It was tested successfully on September 10th, and then due to some technical malfuntions (two offset magnets, and a helium leak), it's operation had to be stopped, and it will apparently be working again until next summer.

Why would you not turn on a 6 billion/million machine on?
I never turned on my DS either.
Ah, I see. Thank you.
Also, even ideally it wouldn't have been started until next year. The plan was to run particles one direction, then go over the results and run them the other way, go over the results again, and then smash particles together.
Ehhh, I dunno if I'll stick around. We'll see.

I have the inside scoop (I went to a lecture by a guy from CERN about the LHC incident a few weeks back)
What happened was that one of the superconductors lost superconductivity, and a small voltage (like 1 V) appeared. But since they were running something like 20,000 A through that thing, the resistive heating was colossal, resulting in a small explosion-like event (it was probably more like rapid expansion of metal) offsetting a bunch of very heavy magnets, leaking helium and all that you said.

Hey look, Japan made a movie about me!
