    Default Immortality?

It always was a intriguing question for me.

What would you choose, mortality or immortality?

For me, immortality. It is sad to watch those you love wither and die like a flower, but to live and meet new people everyday is also a gift. My reason is to seek what I want most.
    Choosing a path...

...is much harder than you think.

Life would be meaningless without death. That's why I would choose to be mortal. But I would be able to remain immortal in my own way. My achievements would make me immortal in a symbolic sort of way. After all, people who write books and other things are also immortalized through their work.

I would love to live forever because then it makes me closer to being a VAMPIRE (I already have natural pointy teeth and I love the taste of blood so all that's left is the immortality!!!)

    Living forever?
you will continue to grow old until u cannot move at all. you will be and pain your whole imortal life.you will soon start to loose feeling in your body and loose your humanity and turn into a pile of meat that lives for ever that is meaningless.the sun will eventaully run out of helium and explode and you wont die and youll float in space for the rest of eternity untill theres another big bang or something.

    i choose to be mortal

Copypasta from the last identical thread:

You can end up in some pretty nasty situations when you're immortal:
    • Say you fall into a well in the middle of the forest. You're left standing there with nothing meaningful to do for decades until some hiker finds you.
    • What happens when humanity eventually dies? Say an asteroid hits the planet and eliminates all life as we know it. Now what? You're immortal, so you can't kill yourself. Sure, you have the whole world to yourself, but it's all rubble.
    • What will you do after the sun has gone out, and you're alone in the dark?
    • What will you do after all suns have gone out, and all matter has evaporated into neutrinos and photons, and you're alone in the universe? THEN WHAT? I mean, you think you know what the words hungry, alone and bored means, but you have nothing on the man who is left floating in empty space as the only chunk of matter in existence.

But don't get me wrong, old transhumanist as I am, I'm all for efforts to enhance the human lifespan (like SENS.)

I think living as long as you want is better than living forever (forever is a VERY long time). If I have the option to die when I want to (say if I was trapped in a well), then I'm all for it.

People go through enough pain as it is on a daily basis. By gaining immortality, they will have to face hardships for the rest of their lives.

    Remember...Power comes with a price.

If we die, we do not have to endure anymore pain.

Life and Death is a never-ending cycle with pain in between each phase.

Example: A woman gives birth to a child. She is giving life and facing pain from squeezing the damn child out. Now say that the same woman dies after giving birth. The family with suffer great pain due to her death. There would be even more pain if she had a miscarriage as well.

The way I see it, the life and death cycle is of this fashion for the time being:

    1. Life
    2. Pain
    3. Death
    4. Pain
    5. Repeat

I feel sorry for your Lord of the Rant - seeing life as a constant cycling of pain is such a sad way to view the world. Do not forget that there is also pleasure and happyness in the world though I would say that often one has to work to be happy, whlist one can get pain and sadness with little to no effort.

As for myself it would depend on the kind of immortatily - simply never dieing sounds like hell, your body and mind lost, yet you lacking the ability to end. However if we are talking about eternal life coupled with youth (say early 20s) then I am all for a longer life and avoiding death -- though Eris raises the important longer term view of being trapped eternally as well through eternal life. Its not even taking into account being caught and studied by man ( and other creatures) because we are not dead!
Still I would like a longer life with more youth

    I appreciate the sympathy...

Everywhere a person heads, pain is already there, maybe not happening to them but it's there. These pleasures and bits of happiness are only temporary, I think. Once some form of pleasure loses it's impact, people seek more of the same type. It's like amphetamines...once you lose the impact from a specific dose, you have to step it up to receive that impact again.

Sad, yes...but I'm trying to see things from this view to get a better experience in life. I tried it with happiness already and found out that you really can't be happy at a funeral. I almost got shunned and scorned by my family for smiling during my gramps' death.

Life is not one of the extremes of human view points - it is neither filled with joy nor is it filled with pain -- nor is it filled with equal portions of either.
Sometimes one is or has to be sad whilst other times joyfull - as in the case you explain above there are cultures where death is celebrated and viewed differently, of course people are sad that ones they have loved are gone, but they console themselves (often through belife) that their loved ones are in a better place and take joy in that and also in remembering good times. Such is not the dominant "western" viewpoint, which is much more somber. Respect is shown to the death through a serious and somber service and time spent remembering in private (of ones thoughts).
Smiling is seen as mockery and thus you were scorned - for you were not seen to be showing respect but mocking the service and the death at hand -- most likley.

Also don't try to see the world from the viewpoint that all is sad or all is happy - instead view the world as it is and focus on one or the other - I would caution though that those that focus on the sad tend to lead down a life of self destruction which leads to futher sadness - a vicious cycle -- focus on the good and happy times and memories

    Caleb kills God
    Caleb dies.
    Caleb revives himself.
    Caleb kills again.
Caleb[before final kill]: "Let's boogie, Boogie Man!"
Caleb[after kill]: "Life's not fair, but neither is death. Get over it!"
    Caleb becomes God.

I'd have to say I'd prefer mortality. I would run out of things to do and get bored. Plus I'd rather live a normal life that has an end then be ostracized by people because I don't age. In life there was never meant to be constants.

Immortality is impossible. I will die hopefully by being hit by a car, & immortality will not help me there.

Uh, if you are immortal, being run over by a car will hurt a lot, but will not kill you.

But there's no such thing, therefore I will die. You're Eris show me a chart shows immortality is possible.

When being hit by a car you most likely die from head trauma & there's no way to prevent that.

It seems unlikely, but it is not impossible unless it can be shown that it actually is impossible. Not finding evidence that it is possible is not evidence against the possibility. Furthermore, it is a theoretical question, matters of possibility are utterly irrelevant.

I don't think I want to stay around while I watch everybody I love wither and die. Then after they're all dead I get to meet a bunch of new people who all wither and die while I hang around. It would be like being on a cursed merry go round. I think I'll just bite it when my number comes up.

I have thought of such things as antibodies that can attack all diseases or steel bones that won't break, and I assume that old age doesn't apply to immortality.

Old age looks like one of the few things we will actually be able to repair in the future. The meaning of immortality is that you can not die. An immortal person could drink hydrochloric acid while swimming in molten plutonium and survive. He might take damage, but it must not be lethal.Conversely an invulnerable does not take damage, but may die of old age.

I would actually be interested to know more about this. I'm assuming is has something to do with telomerase.

And I think that immortality does imply invulnerability. Because if you were vulnerable to lets say lava, your body will melt because it's vulnerable to the heat. If your body is gone, how could that still be considered immortality? You can't be immortal without a body. Therefore, if your immortal, you have to be invulnerable to anything.

Immortality: if I can be an omnipotent god at the same time.
    Mortality: but die young.

What can I say? I'm a selfish creature.
