Emo has managed to generate a response on a scale not seen, at least to my knowledge, with any other subculture. On the other hand it has also spread globally at a seemingly incredible rate.

What are your feelings on the subculture and more importantly why?

I'm wondering what the younger set feels about the subculture. I'd guess just from the Cosmopolitannature of this forum people would be generally supportive, but I'm curious. Sounds like the subculture is pretty much in every high school from reading some articles. Is that true in your experience?

Just another ridiculous teenage trend with the same mentality behind it as all other trends.

It receives attention because it's fairly widespread amongst the angsty youth, and the followers of the trend are rather loud about their participation in it.

That was retarded. Emos is just a trend that's one of the most ridiculous things I've seen.

Example: Today I was walking to my 5th period, some kid who doesn't bathe (he admitted it.), cut his arms and was going around showing it to everyone.

I wanted to hit him, for he was some smelly kid who just wanted to be cool.

In general, I don't like the whole 'emo' thing. Yeah, I wish this fad would pass but by no means do I want entire mobs to try and beat them to death for being like that.
Hopefully something new and more tolerable will come along to replace it.

And as for banning the music, well I want to know how they're going to decide what's emo and what's not. Plus, not everyone who listens to Fall Out Boy is emo, so it'd cause a lot of problems.

ATTENTION GRUBBERS- the ones who show off ther self-mutilation as if its a trophy, and its not a funny matter, I had a firend who cut herself and it was horrible to watch her go through it. I Know one of these attention grubbers. My Emo friends cant stand her.

TRUE EMOS- The ones with the reak problems, they dont show off their scars. They don't think you'll care. They are trully depressed about something and probably wont bother you about it. I know, beleive me. I have my moments of depression and if I ever do cut myself to ease pain, Im not gonna show all of you the scars. No thankyou.

When you're emo, you contradict yourself.

"Hey, I'm going to follow a stupid trend 100,000 kids are already following, but I'll still be different! I'll hurt myself to get attention, and whine when my parent's yell at me, even if they are right!"

Being emo is just another stupid trend. Emos act like their starting a revolution, they're not. They're just being stupid. If you want to do some good in this world, go outside, don't cut yourself, and help other people, rather than whine when you don't get your way.

Oh dear, another emo thread.

Okay, the so-called "emos" that cut themselves then go tell/show people about it and complain about their lives are usually poser emos who just want attention and for someone to feel sorry for them.

The acceptable breed of emo is the kind I hang out with and who are some of the awesomest people I've ever met. These kind usually dont cut because they know its stupid and wont solve anything. These are usually the kids that ACTUALLY have a problem but act just as normal as everyone else, instead of pointing it out to everyone (i.e. "OMG, I went home and cried and cut myself! Everyone leave me alone cus I gots problemz that you'd never understand!!") like the afforementioned posers.

I personally like the emo subculture and my best friends (Really all of them) are mostly in the second group of emo. ...And I am just wating for someone to call me out on my opinion, or for a flame war to ensue >>;

Namiko, I believe you are the type of person who makes all of us who dress emo or listen to emo music look like a bunch of whiney teenagers so please, just let everyone have their opinion on this matter and dont yell at those who disagree with you. I disagree with some people here too, but I keep it to myself to prevent a flame war; just let them believe whatever they want, no matter if they're wrong or right.

Emo is not a relatively new trend. CURRENT emo kids are a new trend, and most of them are just stupid show-offs. Like Sean mentioned that smelly kid from his school. [XD] A few girls from my class used to be "emos" and they used to cut themselves in school, during class, on the same spot over and over again, and put huge leather bracelets on those open wounds to have a nice big fester the other day, so that they can cut on that for a bit. I saw this with my own eyes. That was two years ago, and they still have scars all over their hands, why? Because they wanted to be cool.

I think that REAL emos are not the type of person that will draw attention to themselves like that. They'll be the quiet ones that stand in the corner, stare at their Vans or whatever shoes and think about how sad they are because of this or that. Not walking around the hall with a raiser and showing their 66th cut or dramatically hitting the wall with their fists because "that stupid professor has no idea what I'm going through! No one does! Nobody understands my needs!" -.- You gotta admit that's pretty annoying to have around.

I don't hate emos, I just find them pointless. As for the emo music, it's okay, there are decent artists that are definitely worthy listening and as for clothing, I really like it. I just don't like all those stupid posers. Just get a life. My message to all real emos: get one as well. Move your lazy @ss instead of just sitting around and feeling sorry for yourself. Nothing will happen, nor good or bad if you're just letting it pass you by.

Emo isn't even a subculture, to be honest. It's just a ridiculous label that is vastly understood. It (the style), is not really any more 'outrageous' as punks were back in the day.

The problem with this thread is that Namiko is telling people to leave Emos alone for reasons that would apply to people actually hating on Emos. And the people who are dissing Emos in this thread are being entirely rational about their viewpoint without doing much hating at all.

It's a nonsensical reaction to nothing. It is going to stir up bs.

Alright, you guys. "Emo" is an insult to use against people that are "sad" or "dress darkly" or "have long hair".

Emo is also a type of music from the 80's. It's also used to describe the 'emotional hardcore' music of today, such as Fall Out Boy and what have you that many of these oddly dressed kids flock to. It's not surprising.

Emo is also a perceived way of dressing - mostly to do with long hair and dark clothes. Uh, reality check. That style was cultivated LONG ago by other ridiculously misunderstood fads such as punk and goth. The problem is people don't know what the hell to do with these words and start labeling everything emo. Naturally anyone that has a particular look is going to acquire a negative stigma.

It's a gigantic MESS. People are always inventing newer and newer reasons to label something as emo and it's maddening. It's not a group of people anymore, it's nothing, it's idiotic. It's a misunderstood topic that just confuses people and brings a lot of unnecessary drama - I can definitely see this thread getting closed soon.

If you cut yourself and listen to Fall Out Boy and wear the typical emo get-up - it's OBVIOUS you are trying to fit into a misunderstood and hated trend. If you're purposely calling yourself emo, I have nothing but contempt for you. Why would you want to be affiliated with such a despised icon?

Though I must add.. parents have done a horrible job at raising their children.

1. Smoking, boys wearing girl pants.. make up etc, girls dressing skanky

but then again.. it's not entirely their fault.. as I'm sure the generation X-ers didn't see this trend coming out of no where and all of their children now claim to be Bi and taking millions of pics and calling themselves ugly

Um. No. Right? I'm not exactly "with" the current emo trends though.

I didn't realize cutting had become that widespread or cool. That's actually kinda scary. I mean when I was in high school cutting would mean go directly to counseling, do not pass go, do not collect $200. I heard about cutting in relation to emo, but I thought that was just picking on them, I didn't think a lot of people actually did it.

As for the banning they can do it because they're freaking Russia. Though I think the banning only extends to schools and government buildings. It isn't as bad as it used to be over there.
