Okay so since at least one person is at least mildly interested in the way I do stuff, I decided to upload an old cloud tutorial by me and do a rough write-up on a series of progress images from my last ARIA wallpaper which used a similar technique for the clouds.
- These clouds do not obey any laws of perspective and need a completely different approach if you want to make them more realistic or have more depth.
- I use a brush with constant size (I vary it manually) and pressure+flow varied by pen pressure. Opacity is set to 100%, flow to ~8-30%, depending on mood.
1. Pick two colors, one for highlights and the other for the shadows - in my case a very whitish-blue and a darker, saturated blue.
2. Start off painting by blocking in some shapes for the cloud base and add very rough, round highlights with a pretty big brush. Then define the shape by blending the highlights in (pretty roughly, as you can see in the first screencap)
3. Add even more highlight bits
4. Blend them in some more
5. Continue blending and shaping the clouds. Add even more highlights, but paint them in semi-elliptical arcs with a small brush, not big round strokes. Also, do not blend the small details too much, you must keep quite a lot of detail with hard edges.
6. Eventually you should stop and be happy with what you got, just do that sooner than I did or you'll have a huge storm coming in your scene <_<
