Picking up the check

It's probably just that I'm too old fashioned, but I think that a guy should always pay for a lady when they go out. Of course I always pay the bill for people, but moving on to the meat of the topic:

It is necessary for guys to always pay the bill, or should the woman sometimes chip in? Discuss!

If the guy invited the girl to dinner, then he should pay. If the girl invited the guy, she should pay.
If it was a mutual idea then the best idea is to split it, or one pays and one leaves the tip. Unless one of them offers to do it all.

I think things have changed, women are more independent so its not a bad thing if they pay a bill. Being a gentleman is good but that doesnt mean paying the bill all the time, its nice when a woman actually "invites" you something. Paying 50/50 is good too i dont see anything wrong with that either.

I offer to pay first, not because of some antiquated notion of chivalry, but simply because I feel its the kind thing to do.

I am not opposed to a woman paying for a man either. Hell, just on friday my Sgt. paid for my lunch. I told her I would pay for it myself but she refused, so I shrugged and thanked her.

To say a guy should always pay is an obsolete way of thinking. Then again, the women that advocate such terms of equality almost always want to keep what suits them.

50/50 is always nice or whoever asked who out should pay. People are getting more independent so... either 50/50 or one pays the bill and one pays tip.

I think it really depends on the person you're dealing with and the sort of relationship dynamic you're looking for.

For example my brother wanted a submissive female (there are still some out there believe it or not). If you want to have that kind of relationship you darn well better pay or you're just a jerk.

With my wife we'd sometimes alternate paying for things (instead of the awkwardness of splitting checks I suggest one pays for the skating rink and the other pays for dinner and so on). Though I'd usually be paying more.

Anyway I guess what I'm saying is that I think the whole paying the bill thing is a way to feel out what sort of relationship dynamic you're going to have.

So ladies careful about just letting the guy pay for everything or you may be sending the wrong signals.

If it's a date then yeah I'm gonna pay. If it's just one of my friends then she can pay for herself unless she is short on cash and will pay me back later.

If you're dating, sure. That's one of the signs of how you can tell you're on a date - if the guy pays (they aren't always obvious). If you start to get serious, no, it isn't necessary. You start to love one another and view each other as equals. Me and my boyfriend go split on everything, save for birthdays of course. This is someone I'm probably going to share a bank account with someday.

Oh and my above comments apply when the relationship is more advanced. For a first date or so don't worry about it and just pay if you asked her out.

I don't think men should always pay for the bill. If the man asks the woman to dinner then it's polite for him to pay the bill, but if the woman asks the man to dinner then she should pay the bill. When I am asked to go to dinner with someone and they say they'll pay the bill I usually always ask if they're sure and that it's no problem if I pay for my share. It's just polite.

And for couples who have been together for some time it shouldn't matter. I'm talking about first dates sort of thing.

I think it totally depends on the guy & girl. If it's the first few dates, I think they should split the bill. I think that it's nice for the guy to offer to pay the whole bill, but personally, I would rather split it 50/50.

It's been a long time since I've been on a date with anybody other than my wife, but when I used to date I always asked the person if they mind that I pay for the whole thing. Since that was how I was raised I always felt more comfortable that way, but if the girl would of said no. Then we could of split the bill if she wanted to. The thing is that never happened.

I usually will pay for meals unless otherwise unable to or not allowed to. It's just polite to do if you invite someone out to a meal. Course, I've gotten in trouble for this before (dinner with someone who has that same view point).

On occasion, I'll have a friend who tells me that she is paying for dinner and that I don't have any say in the matter. I know well enough to just silently nod my head and accept it.

It all depends, if your on a date, and your the one that asked the girl out, of course, its only polite to be the one to pay, and that also goes for vice versa. If your just friends, then the check should be cut into 50 50.

The richer one should pay. [Meaning if I was plum broke under a few circumstances I would like it if they helped out.. Just as I would help out if my friend was broke..]
