Who came up with the word emo and what the hell does it mean to "be emo"?

I agree with Cross Marian when he/she (don't know the gender) says that anyone can be emo at times. Especially after those days where everything you had planned falls apart.

Emo is a short term from the word emotional.
To be Emo is to be overly emotional about irrational topics. Supposedly.

My sister, on the other hand, is a wanna be emo. She cut herself for a while and even pierced herself in her lips and nose. Now she doesn't do any of those things, but she still says she's emo. She also lets our dog lick her in the mouth (My sister is weird).

I'm not entirely sure who came up with the word emo .. I think it may have come from the word emotions, but that's just a guess.

So i'm emotional, but I don't believe i'm emo .. I don't live on depress-a-me street. Lol.

I just think that it is very important to know what's exactly the word "emo" means. Because seriously...some people say that they are not emos, but after reading whats about emos, they might change their minds. The meaning contains many types of things. Maybe the person doesn't wear those clothings, or cut themselves cos of depression, but there are the musics too. So it is better to know what it is before deciding to tell us that you are a emo or not.

But I'm pretty sure that I'm far from emo xD I dresses Asians, I listen to Asian pops, sometimes American R&B. I don't wear black makeups or nail polish. My bangs are above my eyebrows and natural. I love my life, I love the people around me. I'm a Christian, I'm happy that the lord is with me til eternity.

Yeah I got emotions.......but I dont get tied down by them like an emo, so nope Im not an emo hahahaha. Oh and the world needs emos' they make everyone one else feel less depress when they're down and if some of them do go emo they wont be alone LOL, so for all you emo haters shame on you. They play an important role in society just like everyone else.........now only if they'll figure that out they wouldnt be so depressed........but then if they did we wouldnt have any emos' LOL.

Nope, at least I wouldn't say so. Now with the article I'm even more confused since it is classifed as music, depression, being shy, etc. Even if you end up showing some of those characteristics how many would it really take to be considered emo?

No I'm not emo, thank the good lord. I don't agree with emos. I don't like them. If life is that hellish then end it. If you don't have the balls to do so then something must be going ok to keep you around or you're just a giant poultry product. Ha made myself laugh.

I had a cousin that decided he was emo until I slapped him so hard it knocked the dumb right out of him. He now runs his own music business.

The only thing I have to say to emos is grow up, get over it, and live with it. Life suxs everyone knows it. The challenge of living is making life good, being happy, and stop feeling sorry for yourself. People that don't do it are just lazy. I don't care what excuse someone comes up with. There is always a way out, sometimes you just have to improvise and make one.

I wouldn't classify myself as an emo. I like the music and I like the fashion (yes I dress emo and I like it) but attitude wise, no.
I believe that everyone is a little emo at one point in there lives though. Some people just let it consume them and they roll with it, and others just carry on.
