled in thrusting maneuvers and aiming, but less so in melee. As they are talented beforehand, some easily adapt to MS combat.
-Burning, Monsha, Terry (Veteran): A Federation Regular that has piled up on experience, similiar to the Zeon Counterpart.
-Tenneth, Kajima (Ace): Most likely but not necessarily a test pilot who has piled on experience, like their Zeon Counterpart, they are unmatched in battle by anything but veterans and other aces.
-Late 0079 Amuro (Ace Beyond Aces): Newtype, Talent and Exceptional Learning all in one. To demonstrate the difference, his (0079) dodging patterns have been intigrated as automated movement in units of a Federation Platoon, the pilots complained that they can barely manage to keep control due to pressure of G-Forces, heavy turbulences and sharp turns, but had a 1 to 3 casualty rate advantage against the enemy for the first half of the battle, until the Zeon side found out it was an automated, repetitive and very crude copy of Amuro's maneuver rather than actual pilot skill and made use of that fact. The idea got abolished, but a more sophisticated system, the A.R. (Amuro Ray) Chip was developed decades later. This all is added with "Piled up Experience" in his CCA appearance, something Kamille and Judau (both with supposedly more potential) unfortunately didn't get to have. Furthermore, he was capable of a dual-wield with beam sabres despite the primitive control mechanisms. Its hard enough to dual wield as person.

FC (G Gundam): Motion Capturing via Mobile Trace system, pilot's movements = Gundam's movements. In fact, the pilots even give the spiritual power for their special attacks, the Gundam is just there to make it "Gundam Fight". Thats why Domon can toss scyscrapers around even without the Gundam. Technical details are highly obscure, especially in how the heck they move at such speeds and do special moves.

    AC (Gundam Wing):

Same as UC Zeon with the difference of Minovsky interference, which does not exist for the AC Universe. Therefore, aiming is much easier as radar guidance actually works. But Gundanium isn't detectable by rader and unlike UC pilots who rely on skill and hand-eye-coordination from the start, OZ/Earth Union pilots generally fail at aiming against Gundams and can be replaced by AIs with aimbots (Mobile Dolls). Like G Gundam, further technical details are obscure, though the Gundams don't fire off Kamehamehas.

    CE (Gundam SEED):

Very Similiar to UC, the Cancellers give a minor "Minovsky interference"-ish environment. Units are still more automated and controlled in a more digital fashion, allowing a person with high technological understanding and lightspeed typing (Kira) to program in complex movements into the OS (as seen on the Strike Gundam). It also has the existance of Aim supporting functions and DRAGOONs (the movement patterns are mostly automated and in set patterns, DRAGOONs will generally beam-spam an area in concert with other DRAGOONs), especially modified humans such as Coordinators, "Spatial Awareness" bearers and Extended pilotes (Human CPUs, capable of calculating with the speed of a computer with help of drugs) can push the units to their limits.

    Late UC Newtype specific (CCA-ish):

360 degree panoramic cockpits with linear seats (general equipment, not NT specific) allow full view of the surroundings (though an NT can feel his/her surroundings beyond visual to an extent, the cockpit is a great improvement for non-NTs who don't, but there was no reason not giving an NT one), the Newtype pilote using a Psycho Frame has most functions and general directions recallable from an orb on the seat as well as a panel. HUD displays hover around when needed. Delicate Functions are linked to the Psychoframe, the pilot's brainwaves deal with the micromanaging allowing the unit to nearly (and in Gundam unicorn fully) act like the own body. Basically a very costly transfer of the psycommu system to the Gundam itself (Funnels, unlike DRAGOONs, underly direct mind control of the Newtype pilot and are capable of complex maneuvers. This allows exceptional NTs to have each funnel about as effective in a dogfight as the main unit with a beam gun, letting each dodge and fight individually as far as their mind can keep up with it).

On a side note, Units often have specifications of being used in space, on ground or underwater. While some units are made able to maneuver fairly good in any of these terrains with minor adjustments, units that are specific for one terrain fairs poorly on the other, even if it can "survive" there. Example:

-F-Type Zaku II (space use) on Earth (MS IgLoo 2, 1st episode): can barely make use of their thrusters as those are meant for Zero-Gravity and are much too weak, they end up forced to walk and run, allowing tanks and infantrymen to put up somewhat a fight.
-GP01 Zephyrantes in Space: Sucked. Kou could pretty much only float around a bit and shoot, sophisticated maneuvers out of question. It was rebuilt to Full Vernier later for further use in space.
-J-Type Zaku II (ground Use) in Space (MS IgLoo 1, Zudah Episode): Thrusters are meant for gravity, thrusts have nothing to counteract the lack of any air resistance or gravity in space, causing floating Zakus to spin uncontrollably once they've attempted a directional change with thrusters.
-GP03 Dendrobium Orchis on Earth: Would drop onto the floor and remain there, forcing the Stamen to eject. Unless you are playing SRW and add a Minovsky Drive XD

You sir, are off topic. But since we're at pointless pilot cheerings...
