I actually didn't hear about this until I was at school. Some people were shocked, while others didn't mind. I have to say that the most irritating comment I heard was from someone in the hall that said "What kind of example is he setting for children." I hardly know any children that even know who he is, so why should that matter? Kids are more interested in toys and video games than some swimmer.

Not that care (I honestly think that a 23 year old man who has just won 8 Olympic gold medals should be free to do whatever the hell he wants), but this is "bad" because Phelps is a role-model (and he knows it) and should present himself as such. He knows that after winning 8 Olympic gold medals, the world has basically got their eye on him. He has endorsement deals coming out of his butt (he is getting hundreds of millions of dollars for swimming and standing around), so this little stunt was a terrible move on his part.

Plus, he already got in trouble a couple of years ago for a DUI. He was super embarrassed and said that he would not do anything like this again. Well, something like this DID happen again and I think that is why this is big "news".

When we say kids, let's just think 18 and under. Think of all the pot-heads that are going to say, "Phelps smoked a bowl pot--a little hungry is all he got." You don't want your role models pulling crap like this. As a sponsor, you don't want to invest millions of dollars into someone's reputation when they go and ruin it by smoking pot.
Even if pot were legalized, it still would be like cigarettes in that society would try to get rid of it.

I personally could care less. I think people make too big a deal about athletes and celebrities doing drugs and such because it poses as a "bad influence for children" or something of the sort. So Michael Phelps was caught smoking pot? It doesn't faze me in the slightest.
