This is the short story I had written for English. I am posting it on here to get other comments from people.
Deadly screams and screeches can be heard from a great distance or so I think they could be heard. There screams are a sign of absolute agony, one that no one wants to hear. The Failed and the Created we are called, no names or face could identify us. Were kept in cages, ones fit for animals or for those who behave like beasts, craving for freedom. Spasms of light can be seen from my cage bars and another one of the Failed is brought within the dark room, contorted to fit his genetic change. The Changers as they are called are those who have tampered with our DNA to form us into superior beings. They wear white coats, masks and wear gloves that smell of terrible plastic. The being that was now changed and contorted, lay before me, reaching its hand towards me.
“Help me…” It whispered in a raspy voice, one that could not be identified by anyone. How could I feel sympathy towards this creature? I was one of them as well, with less or fewer body changes then him. I had previously had beautiful grey blue eyes but they changed to a deep violet due to the injected drugs I was given. My blond curls were slowly transforming into burgundy waves and my body became much more slender compared to the muscle I had had before. This creature was a boy, who once had chocolate curls that were combined with golden yellow eyes. Such an odd but beautiful combination to have as genetic make up. This boy was transformed into a creature with blue scales with reptilian eyes. He was no longer identifiable by the likes of me and by the likes of anyone else. His hand clenched into a fist as he breathed his last breath and soon, his whole body went limp.
“Looks like we got a dead one. Bring out the squad to clean this mess up.” A Changer had spoken in another disappointed voice. Death was a normal occurrence for me, there was not a day in my life that I have seen one or more then one dead body pass my cage. Except this boy, he became my friend since his cage was across from mine. I watched the squad as they placed his body within a bag and clean the trolley that had gooey remnants of his remains. It seemed like a defensive mechanism from the DNA he was combined with. Tears began to well up within my eyes, leaving small streams down my cheeks. I always wondered why I was placed in such a dreaded place, how a mere coincidence could have placed me here. One event in my life had placed me here, the day my biological parents discovered I had psychic abilities.
It was most likely to this day, ten years ago. I was sitting in the living room, playing with toys like a normal 5 year old would. My parents were rather busy people, my father was a business men and my mother was an attorney. Well, I was five years old, how should I have known this? Well, I began to hear random thoughts in my mind as soon as I turned five. That day, my parents were preparing for work when I was playing joyfully with my toys. One of my older siblings, his name was Jessie, was sitting in front of the television while eating breakfast. The other, named Mia was in the bathroom, fixing her hair to impress some boys at school. All of a sudden, my parents began to raise there voices and then, things began to float and circulate around the room. My brother, only being 7, was so amazed by this and continued to watch T.V. as he acknowledged the flying objects. However, my sister screamed as one object had nearly hit her in the head then my parents rushed into the room. Books, papers, remotes and even my brother were floating around the room.
“This is fun! Woooo!” My brother had exclaimed in pure joy. Mother and father only seen me as a monster and grabbed my brother and kept him close to there side like a mother would with there new born. My trance was disrupted when I had seen what kind of expression they had each upon there faces. My father ran to find the phone on the floor and called the operator. I was five and rather naïve towards the consequence of my abilities. In only a matter of seconds, men in formal suites came into our house and picked me up from the floor. One had approached my father and given him an envelope. His grip was firm and spoke in a husky voice.
“There’s your money. Thank you for your patronage.” My parents did not fight to keep me, they sold me for money. As I left, they watched as I was placed within a dark Cobalt Chevrolet and lead away to a mysterious place. The only thing I could think of was how much I hated them. Selfish and ignorant they were, they only cared about money and not the feelings of there own flesh and blood.
They educated me throughout the years I have been here but I have been too clever for the tests and teachings they have provided for me to learn. At that moment, they decided for me to take various tests to experiment with my abilities and my intelligence. I have surpassed every test but this only lead to further, more cruel testing. They had a crazy idea, to combine my DNA with an element, wind. One day, they placed me within a huge cage, one far larger then the one I lived in and was sealed like concrete. No air could come in or escape this contraption. Changers ensured that I would not cause a riot and so, they gave me some anaesthetic and placed me within my cage and awaited my awakening.
Hours passed and I woke to see glass walls and a type of cork as the ceiling as I lay on the floor. Minor scratches on the glass were apparent due to previous experiments within these walls. Changers were at every console, monitoring my life lines and the glass case itself. Only when I stood up from the glass floor had I noticed that I had a puncture wound on my right arm, they had injected me with another sort of drug besides the anaesthetic. A slight static sound came from the speaker that was encased in glass within the cage and it soon spoke in a beautiful euphoric voice.
