I was listening to the radio today and the discussion was about public language. Now, I live in a small town- we thrive on manners and appearances but I was wondering, does anyone else ever have problems with people using obsene language in public? Does is bother anyone else? Or are you just desensitized to it?

I couldn't care less about what words you are using. I am not desensitized to it because I was never sensitive to it. The whole idea that language can be foul is ridiculous, and is in the end rooted in magical thinking.

People should worry about what people are saying, and not how they are saying it.

I have as much manners as the person that talks to me, but most of the fokes with manners cant get past how I look, which is why I am having such a problem with getting a job no matter how nice I am or how many manners I have.

I try to always be mindful of my audience, but other people's language itself doesn't bother me so much as the concepts they are trying to communicate. The whole Attractive and Successful African American v. [Less Pejorative form of Attractive and Successful African American] thing seems like a good example of this concept in practice. No amount of F-Bombs alone is going to phase me, you need context to be offensive.

In my opinion, it's more about the context and the intention of the words then the words themselves. Words and language are simply the means by which to communicate thoughts and intentions - so it seems to me that the thoughts and intentions are the important things.

When I was a freshman, I was really shocked by all the profane language everyone used in high school. But now that I'm a senior, I'm pretty desensitized.

I still hold to my own though. I never say bad words... only sometimes, to make a point I guess.

See, I don't care what they say, it's how they say it. My friends have said "go f*** yourself", and things of that relation, to me and others numerous times. But if they say it laughing, as they often do, I have no problem with it. It's when someone says something to intentionally upset me, that's when I get pissed, and that's not good an way you look at it.

I feel that obscene language is totally and completely inappropriate in most situations. In my opinion constant use of obscene language indicates a basic lack of knowledge of language, and an inability to expess oneself. In other words it makes a person look ignorant.

Dude, tell me about it. But then like Mr. Fist said - its not the implications of the word that annoy me. Its like, when, like any like word is like repeated, like 50 times in each like sentence *at this point, judicious application of a dagger starts to look tempting*. Like is just another exanmple.

Yeah... to me, a person using profanity basically shows that they lack intelligence. It's like... they don't have a big enough vocabulary to express what they want to say, so they fill those spaces with obscene language.

I don't mind hearing curse words. I honestly do not care if someone uses them in public or not. I see and hear worst things on the streets than curse words (they are the least of my concern). However, I know when it is not appropriate to use words like that (being in the military that would be...well...anytime I am in uniform...or when my commander is looking). Using them in a professional environment (as some people have said) makes a person look as if they have a poor vocabulary and/or ignorant.

Well, I don't approve on profane language, I barely cuss, only when I am mad though, just don't randomly say it that's stupid, that goes with racial slurs, dear god I hate racial slurs so much literally grow up.

Same here, only I was shocked in elementary school and was desensitized by the next grade up. I try not to cuss. Sometimes bad words break through, but mostly only when I'm frustrated or upset.

I wouldn't say which country, but in my experience, people lived in the north part of that country tends to use foul languages in every sentences.

My boyfriend's mother is from the north of that country, but his mother then lived at the south along with my boyfriend for more than ten years, and that city at the south is one of the most popular traveling points, and people there are the nicest in the whole country. His mother acts very polite in that south city, but once she goes back to her north hometown, her foul language just totally exploded out, even the manners just even pissed me off that I wanted to cuss at her. And her friends in that north city were all rude like they don't even realize it cos they aren't educated. The north tends to be rural and poor compare to the south (emphasized in geography studies by experts). The people there are used to how other people talk, it's like, every sentences they says hurts peoples' feelings. For example, one time my boyfriend introduced me to those friends of her mother's that I just graduated from High school and ready to start college (which is something people can't wish for in that country), then they start talking trash in front of me "YOU go to COLLEGE?! How useless?! Be as stupid as you can" Then my boyfriend's mom asked me what I want to major in, then I told her that I want to major art. A bomb came out of her mouth "You don't know anything about art! So give up!" I got so mad and told her that I really don't know art, that's why I want to take lessons on art. My boyfriend noticed that I was getting frustrated, so he told me that people up there DO talk like that, and they think it is normal. But to me, it is extremely rude and deserved a beat up if they are here in America. They actually included lots of swearing.

Foul languages is like their culture, but to me, it's a shame.

I do find it vulgar when a woman walks out of the bank screaming swears at the top of her lungs in a busy parking lot. I also think people should hold their tongue in places where children are present, like Disney land for example.

However everyone I know swears as their daily normal vocabulary. With video games and movies and parents among other things using them around us, it's pretty much normal.

I started watching R rated movies when I was 5, possibly younger, with killing and gore and swearing, and it never had an effect on me. Actually, I never even started fully swearing until I was 16 or 17.

Though half the time when I hear people swear, it's only when they're arguing.

If you swear in an argument, get this.

People only swear when they lack the proper vocabulary to come up with a more intelligent sounding word.

Actually, the people swearing were women and they were in Chucky Cheeses. They beat up the manager when he asked them to watch their language and then ran when the cops came.

Yes, I can understand swearing if you're with a mature audience when your angry or something, but to do it in front of kids or in a resturant or just in general public I think is stupid, rude, inconsiderate and completely uneccessary.

People in Japan don't swear so much as intentionally rape the language. There are not so much crude words, but more a crude mode of speech. Personally I find it unpleasant to the ears and besides, it makes the speaker sound like a lesser form of ape. At least English speakers are creative with their profanity.

I dont really care. maybe if there where kids around i wouldnt curse, but i dont really curse anyways. besides bad words are are only bad if people think they are. like the "F" word, why is it a bad word? i never understood it. where did it come from?
