It can very much be a hoax and end up on TV. It's fairly frequent that journalists skip that whole fact checking part, and just grab their info from the interwebs or some newspaper. And if it's been on one TV channel, why should the other TV channels check if it happened? And thus, the hoax spreads across the media like wildfire.