“Wind exposure to experimental drug test one.” It was the voice of a woman who must have had some singing lessons of some sort; it was the most beautiful voice I have heard in this dreaded place. Small wind currents began to flow into the cage as I braced myself against the floor in the cage. Pieces of my hair flew everywhere as the currents got stronger then a shot of pain of surged through my body. Then, a surge of pain had spiked throughout my body. I had super sensitive vision and had noticed that multiple surface cuts were done purposefully for the wind to be absorbed into my muscles and veins. One of the monitors outside of the cage had begun to beep into a sort of danger mode. Many Changers began to crowd around the monitor, all stared at this monitor in amazement then the strong currents suddenly ceased. The Changers awaited a response from my limp body within the case. I slowly stood up and looked at them, in clear, instantaneous anger. One of the Changers came towards the top of the glass cage and opened the cork ceiling to allow me to leave. The air within the case allowed me to fly out of the cage without ease. I gracefully landed right near the Changer who was suppose to allow me out of the cage manually. All Changers braced themselves for an upcoming attack when all of a sudden, the leader of this project appeared at the door.
“We must show her to the world. She only deserves that much.” My anger was soothed by this strange voice. It was that same euphoric voice that entranced me when I was within the case. The woman who had this beautiful voice, had her hair pinned into a bun of messy blond waves. Her eyes were a lovely sapphire and that were complimented with her glorious long eye lashes. She stood near the door of what appeared to be a lab which was poorly lit. One Changer escorted me towards this being of such beauty and I stood beside her, standing about two inches shorter then she had. Her smile seemed so gentle yet, she was the mortified being who used us simpletons as an experiment.
“Are you ready for your encounter, Leerya?” My alertness was prompted by her serene voice and to the fact she had known my name. I gave her one glance and looked ahead to the brilliant light that was suppressing my vision.
“There waiting…” I didn’t quite understand what she had meant by “there waiting” but she had urged me to walk first and once I went into the light, it had dissipated to show, a world with a blue sea for a sky which was never-ending. The audience that attended the conference remained silent as I walked onto the stage and close to the unknown woman. She approached the alter and repaired any wrinkles and lose hair that might of come out during the lab encounter.
“My citizens, our long awaited success had finally come!” The many citizens within the crowd had cheered happily to know that, I, “the success”, was complete and fully functional. This angered me so to know that I was nothing more then some experiment when I was no different then anyone else besides having a few extra abilities. The lady gestured her hand towards the alter, to allow me to speak or say something.
“Would you like to say something Leerya?” She whispered to me as I approached the alter to hear her. I nodded silently and stood in front of the alter, shy struck but I was still capable of managing some words.
“Hello citizens, I am Leerya. I have been an experiment within these walls for a decade. The things the people have done behind these walls are inhumane and tragic. I believe every place in the world that is set to genetically change beings to create a superior race or to just see how we could live with these changes, is unforgivable. I will personally see to it that each and every place like this one, is destroyed!” The lady merely stood aside and nodded agreeably towards my response. Men in formal suites came to the front and arrested the women and placed handcuffs on her wrists. One man, much taller then I, about 6 feet tall, approached me.
“Leerya, I must gravely apologize for the way you have been treated. You are a well gifted child and were suppose to be placed within a famous facility, rich with psychic abilities. However, one of our agents had gotten attacked and you were abducted from our hands. Curiosity can get the best of people Leerya.” His eyes were hidden behind black sunglasses and an ear piece was attached into his ear, barely visible by his burgundy coloured hair. I watched as this insane women was escorted to a SWAT truck, fully equipped with bars and a jacket to match that pretty attire of hers. Her gaze was concentrated upon me, her only surviving experiment and her only success in her life. The man escorted me towards a limo as I watched the women being placed within the truck and driven away. As I sat on a leather seat within the limo, another man, much older then the one who had escorted, had greeted me.
“Hello young one. I am grateful to you. We have been searching for that mad women ever since she escaped our grasps at London. She has been hiding in that lab, performing tests on various subjects and for you to be the only survivor, is quite the feat.” He was sitting and his legs were bent and were quite high in contrast to his chest. From where I sat, his knees reached at least mid torso. His hair was beginning to gray from age but his eyes were a gorgeous ice blue colour. My mind was trailing towards all the memories I have had in that lab and then, everything came to a halt.
“Where do I go from here Sir? I have no relatives to go to.” The older man smiled and turned on the T.V. It showed multiple news reports about my speech and the women being taken away. My speech and story was being announced all over the world.
“Leerya, you are seen as a hero to those who have passed and for those who have been searching for that women. Your famous.” I was unaware of the impact my speech would have upon the matter of the experiments, the women and how globally it had become. The same man who had escorted me from before, sat within the car, next to me. We drove away, towards a new beginning to the life of Leerya.
Years have passed and my life is now filled with different luxuries. I live with the man who had escorted me to the limo and I have formally known him as Ty. He had provided me with a home, an advanced education and a larger life then I could have imagined. The women who had experimented with my genes, was executed by lethal injection. It was quite inhumane due to the fact that it was broadcasted but she was a globally known criminal. The days following her execution, I was interviewed by the news, talk shows and by the media. My reputation as an experiment became global and soon, I was a legendary hero.
